With Playwright MCP, navigate to the page, inspect its accessibility snapshot, click the visible consent option that matches your intent, take a fresh snapshot, then capture the page with browser_take_screenshot. Use a snapshot to find and operate the banner’s button; use a screenshot to record the page visually. The steps below use Playwright MCP—other MCP browser servers may have different tools and setup.
Set up Playwright MCP
Playwright’s getting-started guide lists Node.js 20 or newer and a compatible MCP client as prerequisites. Follow its current configuration instructions to add @playwright/mcp@latest as an MCP server: Playwright MCP. That guide documents browser choices including Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge, as well as persistent, isolated, and browser-extension profile modes.
Profile mode affects the browser state you work with. Persistent mode is the default and preserves login state and cookies; isolated mode starts fresh and can load storage state. A cookie banner may therefore appear differently depending on the browser profile and the site’s state.
Dismiss the banner and capture the page
- Navigate to the target URL. Ask your MCP client to use the browser navigation tool to open the page.
- Inspect an accessibility snapshot. Ask for a snapshot and locate the banner’s accessible text and buttons. Playwright MCP represents accessible elements with roles, text, and refs. Do not assume a particular site uses labels such as “Reject” or “Accept”; read the controls currently shown.
- Choose the consent option that matches the instruction. Click the snapshot ref for that visible button—for example, a reject or necessary-only option if available and requested. If the instruction is to accept, choose the available accept control. The tool documentation does not prescribe a universal consent choice or selector.
- Take a fresh snapshot after the click. Page changes invalidate snapshot refs. If a ref is stale, or after navigation or a consent click, inspect the updated page and use the current ref. On a large snapshot,
browser_findcan search matching text and return its surrounding subtree. - Capture the desired view. Call
browser_take_screenshot. By default it captures the viewport. UsefullPage: truefor the full scrollable page, or provide a target ref or selector to capture one element. Full-page capture and an element target cannot be combined.
Supported screenshot formats are PNG, JPEG, and WebP. If you do not specify a filename, the image is returned inline and saved with a generated name. See Playwright’s Screenshots and Snapshots documentation.

Choose the capture type for the job
| Capture | Use it for | Important detail |

| Viewport | A quick record of the visible state after dismissing the banner. | This is the default screenshot behavior. |
| Element | A single component, such as a chart or content panel. | Target the element with a ref or selector. Do not combine it with fullPage: true. |
| Full page | Content below the fold across the scrollable page. | Set fullPage: true; do not also set an element target. |
Accessibility snapshots and screenshots serve different purposes. Snapshots help locate and operate accessible controls; screenshots help verify visual appearance, document a bug, and inspect visual content such as charts or canvas elements. See Snapshots and Screenshots.
When the banner or interaction behaves differently
The banner is not in the snapshot
Check that navigation has completed and inspect a fresh snapshot. If the page changed, earlier refs may no longer be valid. The reviewed Playwright documentation does not establish one universal fallback selector for consent controls that are absent from the accessibility tree.

A ref is stale or the click does not match the current page
Take a new snapshot and use the ref shown there. Refs belong to the snapshot state and should not be reused after the page changes.
A browser dialog appears
A browser dialog is different from an in-page cookie banner. If the MCP tool reports an actual browser dialog, handle that modal before proceeding; dialog handling is among the interactions described in the getting-started guide.
You are considering deleting cookies to remove the banner
Cookie and local/session storage management are separate tools exposed through Playwright MCP’s storage capability. Deleting or editing stored cookies is not the same as responding to the site’s in-page consent interface. See Capabilities.

You are considering browser evaluation as a workaround
The ordinary snapshot-and-click workflow does not require code execution or browser evaluation. Playwright warns that browser_run_code_unsafe executes arbitrary JavaScript and is equivalent to remote-code execution; enable it only for trusted MCP clients. See Playwright MCP.

Can Playwright MCP choose the cookie option automatically?
It can click a visible control identified in the page snapshot, but the option should match the consent instruction. The documentation does not define a universal choice or selector.

What should I do if the banner’s buttons are missing from the accessibility snapshot?
The reviewed documentation does not specify a universal fallback for controls absent from the accessibility tree. Avoid assuming a selector or consent choice.
