Neither Broadcom stock (AVGO) nor a semiconductor ETF is the better choice for every investor. AVGO gives you direct exposure to one company with both semiconductor and infrastructure software businesses. A fund such as the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) spreads exposure across a basket of semiconductor companies, but still concentrates your investment in one industry. The better fit depends on what you already own, how much concentration you can tolerate, and what role you want the investment to play.
What are you choosing between?
Buying AVGO means owning shares in Broadcom Inc. Buying SOXX means owning shares in a fund designed to track the NYSE Semiconductor Index. The first is a single-company position; the second is a fund-defined basket of companies within the semiconductor sector. Neither is a broad-market substitute by itself.

Broadcom is also not purely a chip company. In its Form 10-Q for the fiscal quarter ended August 2, 2026, it reported semiconductor solutions revenue of $20.839 billion and infrastructure software revenue of $8.752 billion. Semiconductor solutions made up 70% of quarterly revenue. The filing attributes the semiconductor segment’s increase to demand for networking solutions, primarily custom AI accelerators and AI networking products.

| Factor | Broadcom (AVGO) | iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) |
|---|---|---|
| What you own | Shares in Broadcom Inc., a company reporting semiconductor solutions and infrastructure software as separate segments. | Shares in a fund tracking the NYSE Semiconductor Index; iShares reported 30 holdings as of October 5, 2026. |
| Business or sector exposure | Broadcom-specific business, operating, and customer risks; its revenue includes both semiconductors and infrastructure software. | A basket of semiconductor-sector companies. The basket reduces reliance on one issuer relative to owning AVGO alone, but does not diversify away from the semiconductor industry. |
| Ongoing fund expense | Not applicable as an ETF expense; any costs associated with buying or holding shares depend on the investor’s brokerage and account. | 0.33% listed expense ratio on the iShares fund page; check the current page because fees can change. |
| Fund assets | Not applicable; AVGO is a company’s stock, not a fund. | $48,597,994,157 as of October 6, 2026, according to iShares. This is a dated snapshot, not a permanent value. |
| Index or weighting detail | Not applicable; this is a stock, not an index-tracking fund. | Benchmark: NYSE Semiconductor Index. The cited fund facts establish the benchmark and holdings count, but not the index’s weighting rules. |
SOXX’s 30-holding count is a snapshot, not a guarantee of a fixed portfolio size. A fund’s actual exposure depends on its holdings and index rules, so review the current fund materials rather than assuming every semiconductor ETF is built the same way.

What the recent Broadcom figures do—and do not—tell you
For the three fiscal quarters ended August 2, 2026, Broadcom reported semiconductor solutions revenue of $48.363 billion, up 88% from the comparable prior-year period. Broadcom attributed the segment’s growth primarily to networking demand, including custom AI accelerators and AI networking. That is reported historical performance, not a forecast of future growth or investment returns.
A strong business result does not by itself determine whether AVGO fits a portfolio. A single stock’s outcome remains tied to that company’s results and risks. SOXX instead spreads its exposure among fund holdings, while retaining sector-level risk: semiconductor companies can still be affected by shared industry conditions.

How concentration changes the risk
AVGO adds company-specific concentration
Broadcom reported that its five largest end customers, through all channels, accounted for approximately 55% of revenue in the quarter ended August 2, 2026. The company said it expected significant customer concentration to continue and warned that losing a top-five customer or seeing a significant demand decrease from one could materially adversely affect its business, results, and financial condition. It stated: “We expect to continue to experience significant customer concentration in future periods.”

Rank #3
SOXX spreads issuer exposure, not industry exposure
Owning multiple companies through a semiconductor ETF can reduce reliance on Broadcom alone, but it does not make the investment broadly diversified across the economy. The fund remains focused on semiconductor-sector companies. Its number of holdings does not, by itself, reveal how much each holding contributes to the fund’s risk; that requires checking current holdings and the index methodology.
How to decide which fits your portfolio
- Check what you already own. Look at your direct stock positions and the holdings of your existing funds. If you already have substantial AVGO exposure, adding SOXX may still leave you with semiconductor exposure, including possible overlap with AVGO. If you own neither, decide whether you want exposure to one company or a sector basket.
- Choose the role you want the position to play. AVGO is the more direct choice if your intended exposure is specifically to Broadcom. SOXX is the more direct choice if your intended exposure is a fund-defined basket of semiconductor companies. Neither automatically serves as a diversified core holding.
- Assess concentration against your risk tolerance and time horizon. Consider whether you could tolerate a large decline tied to one company’s results, or whether sector-wide swings would also be uncomfortable. The two options distribute risk differently; neither removes investment risk.
- Compare fund details before choosing an ETF. For SOXX, check current holdings, benchmark information, expenses, and fund assets on the iShares product page. Do not assume another semiconductor ETF has the same holdings, index rules, or fee.
- Decide whether you want an individual stock or a fund. A fund has its own ongoing expense and portfolio rules; a direct stock does not have an ETF expense ratio. Your brokerage or account may also have transaction or other charges, so check its terms.
SOXX’s scheduled share split
As of October 7, 2026, iShares had announced a forward split for SOXX. The record date was scheduled for November 3, the split for after the close on November 4, and split-adjusted trading for November 5, 2026. These dates were still in the future on October 7; confirm the fund page for any change. A share split changes the number of shares and the per-share price proportionally; it does not, by itself, change the value of an investor’s total position.

AVGO is a concentrated bet on Broadcom, whose operations include substantial semiconductor and infrastructure software businesses. SOXX offers a basket of semiconductor companies and charges a listed 0.33% expense ratio, but remains an industry-focused fund. Compare each option with your existing holdings and goals rather than treating recent company growth or a larger number of holdings as proof of future returns or suitability.
