How Claude Code Token Usage Compares With Cursor and GitHub Copilot

Claude Code, Cursor and Copilot meter AI usage differently. Learn how their token billing, monthly pools, credits, and usage reporting compare.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Claude Code, Cursor and GitHub Copilot do not use one interchangeable “token” meter. Claude Code may bill API-key sessions by token or draw on an account pool; Cursor separates usage into monthly pools and applies model rates; Copilot converts model-token charges into AI Credits. To compare what you might pay, look beyond token counts to your sign-in method, plan allowance, model, token categories, and overage settings.

The comparison below reflects official vendor documentation accessed October 7, 2026. It describes billing mechanics, not a controlled trial of identical coding tasks. Rates and included usage can change.

What each product counts—and how it charges

Product Usage meter Included usage and overages Where to check usage
Claude Code Depends on authentication: an Enterprise seat uses an organizational pool with rolling resets; API-key sessions are pay-as-you-go and billed per token. Account or seat terms determine included usage. API-key usage is billed as it is used; an Enterprise seat may reach its limit and need to wait for a reset. For API billing, use /cost for current-session token and dollar usage. Use /context to inspect loaded context.
Cursor Separate monthly Cursor Models and Other Models pools. Third-party models use model API rates. Included use depends on plan. On-demand usage can continue after included use is exhausted; availability and settings depend on the account. Check the dashboard or Spending tab for pool usage and on-demand charges.
GitHub Copilot Model-specific input, output and cached-token charges are converted into GitHub AI Credits. One credit is $0.01 USD. Monthly AI-credit allowances vary by plan and account. Additional AI-credit usage may be enabled and budgeted; otherwise, the applicable allowance governs use. Check Copilot usage settings and the published model pricing table.

These meters are not directly interchangeable. A token count is not the same as a dollar charge, a monthly pool, or a fixed number of prompts. See the vendor documentation for Claude Code usage and limits, Cursor models and pricing, Cursor usage and limits, and GitHub Copilot model pricing.

Why Claude Code token use can grow during a session

Claude Code usage depends in part on the context sent with each turn. Anthropic’s guide puts it simply: “Every turn sends three things:” conversation history, project context, and the current request. As a conversation continues, the history and context supplied to the model can contribute to the tokens processed.

Anthropic recommends managing context deliberately: refer to a file by path instead of pasting a large file when practical, trim logs before sharing them, and point to large artifacts by path. The quick-reference commands include /model, /cost, /clear, /compact, and /context. These help select a model, inspect or manage a session, and view usage; they do not guarantee a particular cost reduction.

The billing path matters as much as the context. An API-key session is pay-as-you-go and billed per token, while an Enterprise seat uses an organizational pool with rolling resets, according to the reviewed Anthropic guide. Do not assume that a Claude Code session has the same billing presentation for every sign-in or plan.

Cursor: separate pools, model rates, and cache categories

Cursor documentation distinguishes monthly usage for Cursor Models from usage for Other Models. Third-party models are priced at their model API rates, and the dashboard reports both pools. If included use is exhausted, on-demand usage can be an option, depending on account settings; upgrading is another possibility.

The rate card illustrates why a single “cost per token” can be misleading. In the pricing table reviewed on October 7, 2026, Claude Sonnet 5 was listed at $2 per million input tokens, $2.50 per million cache-write tokens, $0.20 per million cache-read tokens, and $10 per million output tokens. For Teams and Enterprise, Cursor also lists a $0.25-per-million-token Cursor Token Rate on third-party requests. These are rate-card figures, not a prediction of what a particular coding task will cost.

When checking a Cursor charge, identify whether you used a Cursor model or a third-party model, which pool it drew from, and whether your account is on an individual or business plan. The applicable rates and pool allowances are subject to change.

GitHub Copilot: model-token charges expressed as AI Credits

Copilot’s model pricing distinguishes input, output, and cached tokens, with cache-write tokens included where applicable in the model’s rate table. Charges are converted to AI Credits, each worth $0.01 USD. Your plan’s monthly credit allowance and the selected model’s rates determine what that means for your account; a credit allowance does not translate into a fixed number of prompts or coding tasks.

Paid Copilot code completions and next-edit suggestions are treated separately: GitHub says they are not billed in AI Credits and remain unlimited on paid plans. Keep that separate from model-based chat or agent usage when estimating credit consumption.

How to make a useful cost comparison

A fair comparison is a record of one representative run under specified account and model settings—not a universal token-per-task ranking. For each run, capture the plan and authentication method, selected model, token categories disclosed by the product, agent rounds or retries, included usage consumed, and any out-of-pocket overage.

  1. Choose a representative task. Use the same task definition and comparable repository context for each product. Record the date and account or plan, since rates and allowances may change.
  2. Record the model and billing path. Note whether Claude Code used an API key or an account seat, whether Cursor used a Cursor or third-party model, and which Copilot model was selected.
  3. Capture the usage details each product exposes. Record input and output tokens, cache-read and cache-write tokens when available, agent rounds or retries, and usage drawn from any included pool or credit allowance.
  4. Separate included use from extra charges. Note whether the run consumed plan-included usage, triggered on-demand charges, or used pay-as-you-go API billing.
  5. Label the result narrowly. Report the observed cost for that task, date, model, account configuration, and token mix. Do not present one run as proof that a service is generally cheaper.

The available billing documentation does not provide a matched-task comparison across these products, so published per-token rates alone cannot establish the cost of an equivalent agent task. Context sent on each turn, caching, output size, model choice, and tool-driven rounds can all affect consumption.

Why token counts are not a reliable product ranking

A 2026 arXiv preprint, How Do AI Agents Spend Your Money? Analyzing and Predicting Token Consumption in Agentic Coding Tasks, reports up to 30-fold variation in total tokens across repeated runs of the same task in its tested experiments. That result is specific to the paper’s tasks and methods; it does not show that Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot individually varies by that amount in ordinary use, and it is not a price or quality comparison among the three.

Since these products have different billing paths, token categories, allowances, and overage rules, no universal “tokens per coding task” or cheapest-product ranking follows from the available evidence. The useful comparison is the cost and usage record for your own representative task under clearly stated settings.
