There is no single best ratio for every coffee or brew method: use the same recipe for each test, taste the results, and adjust the Robusta share to suit your preference.
Choose a starting ratio and measure by weight
For repeatable results, measure roasted Arabica and Robusta by weight rather than volume. A practical first trial is a 20 g total dose:

| Arabica/Robusta ratio | Arabica for a 20 g test | Robusta for a 20 g test |
|---|---|---|
| 90/10 | 18 g | 2 g |
| 80/20 | 16 g | 4 g |
| 70/30 | 14 g | 6 g |
These are useful comparison points, not scientifically established optimum recipes. In a 2022 study on blend authentication and spectral analysis, researchers prepared mixtures with 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 5%, 10%, 20%, and 35% Robusta by weight; the study did not establish consumer-preferred ratios. The authors also report, citing earlier literature, that Robusta addition above 35% may have a palpable effect on aroma. That is not a guaranteed flavor threshold for every coffee. - Select the beans. Use two fresh, clearly labeled roasted coffees. Similar roast levels make the first comparison easier to interpret, though that does not mean matching roasts will always taste best.
- Make small batches. Weigh the same total dose for each ratio. A kitchen scale or coffee scale helps, but the essential point is keeping the proportions consistent.
- Keep the brew constant. Use the same equipment, water, grind setting, and brewing recipe for every sample. Change the bean ratio alone so you can tell what difference it makes.
- Taste and note. Compare aroma, bitterness, body, sweetness, and—if you drink coffee with milk—whether the coffee remains noticeable in the finished drink.
- Adjust gradually. If the Robusta character is too dominant for you, lower its share. If you want to explore a fuller or more intense espresso, try a modest increase and taste again.
- Scale up only after choosing. Once you settle on a ratio, blend a modest quantity and store the whole beans in an airtight container away from heat, light, and moisture.
Origin matters alongside species. In the study’s blend series, the Arabica and Robusta came from Ethiopia and India, respectively; its pure-coffee samples also included Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, and Uganda. The species names alone therefore cannot predict the result from every pair of beans.

Espresso and moka pot
A modest Robusta share is a reasonable place to experiment if you want to explore more body or persistent crema. Lavazza’s US consumer guide suggests 10–30% Robusta for espresso and describes body and crema as benefits of the blend. That is company guidance, not an independent finding or a guarantee for a particular coffee. Treat the range as a set of possible trials rather than a rule. See Lavazza’s guide.
Milk drinks
Judge the blend in the drink you actually make. A coffee that tastes balanced straight may be less noticeable after milk is added, so include your usual amount of milk when comparing samples.

Filter, French press, and cold brew
Do not assume an espresso ratio will work the same way in other brewing methods. Lavazza recommends Arabica-focused choices for filter and cold brew and cautions that darker Robusta may taste bitter or astringent in cold brew. These are vendor recommendations to test against your own beans and recipe, not universal rules.

Why the same ratio can taste different
Species is only one influence on the cup. The Specialty Coffee Association’s discussion of a meta-analysis notes that organic-acid profiles differ by species and roast, and that roasting changes acids; the relationship between roast level and particular acids is not uniform across acids and species. So avoid assuming that all Robusta will be more bitter, or all Arabica more acidic. The actual beans and their roast matter. Read the SCA discussion.
