First, identify which Wowza product you are comparing
“Wowza” can mean two different products. Wowza Video is the hosted service whose documentation covers 24×7 channels and a YouTube RTMP target. Wowza Streaming Engine is separate software with private-cloud and on-premises deployment options and its own instance/channel pricing. A Wowza Video 24×7 quote and a Wowza Streaming Engine plan are not comparable subscriptions.

How each option reaches YouTube
Wowza Video: a documented RTMP target path
Wowza’s tutorial describes creating a live stream in YouTube Studio, retrieving its stream URL and key, then configuring a custom target that sends the Wowza stream or transcoder rendition to YouTube over RTMP. The tutorial says the described workflow requires a subscription that supports passthrough, and says YouTube—not Wowza Video—does the transcoding in that configuration. Confirm that the account plan supports the needed mode before building around it.

MediaLive: verified encoder, not an automatic YouTube setup
YouTube includes AWS Elemental MediaLive on its verified encoder list. That is evidence that MediaLive is a recognized encoder option, not proof that a particular AWS channel automatically creates a YouTube event, manages your stream key, or stays live indefinitely. Configure the MediaLive channel, input and output for the intended workflow, then follow current AWS and YouTube instructions for handing the encoder feed to the YouTube event. The exact configuration depends on the input, output and channel requirements; do not treat “verified encoder” as a one-click setup guarantee.
MediaLive’s documented input limits are up to two push inputs and up to 20 pull inputs per channel, with additional feature rules. If you need redundancy or a particular input protocol, validate that the chosen channel configuration supports it rather than assuming every input combination is allowed.

What 24/7 means for architecture and cost
AWS: price the whole workflow, not only the encoder
AWS describes MediaLive billing in terms of inputs and configured outputs. There is no separate charge simply for a channel running, but an output configured in a running channel can be charged even when it is paused. AWS identifies on-demand, reserved and discounted pricing options; the applicable amount depends on configuration and region.
An AWS workflow may also use services such as MediaPackage for packaging or CloudFront for delivery. For a YouTube-only destination, do not add a CloudFront audience-delivery estimate as if AWS were serving viewers directly: the encoder feed goes to YouTube, and YouTube handles viewer delivery. If you also serve owned web players or other endpoints, model their packaging, origination and CDN needs separately.
Published figures are examples, not quotes
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide gives an example for a one-hour SD 540p event in US East (N. Virginia), with about 1,000 viewers and 791 GB of CloudFront delivery: approximately $2.50 for live encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for CloudFront, or about $69.74 total. Its listed components are MediaLive at $1.99/hour, MediaPackage ingest at $0.11/hour, packaging/origination at $0.40/hour, and CloudFront at $67.24/hour. The guide notes its assumptions and excludes test-player storage. These figures describe that specific AWS solution, not a YouTube-only channel or a 24/7 workload. Do not multiply the one-hour example by 24 to estimate a daily or monthly bill.

The example illustrates how delivery to an owned audience can dominate an AWS workflow’s cost. It cannot be scaled into a personal forecast without matching bitrate, concurrent audience, cache behavior, geography and delivery path.
Wowza prices apply to different products and terms
Wowza’s Video/Flowplayer enterprise offer describes 24×7 streaming at scale but directs prospective buyers to contact Wowza; a direct 24×7 price is not stated. Wowza Streaming Engine’s Basic Monthly plan is listed at $195 per month for one instance, including up to 10 concurrent transcoded channels; that is not the price of Wowza Video 24×7.

Check current regional pricing and account eligibility with each provider. A YouTube-only feed and an AWS workflow that also delivers to a separate web audience are different cost models.

- “Wowza” quote does not specify the product: establish whether it is Wowza Video or Wowza Streaming Engine before comparing plan terms or prices.
- Wowza 24×7 mode is unavailable: the account may need the feature enabled; trial accounts are not eligible. Confirm access before creating the channel.
- Requirements conflict with Wowza’s 24×7 mode: if you need recording or 4K, its setup documentation rules those out for that mode. Recheck the workflow against those requirements before setup.
- MediaLive is assumed to be turnkey: the verified-encoder listing does not configure the AWS channel, YouTube event or stream-key handoff. Verify each part of the actual workflow.
- AWS estimate is unexpectedly high: separate encoder and packaging charges from viewer-delivery charges. Confirm whether an estimate includes CloudFront and whether viewers are being served by AWS or YouTube.
- A paused output still appears in the bill: AWS says configured outputs in a running channel can be chargeable even while paused. Review channel and output configuration against the current billing details.
- A one-hour estimate is treated as a 24/7 quote: the published AWS worked example has specific resolution, audience, region and delivery assumptions. Build an estimate from the intended workload instead.
YouTube policy and content checks
Encoder compatibility does not grant rights to stream the material or guarantee that a channel will meet YouTube’s rules. Before scheduling a continuous stream, verify that you have the necessary rights for every recording, including music and other embedded material, and check YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies for reused content. Keep any required permissions and source records.
