The best Browser Use alternative depends on where you need control. Use Playwright for stable, testable workflows and the lowest software bill. Use Stagehand when your code should stay deterministic but a few steps need natural-language actions or extraction. Choose Skyvern for reusable, multi-step workflows with validation, integrations, and a no-code editor. Choose Steel when you want to own the browser fleet and data path, or Steel Cloud when managed sessions, stealth, proxies, CAPTCHA handling, and persistence are worth the service cost. Choose Browserbase when you want hosted browser sessions and production tooling without operating that infrastructure.
None of these options makes automation free. Local and open-source tools remove or reduce platform subscriptions, but you still pay for model calls, browser compute, proxies, maintenance, observability, and engineering time. Compare that total cost—not just a browser-hour price—before moving a workflow.

Quick comparison
| Option | Best fit | Control and hosting | AI capability | Commercial notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Stable scripts, regression tests, and CI | Run browsers and infrastructure yourself | None built in; add your own model layer | Open-source library; engineering and model costs remain |
| Stagehand | Code-first flows with a few intent-based steps | Run locally with any Chromium browser, or place it on managed infrastructure | act(), extract(), and observe() beside the Playwright page API |
MIT-licensed open source; model usage is extra |
| Skyvern | Reusable business workflows and no-code editing | Self-host under AGPL-3.0 or use Skyvern Cloud | Natural-language action, structured extraction, and validation | Cloud operations trade some control for convenience |
| Steel | A browser layer for an agent your team builds | Self-host the open-source server or use Steel Cloud | No complete agent by itself | Steel advertises $30 in free credits for Launch and a $250/month Scale plan plus usage in its 2026 FAQ |
| Browserbase | Managed browser infrastructure and production operations | Hosted sessions; no browser fleet to operate | Model tooling and Stagehand integration | Pricing page lists Free, $20, $99, and custom monthly tiers (accessed 2026) |
The table separates an automation framework from browser infrastructure. Playwright, Stagehand, and Skyvern help express actions; Steel and Browserbase primarily provide the browsers, sessions, and operational layer in which your agent runs.

- Agent logic: decides the next action from a goal, page state, and previous results.
- Browser control: clicks, types, navigates, uploads files, and waits for page changes.
- Data operations: extracts structured fields and validates that the outcome is correct.
- Runtime infrastructure: supplies browsers, queues, credentials, networking, recordings, retries, and observability.
A team that already operates containers and a browser fleet may save money with local Playwright or Stagehand. A small team with no operations capacity may spend less overall on a managed runtime even when its subscription is higher. Decide which layer you are replacing before comparing feature lists.
Playwright: the lowest-level, most deterministic choice
Playwright is Microsoft’s browser automation library. Its documentation states that it runs Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox, as well as branded browsers such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. The command-line installer downloads the browser binaries, and device emulation is available for testing mobile layouts and behavior.
Why teams choose it
Selectors, assertions, explicit waits, fixtures, traces, and parallel workers make a Playwright flow predictable when the application’s structure is known. That predictability is valuable in CI: a failed assertion points to a reproducible state instead of an opaque model decision. You can keep credentials, browser traffic, and test artifacts inside your own network.

What it does not provide
Playwright does not decide that “find the cheapest available flight and fill the traveler details” means a particular sequence of actions. You must write selectors and control flow, and you must add a model or another decision layer if the interface is too variable for selectors alone. Every model call, proxy, queue, and browser host is your responsibility.
Use it when
- The pages and selectors are stable enough to express in code.
- The workflow must pass repeatable tests or run in a controlled CI environment.
- You need the strongest data-residency and network-control posture.
- Your team can maintain selectors when the application changes.
For a known workflow, Playwright is usually the cheapest software option because there is no agent platform subscription. It is not automatically the cheapest project: engineering time, browser capacity, retries, monitoring, and any model service still count.
Stagehand: keep the Playwright foundation and add AI selectively
Stagehand is Browserbase’s MIT-licensed open-source SDK. Its official description combines the Playwright-style page API with three AI primitives: act() for carrying out an intent, extract() for returning structured data, and observe() for identifying possible actions. It works with any Chromium browser locally, so you can begin without a hosted browser account.
A practical hybrid pattern
- Use ordinary Playwright navigation, authentication, assertions, and stable selectors for the predictable parts.
- Call
observe()when a page has several possible controls or its labels change. - Pass the chosen intent to
act()for the one interaction that is difficult to encode reliably. - Use
extract()with a defined schema, then validate the returned values in your own code. - Fall back to a deterministic selector or stop for human review when the model confidence or validation is unacceptable.
This design limits model calls to the unstable edges of a workflow. It also gives you a conventional page API for screenshots, network interception, downloads, and assertions, rather than forcing every step through a general-purpose agent.

Trade-offs
Stagehand still requires code, browser lifecycle management, and a model provider. Prompt wording, page changes, and model latency can affect an AI-assisted step, so record the action, input page state, model response, and final assertion. Because the SDK is MIT-licensed, you can run and modify it locally, but that license does not remove the cost of operating browsers or paying for inference.
Stagehand is the strongest fit when 80–95 percent of the flow is known and only a few screens require semantic understanding. If the entire requirement is a business workflow that non-developers should edit, Skyvern is a more natural evaluation.
Skyvern: workflow-oriented automation with extraction and validation
Skyvern extends Playwright with natural-language actions, structured extraction, and validation commands. Its developer documentation describes Python and TypeScript SDKs, MCP support, a no-code workflow builder, and integrations aimed at multi-step processes. You can self-host under the AGPL-3.0 license or use Skyvern Cloud for managed infrastructure.
Where it differs from a code-first SDK
A Skyvern workflow can represent a business outcome—such as collecting fields from several supplier portals, checking that a value matches a rule, and handing the result to another system—rather than only a sequence of selectors. Extraction schemas make the expected output explicit; validation steps can stop a run when a page reports an error or a returned value violates a business rule.
Self-hosting considerations
Self-hosting gives you control over network egress, credentials, logs, and where browser sessions run. It also makes your team responsible for upgrades, worker capacity, model-provider configuration, secret rotation, and incident response. Review AGPL-3.0 obligations with your legal team before embedding or modifying the software in a service you distribute.
Community signals and their limits
Skyvern’s 2026 developer page reported more than 23,200 GitHub stars, 5,000 Discord members, and 100 contributors. Those counts change continuously and indicate interest rather than a guarantee of support quality, reliability, or suitability for your workflow.
Use it when
- A workflow spans many pages or services and needs reusable extraction and validation.
- Operations or domain specialists need to edit flows without changing application code.
- MCP or other integrations are part of the product requirement.
- You can accept either AGPL governance and operational work or a managed cloud deployment.
Steel: own the browser infrastructure or buy its managed features
Steel is browser infrastructure, not a complete browser agent. Its open-source server can be hosted by your team. Steel Cloud adds managed sessions, stealth capabilities, proxies, CAPTCHA solving, and session persistence. You supply the agent logic—Playwright, Stagehand, or another driver—and Steel supplies the browser layer.

Self-hosted Steel
Self-hosting is appropriate when browser traffic must stay in a controlled network, when you need custom routing, or when your team already operates containerized services. Plan for browser image updates, concurrency limits, storage for session data, health checks, queueing, and secure handling of cookies. “Open source” does not mean maintenance-free: an unavailable worker or exhausted host becomes your incident.
Steel Cloud
Managed sessions can remove much of that operational burden. Stealth, proxy, CAPTCHA, and persistence features may be decisive for sites that challenge automation, but they also add vendor dependency and usage costs. Steel’s 2026 FAQ advertises $30 in free credits for its Launch offering and a Scale plan priced at $250 per month plus usage. Treat the credits as a one-time allowance and the Scale figure as a recurring plan price; neither is a complete estimate of model, traffic, or engineering costs.
Use it when
Choose Steel when the browser fleet is the problem you want solved, not when you need a ready-made workflow designer. It is a better fit than a managed all-in-one agent if your team wants to own the planner, prompts, data schemas, and application logic.
Browserbase: managed sessions and production tooling
Browserbase provides hosted browser sessions and model tooling, and it maintains Stagehand. Its pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists Free, $20, $99, and custom monthly tiers. The page does not establish that a particular tier includes a fixed number of browser hours, model tokens, proxy traffic, or CAPTCHA operations, so calculate those separately for your workload.
Why teams use it
A managed runtime can supply session creation, browser lifecycle handling, scaling, and production-oriented observability without your team maintaining a browser cluster. You can pair the service with Stagehand or other browser-driving code while keeping application-specific logic in your repository.

Hosted sessions reduce infrastructure work but move browser execution and some operational data outside your environment. Confirm data-retention, region, network-egress, credential-handling, recording, and deletion policies before sending regulated information. If a requirement mandates that browsers run inside your private network, a self-hosted Playwright, Stagehand, Skyvern, or Steel deployment is more aligned.
How the alternatives compare on the decisions that matter
Control and data residency
| Need | Most aligned options | What you still must operate |
|---|---|---|
| All browser traffic and artifacts stay in your environment | Local Playwright, local Stagehand, self-hosted Skyvern, self-hosted Steel | Browsers, workers, credentials, logs, queues, upgrades, and model connectivity |
| Managed sessions with less infrastructure work | Browserbase or Steel Cloud | Vendor governance, usage controls, application code, and model budgets |
| Non-developers edit reusable workflows | Skyvern | Workflow governance, validation rules, and either self-hosting or cloud operations |
| Strictly reproducible CI automation | Playwright, with Stagehand only at selected steps | Selectors, fixtures, browser versions, and test maintenance |
Determinism versus flexibility
Known selectors and assertions make Playwright the most deterministic. Stagehand adds flexibility at chosen points while preserving a code path around them. Skyvern expresses broader intent and can adapt across page layouts, but that flexibility introduces model variance. Browser infrastructure products do not decide this trade-off; they host whichever agent strategy you implement.

Workflow scope
Playwright targets scripts and CI. Stagehand targets selective AI steps in code. Skyvern targets multi-step workflows with extraction, validation, integrations, and no-code editing. Steel and Browserbase target the browser runtime for an agent your team designs.
What the cost really includes
Compare each candidate with the same monthly workload. A useful estimate is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Total cost = platform or hosting fees + model tokens + browser time + proxy or CAPTCHA usage + storage and data transfer + engineering maintenance + support and incident cost
| Cost category | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Platform | Is there a recurring tier, per-session charge, or custom contract? Are free credits one-time or recurring? |
| Model | How many calls occur per task, which model is used, and what happens when retries or page changes trigger more calls? |
| Browser | How long is each session, how many run concurrently, and do idle or failed sessions consume capacity? |
| Network features | Do proxies, residential routes, stealth modes, CAPTCHA solving, or egress incur separate usage charges? |
| Engineering | Who updates browser images, repairs selectors, tunes prompts, manages queues, and investigates failed runs? |
| Support and compliance | Do you need contractual support, a specific region, audit evidence, retention controls, or an enterprise agreement? |
Local open-source software can have a zero platform charge while being more expensive in engineering time. Managed services can be cheaper at low volume because they eliminate operations work, then become more expensive as browser hours, concurrency, and proxy traffic grow. Recalculate after measuring a representative workload rather than extrapolating from a demo.
Interpreting a vendor benchmark
Browser Use’s alternatives guide reports a score of 72.9 at $0.11 in model cost per task for its own configuration. That is vendor-reported, benchmark-specific evidence—not a general price or success-rate guarantee for another workflow. Your task may require different models, more steps, retries, or browser infrastructure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A decision path for a team migrating away
- Inventory the workflow. Record pages, credentials, uploads, downloads, expected fields, failure consequences, average session length, peak concurrency, and regions that must be supported.
- Classify every step. Mark it deterministic, variable but bounded, or open-ended. Keep deterministic steps in code; reserve AI for the latter two categories.
- Set the control boundary. Decide whether browsers, cookies, screenshots, prompts, and extracted data may leave your network. This determines local, self-hosted, or managed candidates before feature comparisons.
- Build a deterministic baseline. Implement navigation, authentication, waits, assertions, and cleanup in Playwright. This gives you a measurable fallback even if you later add an agent.
- Add the smallest AI surface. Try Stagehand’s
observe(),act(), orextract()for isolated steps. If the requirement is a reusable business workflow with no-code editing and validation, prototype it in Skyvern instead. - Select the runtime. Run locally or self-host Steel when ownership and residency dominate. Use Browserbase or Steel Cloud when session operations, scaling, stealth, proxies, CAPTCHA handling, or persistence outweigh hosting control.
- Define acceptance checks. Validate URLs, downloaded files, field formats, totals, and side effects in code. A model saying that an action succeeded is not proof that the business outcome is correct.
- Measure total cost. Track model calls, browser minutes, retries, concurrency, proxy traffic, failed tasks, and engineer-hours for at least one representative period.
- Gate risky actions. Require human approval before purchases, account changes, irreversible submissions, or sending messages to external parties.
Reliability and security controls
Keep secrets out of prompts and logs
Inject credentials through a secret manager or runtime environment, not through natural-language instructions. Redact cookies, tokens, personal data, and payment details from traces and screenshots. Set retention and deletion rules for browser profiles and downloaded files.
Make retries safe
Use idempotency keys or a state check before repeating an action. A retry after a timeout can otherwise submit a form twice or create duplicate records. Store the last confirmed business state, not only the model’s narrative.
Best Value
Pin and test browser versions
Browser updates can change selectors, permissions, downloads, and anti-bot behavior. Pin images or supported versions in CI, run a smoke suite after upgrades, and promote changes gradually to production workers.
Limit autonomy
Use allowlisted domains, network egress policies, maximum step counts, timeouts, and spending limits. Stop when validation fails or the page deviates materially from the expected state. An agent that can browse broadly should not automatically be allowed to approve transactions.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Runs pass locally but fail in CI | Different browser binary, viewport, timezone, or missing dependency | Install and pin the same Playwright browser build, emulate the required device, and capture traces in CI. |
| AI clicks the wrong control | Ambiguous labels or a page with multiple similar elements | Use a narrower intent, provide structured context, constrain the allowed action, and assert the resulting URL or state. |
| Extraction returns plausible but wrong data | Schema is too broad or the page contains repeated values | Define field types and validation rules, identify the target section, and reject values that fail business constraints. |
| Tasks become expensive after a site redesign | Retries and extra model calls multiply | Set retry and step budgets, detect layout changes early, and keep a deterministic fallback for stable controls. |
| Self-hosted workers run out of capacity | Unbounded concurrency, leaked sessions, or oversized browser profiles | Apply queue limits, enforce session cleanup, monitor memory and CPU, and scale workers from measured concurrency. |
| Managed sessions conflict with compliance | Unknown region, retention, recording, or egress behavior | Verify contractual controls and deployment region, disable unnecessary recordings, or move the browser runtime in-house. |
Recommended architectures by use case
Regression testing and internal admin tools
Use Playwright with explicit selectors, fixtures, and assertions. Add Stagehand only where a small part of the interface changes frequently. Keep browsers in CI or a private worker pool and treat model calls as exceptional rather than the default path.
Recommended Free Tools
Supplier or marketplace data collection
Use Skyvern when the process spans multiple portals and requires extraction, validation, and handoffs. Self-host it when supplier data is sensitive; use its managed cloud only after checking retention and region requirements. For a developer-owned implementation, combine Stagehand with a browser runtime and enforce a schema for every extracted record.
High-volume, anti-bot-sensitive sessions
Separate concerns: use Stagehand or your own agent for decisions, then evaluate Steel Cloud or Browserbase for session capacity and operational features. Budget proxy, CAPTCHA, persistence, and browser time independently from model tokens.
Regulated or private-network automation
Start with local Playwright or Stagehand, or self-host Skyvern or Steel. Keep model access on an approved endpoint, redact observability data, and document where each artifact is stored. Managed hosting is acceptable only if its contractual and technical controls meet the requirement.
Bottom-line recommendations
- Pick Playwright for stable, testable automation where your team can maintain code.
- Pick Stagehand when you want Playwright control and AI only for selected actions or extraction.
- Pick Skyvern for reusable, multi-step workflows that benefit from natural language, validation, integrations, and no-code editing.
- Pick Steel self-hosted when owning the browser fleet and data path is central; pick Steel Cloud when managed stealth, proxies, CAPTCHA handling, or persistence justify its cost.
- Pick Browserbase when hosted sessions and production tooling are more valuable than operating browsers yourself.
Start with the smallest architecture that satisfies your control and reliability requirements. Measure model calls, browser time, retries, traffic, and maintenance before declaring one option cheaper.
