Brent is the more internationally representative, seaborne benchmark; West Texas Intermediate (WTI) is the principal U.S. benchmark tied to physical delivery at Cushing, Oklahoma. Investors should use Brent to understand global cargoes, shipping disruptions and geopolitical supply risk, and WTI to understand U.S. production, pipelines, inventories and domestic refining.
Neither benchmark is universally “better.” The useful choice is the one that matches the asset, fund, futures contract or regional exposure you actually own. The Brent–WTI spread is mainly a signal about location, logistics and regional supply-demand conditions, so compare equivalent delivery months rather than unrelated front-month quotes.

What Brent and WTI actually measure
Brent and WTI are reference prices used to price many other crude grades. A producer, refiner or trader normally starts with one of these markers and then adds or subtracts a differential. That adjustment reflects the crude’s quality, transportation cost and local market conditions.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration identifies Brent, WTI and Dubai/Oman as three of the most significant crude-oil benchmarks. Its description of a differential includes quality characteristics such as API gravity (density) and sulfur content, transport costs from the production area to refineries, and regional and global supply and demand, including refinery utilization.

Why Brent is considered the global benchmark
A waterborne market can connect regions
Brent is associated with North Sea streams and a seaborne market. Cargoes can move between producing and consuming regions, subject to freight costs, port capacity, available vessels and trade restrictions. That mobility makes Brent particularly informative when investors are assessing international crude flows or a disruption that affects shipping.
ICE describes Brent as the price barometer for approximately 80% of global crude. The figure is an exchange description of Brent’s market role, not a claim that every barrel is priced identically or that Brent is the delivered price everywhere.
The Brent basket has changed
Since June 2023, the ICE Brent basket has included WTI Midland alongside Brent, Forties, Oseberg, Ekofisk and Troll. WTI Midland is therefore part of the basket supporting the benchmark even though WTI futures remain a separate Cushing-based contract. This change is one reason readers should distinguish between the Brent benchmark and the specific North Sea streams that originally gave it its name.
Why WTI is the key U.S. benchmark
Cushing is the physical basis
WTI is the North American light-sweet crude benchmark. The NYMEX WTI contract specifies delivery at Cushing, Oklahoma, a major U.S. pipeline and storage hub. Prices therefore respond to the amount of crude arriving at Cushing, available tank capacity, pipeline constraints and the routes available to move barrels onward.
Local conditions can dominate
A change in U.S. production or pipeline flows can move WTI even when the global seaborne market is relatively calm. Conversely, a global shipping shock can move Brent more sharply than WTI if the immediate effect is on waterborne supply rather than Cushing inventories. The benchmark basis is the reason the two prices can diverge without either market being “wrong.”

Quality matters, but it does not explain the whole spread
Both Brent and WTI are generally associated with relatively light, sweet crude, but their prices are not determined by quality alone. API gravity, sulfur content, transport costs, refinery configuration, storage availability and regional demand all influence the differential applied to a particular grade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt is therefore inaccurate to treat a Brent premium as a permanent quality ranking. Brent can trade above WTI because international supply is tight, shipping is disrupted or U.S. takeaway is constrained. WTI can strengthen relative to Brent when U.S. demand, exports or local logistics improve. The spread is a market-location relationship, not a fixed statement that one crude is always superior.
How the futures contracts differ
Exchange and delivery location
The EIA describes Brent futures as trading on ICE in London and WTI futures as trading on NYMEX in New York. Brent futures are underpinned by North Sea BFOE cargoes, while WTI futures use delivery to Cushing. Those different delivery systems transmit local physical conditions into the futures price.
Brent’s physical and index settlement
ICE describes its Brent future as physically deliverable, with an option to cash settle against the ICE Brent Index. The Brent Index is calculated from qualifying North Sea cash or forward-market trades and assessments for the relevant delivery month. ICE publishes the index after front-month expiry and uses it as the final cash-settlement price.
WTI’s Cushing settlement
WTI futures are physically settled through delivery at Cushing under NYMEX rules. Cushing’s pipeline network and inventory levels are consequently central to the contract’s behavior. An investor who never intends to take delivery still needs to understand that physical basis because it affects futures prices, calendar spreads and the roll from one contract month to the next.

Do not compare mismatched months
Expiration calendars for Brent and WTI are not identical. Comparing a Brent front month with a WTI front month can create a misleading “spread” if the contracts represent different delivery periods. Use the same or economically equivalent delivery month, record whether each quote is spot, a futures contract or an index, and note the timestamp and currency before drawing a conclusion.

What the Brent–WTI spread means
The spread is commonly expressed as Brent minus WTI for matched contract months. A positive value means Brent is priced above WTI for those terms; a negative value means WTI is higher. The number is useful because it compares two regional reference markets, but it is not a standalone buy or sell signal.
What can widen the spread
- Stronger international or Atlantic Basin pricing relative to the United States.
- Constrained U.S. pipeline takeaway that leaves more barrels near Cushing.
- Rising Cushing inventories or limited available storage.
- Shipping disruption, geopolitical risk or a seaborne supply interruption that lifts Brent.
- Regional refinery demand that favors one market over the other.
What can narrow the spread
- Improved U.S. export access and stronger flows from inland hubs to waterborne markets.
- Stronger U.S. domestic demand relative to international demand.
- A relative change in global supply that eases Brent pricing.
- Lower Cushing inventories or improved local takeaway capacity.
These are hypotheses to test against inventory data, pipeline and vessel flows, refinery utilization, storage reports and the relevant contract months. A widening spread does not prove one particular cause, and the same headline event can affect the two benchmarks through different channels.
Which benchmark should an investor watch?
Choose Brent for global and seaborne exposure
Brent is the more relevant starting point when your thesis concerns internationally traded crude, Atlantic Basin cargoes, tanker availability, maritime chokepoints or geopolitical supply risk. It is also a useful reference for companies whose production or sales are priced against waterborne markers.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchChoose WTI for U.S. exposure
WTI is the better starting point when your thesis concerns U.S. shale output, Cushing inventories, domestic pipelines, U.S. export capacity or refiners whose feedstock economics are tied to the U.S. inland market. A U.S. producer’s realized price can still differ from WTI because of basin, quality and transport adjustments, but WTI is the relevant benchmark framework.
Use both for multinational companies
A multinational oil company may have upstream assets priced against several regional markers while its refined-product margins, debt hedges or derivatives reference another contract. Looking at only Brent or only WTI can hide the basis risk between production, transport and refining locations. Map each business segment to its actual pricing marker before making a company-level judgment.
A practical investor workflow
- Identify the exposure. Write down whether you own a producer, refiner, tanker operator, futures position, fund, CFD or another instrument. Note the country where the underlying cash flow is generated.
- Find the contract or index language. Check the instrument’s prospectus, exchange specification or issuer documentation for “Brent,” “WTI,” “ICE,” “NYMEX,” “Cushing,” an index name or a specific futures month.
- Match the physical region. Link seaborne or globally traded exposure to Brent-related data and U.S. inland or Cushing exposure to WTI-related data. If the asset spans both, track both benchmarks and the relevant basis differentials.
- Align delivery months. Compare equivalent contract months. Do not subtract two unrelated front-month quotes simply because both are labeled “front month.”
- Separate price from return. For a futures-based fund or derivative, account for roll yield, contango or backwardation, margin, contract size, trading hours and currency conversion. A benchmark can rise while the investor’s instrument delivers a different return.
- Check the physical evidence. Review inventories, refinery utilization, pipeline constraints, export flows and shipping conditions before interpreting a spread move.
- Write down the alternative explanation. If Brent rises relative to WTI, ask whether the move is caused by seaborne risk, U.S. storage pressure, a calendar mismatch or a change in quality and freight assumptions.
Benchmark exposure is not the same as owning crude
Investors access oil prices through different instruments, and each introduces risks beyond the headline quote.

Contango, backwardation and the roll
A futures curve is in contango when later delivery months are priced above nearer months and in backwardation when later months are lower. The curve can matter more to a rolling futures position than a single day’s change in Brent or WTI.

ICE reported average volatility of 36.5% for ICE Brent and 39.6% for NYMEX WTI over January 2015 through July 2024. Record these figures as a sample-period comparison: 36.5% — Intercontinental Exchange, 2024 and 39.6% — Intercontinental Exchange, 2024.
The figures describe that specific measurement period and should not be treated as a permanent rule that WTI is always more volatile or Brent is always calmer. Volatility varies with contract selection, calculation method, market regime and the period measured.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming Brent is always more expensive
Prices can switch relationship as logistics and regional supply change. Treat the spread as variable and investigate the physical drivers rather than labeling one benchmark permanently premium.
Treating the spread as a quality score
Density and sulfur matter, but transportation, storage, refinery demand and regional balances matter too. A spread move can be logistical even when crude quality has not changed.

Using the wrong delivery month
Different expiry calendars can make a mismatched front-month comparison look like a genuine regional move. Align the months before calculating Brent minus WTI.
Ignoring the delivery basis
A seaborne Brent contract and a Cushing-delivered WTI contract respond to different bottlenecks. A global headline does not automatically have the same effect on both.
Confusing benchmark direction with portfolio performance
Roll costs, contango, backwardation, fees, hedges, operating leverage and currency can cause an asset or fund to move differently from the referenced crude price.

Reading the spread without physical data
A spread is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a single cause. Check inventories, pipeline flows, export access, refinery utilization and shipping conditions before assigning a narrative.
Worked examples of benchmark selection
A U.S. shale producer
Start with WTI because the company’s production is linked to U.S. infrastructure and domestic takeaway. Then examine the basin differential, gathering and transport costs, hedges and the company’s realized price. WTI alone will not measure the producer’s margin.
A global shipping disruption
Start with Brent because the event affects waterborne crude movement and international supply risk. Then check whether U.S. exports, domestic inventories or substitute routes transmit the shock into WTI.
A refinery with imported feedstock
Neither benchmark is sufficient by itself. Determine whether the refinery buys seaborne grades priced against Brent, inland barrels priced against WTI or a basket of grades. Compare the crude input cost with the refined-product prices that determine the refinery margin.
A fund that rolls NYMEX contracts
Use WTI as the reference, but read the fund’s contract-month selection and roll calendar. Its return can diverge from a chart of front-month WTI because of curve shape, fees and cash management.
Investor checklist
- Is the economic exposure global and seaborne, U.S. and inland, or a combination?
- Does the instrument reference Brent, WTI, an index, a specific futures month or a derived product?
- Where is physical delivery or pricing basis located?
- Are the compared contracts for equivalent delivery months?
- What quality and transport differential applies to the underlying crude?
- Could Cushing storage, U.S. pipelines or export capacity dominate the move?
- Could shipping, ports or geopolitical risk dominate the move?
- How do contango, backwardation and the roll affect the instrument?
- What are the margin, financing, currency and fee effects?
- Have inventory, flow and refinery data been checked before interpreting the spread?
Bottom line for investors
Watch Brent for the global seaborne oil market and WTI for the U.S. Cushing-centered market. Use the benchmark that matches your exposure, and use both when a company or portfolio spans regions. The Brent–WTI spread is most valuable as a location and logistics indicator; calculate it with matched contract months and test any explanation against the underlying physical flows.
