It supports viewport, element, and full-page captures. Browserless remains a broader managed-browser option, while ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server to try first when the job is to get a clean image or PDF without setting up browser automation.
The right choice depends on where the browser runs, whether you need follow-up interactions, and whether your agent should inspect a visual image or structured page information. The documentation cited here does not establish comparable prices or independent performance results, so there is no evidence-based universal winner.

Which Browserless alternative fits your screenshot workflow?
| Option | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Screenshot or PDF capture through an API or MCP tool | It is purpose-built for screenshots and PDFs, with consent-banner, popup, and chat-widget cleanup before capture. Only clean shots are billed. |
| Playwright MCP | Agent-led browser navigation and interaction with screenshots as part of the workflow | It exposes page structure through accessibility snapshots for interaction, and supports viewport, element, and full-page screenshots. |
| Browserless automation MCP | Managed browser automation including screenshots and other browser tasks | Its documented scope includes scraping, screenshots, PDFs, downloads, custom Puppeteer code, crawling, and Lighthouse audits. Browser execution occurs in Browserless cloud or a self-hosted Browserless instance. |
Browserless also has a separate, read-only Docs MCP for asking questions about its documentation. It is not a browser-control or screenshot alternative.
Why Playwright MCP is the clearest browser-automation alternative
Playwright MCP is an MCP server built around Playwright browser automation. It lets an agent navigate and interact with a page as well as take screenshots, so it is a close fit when a screenshot is one step in a larger browser task rather than the whole job. The setup guide lists Node.js 20 or newer and installation with npx @playwright/mcp@latest. Its documentation describes standard configuration for several MCP clients; check the current guide for client-specific setup.
#1 Best Overall
Snapshots for interaction, screenshots for visual inspection
Playwright MCP’s normal interaction model presents structured accessibility snapshots: elements, roles, and text that an agent can use to identify targets. A screenshot is useful for seeing visual layout, canvas or chart content, or documenting a visual bug. The Playwright screenshot guidance puts the distinction plainly: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact.”
This makes Playwright especially useful when the agent needs to inspect a page, click controls, fill forms, and then verify how the result looks. It does not establish that Playwright is faster, cheaper, more private, or more accurate than Browserless for a given workload.
Screenshot scope and formats
Playwright documents screenshots of the viewport, a selected element identified by selector or element reference, and the full scrollable page. Supported output formats are PNG, JPEG, and WebP. Capture can use CSS-pixel or device-pixel scaling. Choose viewport capture for the currently visible screen, element capture for a specific component, and full-page capture when the complete scrollable document is needed.
Browserless: managed automation, with an important hosting distinction
Browserless documents an automation MCP that can take screenshots and PDFs, scrape pages, download files, run custom Puppeteer code, crawl sites, and run Lighthouse audits. Its screenshot guidance shows a full-page screenshot through the browserless_smartscraper MCP tool, and it separately documents a REST /screenshot endpoint returning PNG or JPEG. The REST example uses an API token.
Browserless describes smart scraping as automatically selecting a strategy and handling bot protection. That is a vendor-described capability, not independent evidence that it outperforms Playwright MCP or another option on difficult sites.
Rank #2
Does a local Browserless MCP process mean local browser execution?
No. Browserless says that running its MCP server process locally still sends browser work to Browserless cloud or to a self-hosted Browserless instance. The location of the MCP process and the location of the browser are different deployment boundaries. If local browser execution is a requirement, verify where the browser actually runs in the specific configuration rather than inferring it from the MCP process being local.
Do not confuse the Docs MCP with browser automation
Browserless’s Docs MCP is read-only documentation lookup and does not provide browser control or screenshots. The automation MCP is the relevant Browserless product for capturing pages; its documentation says an API token is required.
Taking a screenshot with Playwright MCP
Set up the Playwright MCP server in the MCP client you use, following that client’s current configuration instructions. The official documentation’s basic package command is:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest
Node.js 20 or newer is listed as a prerequisite in the setup guide. Once the server is configured and connected, ask the agent to open the target page and choose the capture scope. The tool names and client setup fields can change, so use the current Playwright guide rather than copying a client configuration intended for another application.
- Open the page. Have the agent navigate to the URL you want to inspect.
- Interact using page structure. Ask it to take an accessibility snapshot and use the exposed references to locate or operate controls.
- Capture the appropriate view. Request a viewport, selected-element, or full-page screenshot. Specify PNG, JPEG, or WebP as needed.
- Review the image. Use the screenshot to check appearance or preserve a visual record; return to the snapshot for further element interaction.
For Browserless specifically, use its automation MCP’s documented smart-scraper screenshot flow for a full-page screenshot, or its REST /screenshot endpoint when you need an HTTP response with PNG or JPEG. The Browserless example requires an API token; follow its current endpoint documentation for request fields and authentication rather than assuming Playwright’s configuration applies.

Choose by hosting boundary, task, and page difficulty
Choose Playwright MCP for agent-driven interaction
Pick it when the task includes navigation, selecting controls, filling forms, or other browser work, and you want the agent to use structured page information before checking the visual result. It is the most clearly documented Browserless alternative in the sources reviewed for that combined workflow.
Choose Browserless when you want its managed-browser workflow
Pick Browserless when its broader set of managed browser tasks—such as scraping, PDF generation, downloads, or custom Puppeteer execution—matches the job. Decide whether you will use Browserless cloud or a self-hosted instance, and account for the fact that a locally running MCP server alone does not keep browser execution local.
Choose a screenshot API or screenshot-focused MCP for capture-only work
If the agent does not need to operate a browser and you mainly need an image or PDF, a screenshot API can avoid building a browser-control workflow around the capture. ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first for that case: it offers a one-request screenshot API and MCP tools, removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. Its MCP server includes screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the target URL and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

The available product documentation does not provide comparable current pricing, usage limits, or billing terms for Browserless and Playwright MCP. It also does not provide independent head-to-head measurements of speed, reliability, screenshot accuracy, or bot-protection success. Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
- The MCP client cannot start Playwright MCP. Confirm that Node.js 20 or newer is available and that the package command is installed or launched as shown in the current setup guide. Check the client’s MCP configuration syntax and restart or reconnect the server after changing it.
- The agent cannot identify a control from the screenshot. Use an accessibility snapshot and its element references for interaction. Screenshots show pixels; they are not the documented primary mechanism for targeting page elements.
- The screenshot omits content lower on the page. Use full-page capture rather than viewport capture. If only one component is needed, capture that element instead.
- You expected a local Browserless browser. A locally run MCP process does not establish local browser execution. Configure a self-hosted Browserless instance if that is the intended boundary, and verify the browser endpoint being used.
- Browserless authentication fails. Its automation MCP and REST screenshot example require an API token. Check that the token is present in the configured request or connection and that you are using the automation service rather than the token-free, read-only Docs MCP.
- A difficult page still blocks capture. Browserless documents bot-protection handling in its smart-scraping workflow, but the documentation does not guarantee success on every site. Validate behavior against the target site and do not treat a vendor capability statement as a comparative result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright MCP take a full-page screenshot?
Yes. Its screenshot documentation includes full-page capture, in addition to viewport and selected-element screenshots.
Does Browserless’s Docs MCP take screenshots?
No. It is a read-only tool for looking up Browserless documentation; screenshots belong to the Browserless automation MCP or screenshot endpoint.
