Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUse breach and attack simulation (BAS) to continuously check whether your existing controls prevent or detect known attacker techniques. Use AI penetration testing when a model, LLM application, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system, agent, or model supply chain is part of the attack surface. BAS and AI penetration testing are not substitutes. A mature security programme normally combines recurring BAS, periodic human-led or AI-assisted penetration tests, and additional AI-specific testing for systems that can generate, retrieve, or execute actions.
The right mix depends on the question you need answered: control efficacy, vulnerability discovery, realistic attack paths, AI trustworthiness, or compliance evidence. This guide explains the difference, where each approach fits, how to set a safe cadence, and what to demand from an autonomous testing vendor.

What each approach is designed to answer
Breach and attack simulation and penetration testing overlap in their use of attacker techniques, but they measure different things.
Breach and attack simulation (BAS)
BAS repeatedly emulates selected adversary tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) against your environment. The objective is to verify that prevention, detection and response controls work as expected. A BAS run might execute a safe version of credential dumping, lateral movement, command execution or cloud discovery, then check whether an endpoint, identity, network or monitoring control blocked the action or generated useful telemetry.

OWASP’s DevSecOps guidance describes BAS as continuously and safely emulating real adversary techniques to validate whether defences actually detect and prevent them. The emphasis is on repeatability and control health rather than finding every possible weakness in an application.
Penetration testing
The NIST CSRC glossary defines penetration testing as a methodology in which assessors, working under constraints and using available documentation, attempt to circumvent an information system’s security features. A conventional test usually has a defined scope, a start and end date, and a report of vulnerabilities, exploitability and remediation priorities.
NCSC’s adversary-simulation guidance draws the distinction this way: adversary simulation focuses on the efficacy of technical controls and detection, while penetration testing is more focused on identifying technical vulnerabilities within IT systems. In practice, a skilled penetration test may chain several weaknesses into an attack path that a technique-by-technique BAS catalogue would not discover.
AI penetration testing
AI penetration testing applies that investigative approach to systems with an AI layer and to the conventional infrastructure around it. The target may be a foundation model, fine-tuned model, LLM application, RAG pipeline, agent, tool-calling workflow, training data process, model registry or inference API.
It tests whether an attacker can manipulate instructions, extract sensitive information, poison data or models, induce unsafe tool use, abuse memory, bypass safeguards or exploit the surrounding application. Results should include reproducible prompts or inputs, the resulting model behaviour, the affected data or action, the path through connected services, severity and practical remediation.
Comparison: BAS versus AI penetration testing
| Dimension | Breach and attack simulation | AI penetration testing or autonomous pentesting |
|---|---|---|
| Primary objective | Validate that prevention and detection controls work against known adversary techniques. | Discover and validate vulnerabilities and attack paths, including failures specific to AI systems. |
| Typical cadence | Continuous or recurring, especially after changes to configuration, logging, endpoint detection, SIEM rules or workloads. | Point-in-time or campaign-based. An autonomous platform may run more often, but each campaign still needs scope and safety governance. |
| Depth | Broad, repeatable technique coverage with controlled execution. | Deeper reasoning and exploitation of selected targets; quality depends on the model, tools, scope and human review. |
| AI coverage | Can include AI-related TTPs if the product supports them, but BAS alone does not establish that a model or agent is trustworthy. | Can test prompt injection, jailbreaks, leakage, poisoning, unsafe tool use, agent memory, model drift and AI supply-chain risks when they are explicitly in scope. |
| Evidence | Control pass/fail results, prevention and detection telemetry, timestamps and trend data. | Reproducible findings, exploit evidence, attack paths, severity, remediation guidance and disclosure of confidence and coverage. |
| Safety and governance | Rules of engagement, allow-lists, rate limits and safe test payloads remain necessary. | Requires explicit scope enforcement, stop controls, human approval, graduated autonomy, tamper-resistant logs, manipulation resistance and supply-chain transparency. |
How BAS works in a security programme
A BAS platform normally maintains a library of adversary techniques and executes selected scenarios through agents, connectors or controlled integrations. It observes whether a prevention control stopped the action and whether the detection stack recorded and escalated it. The useful output is not simply “the attack ran”; it is a trace showing what happened at each control point.
What BAS can validate
- Endpoint prevention and detection policies, including whether an EDR product blocks or alerts on a technique.
- Identity protections such as conditional access, multifactor authentication enforcement and privileged-account monitoring.
- Network segmentation, firewall rules, egress controls and cloud security groups.
- SIEM ingestion, parsing, correlation, alert routing and incident-response playbooks.
- Cloud workload protections and logging after a deployment or architecture change.
- Whether a known technique remains detectable across operating-system, application or infrastructure versions.
Where BAS creates the most value
BAS is the better first investment when your central question is, “Do our controls still prevent and detect the attacks we care about?” It is particularly useful in high-change environments where a new EDR policy, identity rule, cloud workload, logging pipeline or SIEM content can silently create control drift.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Connect BAS results to SIEM and EDR telemetry and to change-management workflows. A failed scenario should create an actionable record: the technique, affected asset, missing or ineffective control, owner, remediation date and re-test result. Trend views then show whether coverage improved or degraded after a change.
What BAS does not prove by itself
A passing BAS scenario means that the tested technique was blocked or detected under the tested conditions. It does not prove that every variation is blocked, that an attacker cannot chain other weaknesses, or that an AI model will resist manipulation. Technique libraries also reflect the scenarios a platform supports; an untested path remains an unknown.
What AI penetration testing must cover
AI systems introduce a behavioural layer that conventional vulnerability scanning and ordinary application tests do not fully exercise. Outputs can be non-deterministic, safeguards can be bypassed through context or multi-turn interaction, and an apparently harmless response can trigger a high-impact action through a connected tool.

Prompt injection and jailbreaks
Test direct user prompts, indirect instructions embedded in retrieved documents, tool responses, web pages and files, and multi-turn attempts to override the system prompt. Record the exact input sequence and whether the model disclosed hidden instructions, changed its operating policy or performed an unauthorised task.
Sensitive-information leakage
Assess whether the model reveals system prompts, training examples, credentials, personal data, confidential documents or cross-tenant information. RAG systems need tests for retrieval isolation, document-level permissions, citation handling and leakage through summaries or tool arguments.
Data and model poisoning
Review ingestion, labelling, fine-tuning, evaluation and model-update processes. A test may seek to insert malicious or misleading content into a knowledge base, alter a training set, register an unapproved model or exploit a compromised dependency. The goal is to establish whether poisoned material is detected, quarantined and traced to an owner.
Unsafe or excessive agency
Agents that can send messages, change records, execute code, call APIs or spend money need tests for least privilege, confirmation gates, transaction limits, destination allow-lists and rollback. A model that produces a dangerous instruction is a different risk from one that can execute it without approval.
Memory, state and non-determinism
Test whether sensitive information persists longer than intended, crosses users or sessions, or can be retrieved through a later conversation. Repeat important cases with controlled variations because model behaviour may change across runs, model versions, temperature settings, retrieval results and tool responses.

The surrounding application and infrastructure
AI testing should not stop at the prompt box. Include APIs, authentication, authorisation, databases, queues, secrets management, deployment pipelines, cloud configuration, observability and third-party model providers. An AI finding is often exploitable only because a conventional control is missing in the surrounding application.
OWASP’s AI Testing Guide identifies adversarial manipulation, sensitive-information leakage, data or model poisoning, excessive or unsafe agency and model drift as risks that conventional software testing does not fully cover. AISVS 1.0 provides testable requirements that can support AI penetration tests, red-team exercises and audits.
Do you need BAS if you already have a penetration test?
Usually, yes. A penetration test gives you a detailed assessment of a defined scope at a particular time. BAS supplies recurring evidence that the controls used to prevent and detect those attack paths continue to work after policies, software, identities, networks or workloads change.
For example, a penetration test may demonstrate that a tester reached a sensitive server through a chain of weaknesses and may recommend an EDR rule, segmentation change and privileged-access restriction. BAS can then run safe versions of the relevant techniques each week or after each material change, confirming whether the EDR rule still fires and whether the SIEM alert reaches the response team.
BAS does not replace the original investigation. It may not discover a newly introduced vulnerability, identify a novel business-logic flaw or reproduce the creativity of a human operator. Treat the two outputs as different evidence: penetration testing explains how an attacker can succeed; BAS monitors whether your defensive system continues to stop or expose the known methods.

Can AI penetration testing replace a human red team?
Not as a blanket rule. An autonomous system can run many probes quickly, explore variations and produce useful hypotheses, but its coverage is bounded by its tools, model, permissions, prompts and stopping logic. Human operators remain essential for setting objectives, judging business impact, interpreting ambiguous behaviour, approving production-impacting actions and independently validating critical findings.
Use AI assistance to increase breadth or shorten repetitive work, not to remove accountability. A high-impact finding should be reproducible by a person or by a separately controlled test, and a remediation decision should have an identifiable owner.
When autonomous testing is a good fit
- Large, well-inventoried environments where a human team cannot manually repeat low-risk checks.
- Applications with many input paths, tools or prompts that benefit from systematic variation.
- Development pipelines that need an early warning before a model, prompt, retrieval source or agent tool is released.
- Teams that can provide a sandbox, clear credentials, test data and an approval process.
When human-led testing should lead
- Production systems where an error could interrupt a critical service or alter real records.
- Highly regulated or safety-sensitive workflows.
- Tests involving destructive actions, social engineering, physical access or complex business logic.
- Situations in which the model, data handling or vendor supply chain cannot be independently inspected.
How often should you run BAS and penetration tests?
There is no universal interval that authoritative guidance proves to be optimal. Set cadence from risk, rate of change and governance obligations, then adjust it using your own baseline and repeat-test data.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use recurring BAS for control drift
Run BAS continuously where the platform and safety model support it, or on a regular schedule tied to your change process. Trigger an additional run after material changes to EDR or SIEM content, identity policies, network segmentation, cloud workloads, logging pipelines or incident-response playbooks.
Use campaign-based penetration testing for depth
Commission a scoped penetration test when a major system launches, an architecture changes, a high-risk exposure is discovered or an independent assessment is required. Repeat it at a risk-based interval and after significant changes rather than treating an annual date as proof that the environment stayed unchanged.
Reassess AI systems whenever their behaviour can change
Re-test after changing the model provider or version, system prompt, fine-tuning data, retrieval index, tool permissions, memory design, safety filter, orchestration framework or deployment environment. Monitor for model drift and repeat high-impact cases with known prompts and datasets.
A practical decision sequence
- Define the question. Decide whether you need control-efficacy evidence, vulnerability discovery, realistic attack-path analysis, AI trustworthiness evidence or compliance documentation.
- Inventory assets and change rate. Mark endpoints, identities, networks, cloud workloads, applications, models, RAG stores, agents, tools and supply-chain components. High-change environments generally gain more from recurring BAS.
- Establish a baseline. Use a human-led or AI-assisted penetration test to identify important attack paths and remediation priorities. For AI, include both the model layer and the surrounding application.
- Select BAS scenarios. Choose the highest-risk techniques from the baseline and map each to the prevention, detection and response controls that should react.
- Connect evidence to operations. Send results to the SIEM, EDR, ticketing and change-management systems. Assign owners and record re-test outcomes.
- Apply AI-specific tests. Test prompt injection, jailbreaks, leakage, poisoning, unsafe agency, memory and drift whenever those features are in scope.
- Re-test after material changes. Keep human approval for production-impacting actions and independently validate critical autonomous findings.
Governance checklist for an autonomous pentesting platform
OWASP’s Autonomous Penetration Testing Systems (APTS) guidance says APTS is not a standalone testing methodology. It complements PTES, the OWASP Web Security Testing Guide and OSSTMM by addressing problems unique to autonomous operation, including scope enforcement, safe autonomy, manipulation resistance and accountability.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use that principle as a procurement and operating checklist. Require written answers and demonstrations for each item:
- Scope enforcement: How does the platform validate domains, IP ranges, accounts, models and tools before every action? Can it prevent scope widening caused by a prompt, redirect or tool response?
- Impact classification: Does it distinguish read-only discovery, reversible changes and destructive actions? Are high-impact actions blocked by default?
- Kill and recovery controls: Is there an immediate stop mechanism, session expiration, rollback plan and sandbox option? Can your staff stop activity without vendor intervention?
- Human approval gates: Which actions require approval, who can grant it and how are escalations handled outside business hours?
- Graduated autonomy: Are there explicit levels such as observation, suggestion, supervised execution and restricted autonomous execution, rather than an opaque “fully autonomous” label?
- Auditability: Does the service preserve tamper-resistant logs of prompts, model decisions, tool calls, credentials used, approvals, outputs and timestamps?
- Manipulation resistance: How does it handle prompt injection, malicious documents, adversarial tool output and attempts to persuade it to ignore scope or safety rules?
- Supply-chain transparency: Which AI providers, tools, open-source components and subprocessors are used? How are model changes announced and assessed?
- Data handling and isolation: Is customer data retained for model training? How are tenants, test credentials, logs and artifacts isolated and deleted?
- Evidence quality: Does each finding include the exact reproduction sequence, affected asset, observed impact, confidence, coverage and known limitations?
What a useful report should contain
For BAS, insist on more than a green dashboard. Each scenario should identify the technique, test conditions, asset, expected prevention and detection controls, observed telemetry, alert latency where measured, response outcome and whether the result is comparable with prior runs. A pass should mean “passed under these stated conditions,” not “the environment is secure.”
For AI penetration testing, preserve the exact prompt or input sequence, conversation state, retrieved context, model and configuration version, tool arguments, resulting output, data exposed or action taken, and any required human approvals. Include a confidence statement and a coverage statement: which models, prompts, tools, data stores, user roles and attack classes were tested, and which were not.

Track remediation to closure and re-run the original case. If a model update changes the result, retain both versions so reviewers can distinguish a fixed vulnerability from a behaviour change that merely moved the failure elsewhere.
Costs, staffing and buying considerations
Authoritative guidance does not establish a neutral cross-industry price, detection rate, return on investment or universal effectiveness advantage for BAS or AI penetration testing. Avoid vendor claims that present an unqualified percentage or savings figure as a standard result.
Budget and effort are driven by the number of assets and environments, required integrations, test frequency, production restrictions, data-handling terms, human review, remediation support and the depth of attack-path analysis. A recurring BAS subscription may require engineering time for agents, allow-lists, telemetry integration and triage. A penetration test may require concentrated access to application owners, test accounts, architecture information and a remediation window. AI testing adds model inventory, prompt and dataset versioning, tool-permission review and specialist interpretation.
Compare proposals on objective, cadence, breadth and depth, realism and safety, AI coverage, evidence quality, integrations, governance and total operating effort. Ask for a sample report with sensitive details removed, a description of test isolation, and a clear list of unsupported techniques rather than relying on a product label.
Common failure modes and how to correct them

Reporting findings without reproducibility
Symptom: a screenshot or model response cannot be recreated after a provider or prompt change.
Correction: store prompts, context, versions, tool calls, timestamps and configuration with the finding, then independently repeat high-impact cases.
Ignoring control drift between annual tests
Symptom: a previously successful assessment is cited even though identity, logging or cloud configuration has changed repeatedly.
Correction: add BAS scenarios to the change workflow and trigger targeted runs after material modifications.
Examples of sensible combinations
Enterprise with stable AI use
Run recurring BAS across endpoints, identity, network and cloud controls. Perform a periodic penetration test of internet-facing applications and internal attack paths. Add AI testing when an internal assistant gains access to confidential documents or tools.
Fast-changing SaaS company
Use BAS or equivalent automated control validation after deployment and security-policy changes. Run campaign-based application tests around major releases, and test the model, RAG permissions and agent tools whenever the product’s AI workflow changes.
High-impact agent in a regulated workflow
Lead with human threat modelling and a tightly scoped penetration test in a representative environment. Require supervised autonomy, immutable logs, approval gates and rollback before any automated testing touches production. Use BAS to verify identity, endpoint and monitoring controls around the workflow.
Making the decision
Choose BAS first when your unresolved question is whether defensive controls still work across a changing environment. Choose AI penetration testing when the system’s behaviour, data access or ability to take actions creates risks that ordinary application testing cannot represent. Choose both when you need continuous control assurance and periodic discovery of new vulnerabilities or attack paths.
The strongest programme treats every result as bounded evidence: a technique passed under stated conditions, an exploit reproduced against a defined target, or an AI behaviour observed with a recorded model and configuration. That discipline lets your team compare results over time, allocate remediation effort and expand automation without surrendering safety or accountability.
