What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Adware is defined by unwanted advertising; a browser hijacker is defined by unauthorized changes to browser settings or behavior. The same program can do both—for example, by changing your search provider and then injecting ads. Look at what the software is doing before relying on a security vendor’s label.
What is the difference between adware and a browser hijacker?
| Clue | Adware | Browser hijacker |
|---|---|---|
| Defining behavior | Centers on showing unwanted advertising. Malwarebytes’ adware overview | Changes browser settings without the user’s knowledge or consent. Malwarebytes’ browser hijacker overview |
| Possible signs | Unexpected ads or pop-ups; some cases may also involve altered start or search pages and redirects. | An unexpected homepage or search provider, redirected searches, or ads injected into pages. |
| Can the descriptions overlap? | Yes. Advertising software can use browser-setting changes to deliver ads. | Yes. A hijacker may both change settings and inject advertising. |
| Does one symptom prove the cause? | No. Ads alone do not identify a particular program or prove an infection. | No. Check settings, extensions, and recent installations, then use trusted security tools if needed. |
These are behavior-based descriptions, not a universal naming system. Microsoft also uses the broader term potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) for a grey-area category that can include software that displays unexpected ads or offers other software. Microsoft says PUAs are not themselves malware, though unwanted software can still be disruptive or risky. Microsoft’s PUA guidance and unwanted-software guidance explain that terminology.

How to tell whether your browser may be hijacked
Focus on a combination of clues rather than a single pop-up or unexpected ad. A changed search engine, homepage, or new-tab page—especially alongside redirects—points to browser settings or behavior being altered. Ads that appear unexpectedly may point toward adware, but ordinary websites also display ads, so their presence alone proves little.
To compare two detections or investigate a problem, note four things:

- SPEED-OPTIMIZED, CROSS-PLATFORM PROTECTION: World-class antivirus security and cyber protection for Windows (Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11), Mac OS (Yosemite 10.10 or later), iOS (11.2 or later), and Android (5.0 or later). Organize and keep your digital life safe from hackers
- SAFE ONLINE BANKING: A unique, dedicated browser secures your online transactions; Our Total Security product also includes 200MB per day of our new and improved Bitdefender VPN
- ADVANCED THREAT DEFENSE: Real-Time Data Protection, Multi-Layer Malware and Ransomware Protection, Social Network Protection, Game/Movie/Work Modes, Microphone Monitor, Webcam Protection, Anti-Tracker, Phishing, Fraud, and Spam Protection, File Shredder, Parental Controls, and more
- ECO-FRIENDLY PACKAGING: Your product-specific code is printed on a card and shipped inside a protective cardboard sleeve. Simply open packaging and scratch off security ink on the card to reveal your activation code. No more bulky box or hard-to-recycle discs. PLEASE NOTE: Product packaging may vary from the images shown, however the product is the same.
- Behavior: Are you mainly seeing unexpected ads, or are searches and browser settings changing too?
- Scope: Does the issue affect one browser or more than one?
- Persistence: Do settings stay restored, or do they change back?
- Detection label: What does the security vendor call the item? Treat that as the vendor’s classification, not a universal taxonomy.
Symptoms can help narrow down what to inspect, but they do not identify which program is responsible. A security tool’s scan and the installed apps and extensions are more useful for that than the symptom label alone.
What to do about unexpected ads, search changes, or redirects
Start with ordinary, reversible checks. Avoid manual registry or HOSTS-file edits: incorrect system changes can cause additional problems. If the behavior persists or settings keep reverting, seek help from trusted security support rather than assuming a browser reset will fix the cause.

- Check browser settings. Review the homepage, new-tab page, and default search provider, and restore the choices you intended. Malwarebytes describes these kinds of changes as common browser-hijacker behavior: Browser Hijackers.
- Review extensions and recent installs. Remove extensions you do not recognize or need. Consider whether the symptoms began after installing an extension or app; unwanted software can arrive bundled with another program. Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance also recommends removing unused browser extensions.
- Uninstall unwanted apps normally. Use your operating system’s standard application settings to remove software you do not need; do not delete unfamiliar system files by hand.
- Update and scan. Update your operating system, browser, and apps, then run a current security scan. On Windows, Microsoft describes scanning and security controls in App & browser control in the Windows Security app.
- Complete any detection action. If Windows Security reports a PUA, check its available actions and apply the one you intend. Microsoft notes that a detected PUA may be blocked yet remain on the device until an action is selected. Microsoft’s PUA guidance.
Why the security label may differ
Security vendors do not always use “adware,” “browser hijacker,” and “potentially unwanted application” as interchangeable categories. Microsoft’s PUA guidance covers a broader grey-area classification, while Malwarebytes describes adware and browser hijackers by their behavior. When a scan gives an unfamiliar label, consider it alongside what changed on the device and the vendor’s explanation of the detection—not as a diagnosis based on terminology alone.
