Browser Location Permission: Allow a Website to Use Your Location

Allow location for a specific website in its browser permissions, then check your device’s location settings if the site still cannot determine your location.

To let a website use your location, open that site’s permissions in your browser and set Location to Allow. If it still cannot find you, check that your device also allows location access for the browser. The steps depend on your browser and device; use the matching instructions below.

Choose the right scope before changing a setting

You can usually allow location for one website or change the browser’s default for websites generally. Choose a site-specific permission if only one site needs it; use the default setting if you want the same policy to apply broadly. A browser permission and your device’s location setting are separate: both may need to permit access before a site can get precise device-derived location.

Allow precise location only when the site’s feature needs it and you trust how the site handles location data. Browser controls govern the browser’s sharing of device-derived location; they do not prevent every approximate location estimate. For example, a website may infer a general area from your IP address even when precise device location is off.

If you grant access in a prompt, select Remember this decision to retain it. Without that choice, the grant is temporary and expires after one hour or when the tab closes. In the Location Permissions dialog, you can also block new location requests.

Enable location in Safari on Mac

For the open website, use Safari’s Page menu in the Smart Search field, choose Website Settings, and set Location. To review broader defaults, choose Safari > Settings > Websites > Location. Select a site in the list or choose how Safari handles other websites. Safari’s choices are Ask, Deny, and Allow.

The available guidance here does not establish a complete current Safari-on-iPhone or iPad route. Do not apply the Mac menu path to those devices; use the device’s current Settings and the Safari site prompt.

If the website still cannot get your location

  1. Check the exact site and browser profile. A permission for one site does not necessarily change another site’s setting. Reopen the site’s permission controls and verify the decision.
  2. Check device-level access. Browser permissions and operating-system location access are separate, particularly on Windows and macOS. If the browser indicates that system location is off, enable it in device settings.
  3. Replace a previous denial. Reopen the site’s permission controls and change the saved decision from Block or Deny. Firefox’s Location settings list sites whose permissions can be reviewed; Chrome and Edge also provide site-specific controls.
  4. Check whether settings are managed. If this is a work or school computer and a control is unavailable or locked, ask the organization’s administrator whether browser settings are managed.

What allowing location does—and does not do

Allowing location lets the browser share device-derived location with a website that requests it, subject to the device’s own access settings. It is a privacy decision: grant it only to a site you trust and when the feature needs it. Blocking precise location does not necessarily stop a site from estimating a broad area using other information, such as an IP address.
