Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTraditional browser automation is usually cheaper and more reliable for stable, repeatable workflows. Playwright or Selenium scripts run with predictable selectors, assertions and retries, so their recurring software cost is low after implementation. Browser agents become more valuable when tasks vary, the interface is unfamiliar, or no stable API and selector strategy exists. They trade that flexibility for model-inference charges, screenshots or accessibility snapshots, longer runtimes, hosted-browser fees and additional safety review.
The practical comparison is not cost per raw run. Measure cost per successful completion, including retries, maintenance, infrastructure and human approvals. A deterministic script can be the best choice for checkout, login and regression tests; an agent can be the better starting point for changing travel, research or back-office workflows.

What is the difference?
Traditional browser automation
Traditional automation follows instructions that a developer defines in advance. A Playwright or Selenium test locates elements, enters values, clicks controls and checks expected results. The workflow is explicit: selectors, waits, assertions, test data and error handling are all part of the program.
This determinism makes a fixed process reproducible. If the same browser version, data and environment are used, a failed run can usually be replayed with the same steps and inspected through logs, traces or screenshots. The trade-off is maintenance: a renamed button, changed DOM structure, new authentication step or altered navigation can break the script until someone updates it.

Browser agents
A browser agent receives a goal and chooses actions while it works. OpenAI describes its Computer-Using Agent as a system that “processes raw pixel data to understand what’s happening on the screen and uses a virtual mouse and keyboard to complete actions.” An agent may inspect a screenshot or accessibility snapshot, infer which control matters, click it, observe the result and revise its plan.
That approach can handle unfamiliar layouts and varied instructions without a complete selector map. It also introduces probabilistic behavior. The model may choose a different path on another run, misunderstand a label, spend extra steps exploring, or require a person to approve an external side effect.
Which option is cheaper?
Where scripted automation spends money
After a Playwright or Selenium workflow has been implemented, each additional run generally has low marginal software cost. The larger expenses are engineering time, browser and CI infrastructure, test data, retries and maintenance after a user-interface release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Initial implementation: engineers map selectors, waits, assertions, fixtures and recovery paths.
- Execution: CI workers, browsers, storage for traces and screenshots, and any parallel test capacity.
- Maintenance: updates when the DOM, authentication flow, browser behavior or third-party content changes.
- Failure handling: reruns and investigation when timing, network or environment problems create false failures.
A script can therefore be inexpensive per run but expensive to own if the interface changes every week or if selectors are fragile. Stable workflows amortize the initial engineering cost well; volatile workflows do not.
Where an agent spends money
An agent adds a charge for model inference or an API call on each decision cycle. It may also consume tokens or processing time for screenshots, accessibility snapshots and action results. Hosted browsers, longer sessions, retries and human confirmation add further cost.
- Inference: one task may require several observations and decisions rather than one fixed sequence.
- Context: screenshots, page text and accessibility data can increase token or processing usage.
- Runtime: exploratory behavior usually takes longer than a known selector-and-click sequence.
- Operations: hosted-browser minutes, session storage, concurrency and monitoring can be billed separately.
- Safety review: payments, messages, account changes and other irreversible actions may need a person to confirm.
There is no universal vendor price that makes an agent or a script cheaper in every case. Model, region, browser-hosting and concurrency rates change, so budget with current prices for the exact workload rather than a headline per-task estimate.

Use a cost-per-success formula
For each workflow, calculate:
Total cost per successful completion = (implementation amortization + execution + infrastructure + retries + maintenance + human review) ÷ successful completions.
Recommended Free Tools
For a script, implementation and maintenance usually dominate. For an agent, inference, runtime and review can dominate. A 90% success rate can make an apparently inexpensive agent cost more than a 99.5% script once nine out of ten attempts require a retry or operator intervention.
Which option is more reliable?
Reliability of deterministic scripts
For a fixed workflow with stable selectors and explicit assertions, Playwright or Selenium is easier to reproduce, debug and regression-test. You can pin test data, record exact steps and fail when an expected condition is not met instead of allowing the system to improvise.
Reliability still depends on the environment. Browser startup, HTTP servers, third-party resources and WebDriver instrumentation can affect timing and results. Selenium’s official documentation states: “Performance testing using Selenium and WebDriver is generally not advised.” Treat browser automation results as end-to-end functional measurements, not as a substitute for a dedicated load-testing system.
Reliability of agents
Agents can adapt when a layout changes, but adaptation is not the same as correctness. They may identify a visually similar control, misread a page state or continue after a warning. Their success rate is strongly tied to task complexity and how unfamiliar the environment is.

OpenAI reported 38.1% on OSWorld, 58.1% on WebArena and 87.0% on WebVoyager for its Computer-Using Agent in 2025. OpenAI also reported 10/10 success on several repeated simple interaction trials, but only 3/10 on one complex Seattle property-search task. OpenAI cautions that CUA is early-stage and is not expected to perform reliably in all scenarios.

Other published figures are not directly interchangeable. Browser Use’s official blog index lists an 89.1% WebVoyager result from 2024; that is a vendor claim, and benchmark setup, model version, task selection and failure handling may differ. A 2025 production-agent paper reported approximately 85% on WebGames across 53 challenges, compared with approximately 50% for prior agents and 95.7% for humans. These numbers show the spread of difficulty, not a universal ranking.
Benchmark results in context
| System or source | Reported result | What it indicates | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Computer-Using Agent | 38.1% on OSWorld (2025) | Performance on computer-use tasks can remain difficult in broad, realistic environments. | OpenAI-reported benchmark result. |
| OpenAI Computer-Using Agent | 58.1% on WebArena (2025) | Web tasks are materially harder than a short, repeated click sequence. | OpenAI-reported benchmark result. |
| OpenAI Computer-Using Agent | 87.0% on WebVoyager (2025) | Agents can perform well on some web-navigation suites. | OpenAI-reported benchmark result. |
| OpenAI repeated trials | 10/10 on several simple interactions; 3/10 on one complex Seattle property-search task | Task design and complexity can dominate reliability. | Results describe the reported trials, not every workflow. |
| Browser Use | 89.1% on WebVoyager (2024) | A vendor reports strong performance on one benchmark. | Vendor claim; not an apples-to-apples comparison with every other result. |
| Production-agent paper | Approximately 85% on WebGames across 53 challenges (2025) | Newer agents can improve on prior systems while remaining below human performance. | Compared with approximately 50% for prior agents and 95.7% for humans in that paper. |
Do not choose a tool from one benchmark number. OSWorld, WebArena, WebVoyager and WebGames use different environments, task definitions and difficulty distributions. A useful pilot repeats your own workflows with your own accounts, data and failure consequences.
Decision table: where each approach fits
| Situation | Recommended starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Stable checkout, login, regression or data-entry flow | Playwright or Selenium | Lowest recurring inference cost and strongest repeatability. |
| Many known tests across Chromium, Firefox and WebKit | Playwright | Official multi-browser project support and bundled browser management. |
| Existing WebDriver ecosystem or language bindings | Selenium | Mature WebDriver approach and broad integration history; validate performance separately. |
| Variable research, travel, shopping or back-office tasks with no stable API | Browser-agent prototype | Adaptation can outweigh inference cost when selectors and APIs are unavailable. |
| Irreversible actions, payments or account changes | Either approach with explicit assertions and human confirmation | Reduce the blast radius of an incorrect action. |
When Playwright is the better baseline
Choose Playwright when the team owns a broad set of known browser tests and wants one project model for multiple engines. Playwright documents projects for Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, Chrome and Edge, and recommends keeping browser and Playwright versions current. Its bundled browser management can reduce setup drift between developer machines and CI.
Design a maintainable Playwright suite
- Define the user-visible contract. Write the expected URL, heading, saved record or confirmation message before choosing selectors.
- Prefer resilient locators. Use accessible roles, labels and stable test identifiers rather than long CSS or XPath chains tied to layout.
- Wait for states, not arbitrary delays. Assert that a control is visible, enabled or complete instead of sleeping for a guessed number of milliseconds.
- Isolate data. Create unique test records or reset fixtures so one run cannot silently depend on a previous run.
- Run the same project in CI. Keep browser versions current and retain traces or screenshots only when a failure needs investigation.
- Fail closed. If an assertion does not pass, stop before submitting a payment, deleting data or sending a message.
When Selenium is the better baseline
Selenium fits organizations that already have a WebDriver ecosystem, established language bindings, grid infrastructure or a large existing test estate. Its broad integration history can make migration more expensive than continuing with a well-maintained suite.
Account for WebDriver variability
- Separate functional assertions from performance testing; Selenium’s documentation advises against using WebDriver for performance testing.
- Record browser, driver and operating-system versions with every failure.
- Control network dependencies where possible, because third-party resources can change timing and content.
- Use explicit waits and state checks to avoid racing the browser.
- Keep retries limited and visible. Unlimited retries can hide a real regression.
When an agent is worth the extra cost
Prototype an agent when the task is genuinely variable: a user may phrase the request differently, pages may change frequently, or no dependable API and selector strategy exists. Examples include gathering information from unfamiliar sites, navigating changing travel forms or handling internal back-office queues whose layouts differ by case.
Set a narrow task boundary
- Describe the goal and allowed scope. State which sites, accounts, fields and actions are in bounds.
- Provide completion criteria. Require a specific confirmation, record ID or final page state.
- Limit permissions. Use a dedicated account, least-privilege credentials and restricted payment or messaging capabilities.
- Require confirmation for side effects. Pause before purchases, transfers, deletions, submissions, password changes or external messages.
- Capture evidence. Store the final screenshot, page text, action log and reason for any human approval.
- Stop on ambiguity. A missing field, unexpected domain, warning banner or conflicting instruction should trigger a handoff, not improvisation.
Security and safety differences
Prompt injection and hostile page content
A browser agent reads content supplied by a page. Text on that page can attempt to redirect the agent, request secrets or tell it to ignore its original goal. Treat page content as untrusted input. Keep credentials outside the model context where possible, restrict domains, and have a policy layer validate every consequential action.

Run a representative pilot instead of comparing marketing demos. Divide tasks into stable scripted flows, moderately variable flows and unfamiliar tasks. Use the same browser region, network conditions, account permissions and data volume for every candidate.
| Metric | How to measure it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Successful completion rate | Completed tasks ÷ attempted tasks, reported by workflow class. | Separates simple wins from difficult cases. |
| Total cost per success | All engineering, infrastructure, inference, retry and review costs ÷ successful tasks. | Captures the real economic outcome. |
| Latency | Record p50 and p95 time from start to verified completion. | Shows both typical and worst common user experience. |
| Retry rate | Count automatic and manual reattempts. | Exposes hidden cost and operational friction. |
| Maintenance hours | Track hours needed after each interface release. | Measures adaptability and ownership burden. |
| Observability | Check whether logs, screenshots, traces and final-state evidence explain failures. | A fast diagnosis can outweigh a small difference in raw success rate. |
| Security controls | Test domain restrictions, credential handling, approval gates and prompt-injection resistance. | Reliability is not acceptable if the system can cause an uncontrolled side effect. |
| Human-review rate | Approvals or handoffs ÷ attempted tasks. | Shows how much labor remains outside the automation. |
Common failure modes and fixes
The script fails after a redesign
Inspect the failing locator and the saved trace. Replace layout-dependent selectors with role, label or stable test identifiers, then add an assertion for the new page state. Do not simply increase timeouts: that can hide a permanent mismatch.
The script is intermittently slow
Check browser startup, WebDriver communication, HTTP servers and third-party resources. Separate functional failures from environmental timing, and avoid using Selenium as a load-testing tool.

The agent repeats actions or loops
Set a step or time budget, detect duplicate submissions, and require progress evidence after each major action. A loop should end in a controlled handoff rather than consume unlimited inference calls.
A benchmark result does not match production
Recreate the production workflow in a private pilot. Benchmarks differ in task difficulty, page design, model version and scoring. Report success, retries, latency and review rate for your own workflow classes.
A practical hybrid architecture
Many teams do not need an either-or decision. Use deterministic automation for the known spine of a process and an agent only for the variable segment.
- Script authentication and setup. Keep credentials, environment checks and navigation to the target area under explicit control.
- Hand off the variable step. Give the agent a narrow goal, permitted domains and structured input.
- Validate the result with code. Check IDs, totals, statuses and required fields using deterministic assertions.
- Require approval for side effects. Present the exact action and destination before submission.
- Return to scripted cleanup. Save evidence, close sessions and update the test record with a known status.
This arrangement limits inference to the part that benefits from flexibility while preserving reproducibility around credentials, validation and irreversible actions.
What to choose first
Start with Playwright when you need broad, known coverage across Chromium, Firefox and WebKit and can define stable assertions. Start with Selenium when your organization already depends on WebDriver tooling, language bindings or grid integrations. Start with a browser-agent prototype only when variability or lack of an API makes selector-driven automation disproportionately expensive.
Whichever path you choose, run a time-boxed pilot and publish the same scorecard: successful completions by workflow, total cost per success, p50/p95 latency, retries, maintenance hours, evidence quality, security failures and human-review rate. That comparison answers the business question more accurately than a raw benchmark percentage or an advertised per-run price.
