What Brave Leo is built to do
Brave describes Leo as a “smart, privacy-first AI assistant” built into the Brave browser. Its most distinctive feature is context: the assistant is available while you browse, so asking for a summary or an explanation of the page in front of you is a natural operation rather than a copy-and-paste task.
Page-aware conversations
For a long article, documentation page, product specification, or research paper, the browser integration can reduce the friction of moving text into a separate chat window. You can ask for a summary, request key claims, or ask a follow-up question about the material you are reading. The useful boundary is that Leo’s answer is only as good as the page context it receives and the model’s interpretation of that context; it should not be treated as proof that every statement on the page is correct.
Mobile and Premium access
Brave also offers Leo on mobile and has a Premium tier. Availability of models and features differs between free and Premium access, and the exact allowance can change. Check Brave’s current product and account pages for the edition available in your region before relying on a particular model or limit.
Privacy: Leo’s stated default versus ChatGPT’s controls
Privacy is the clearest documented difference, but it is not a simple “private” versus “not private” label. Leo’s public policy statement describes a no-retention, no-sharing, no-training posture for chats. ChatGPT provides settings that let an account holder decide how chats are used and retained. Those are different approaches: one emphasizes a product-level default, while the other emphasizes configurable account controls.
What Brave says about Leo
Brave’s current AI product page states: “Leo doesn’t retain or share chats, or use them for model training.” Brave’s Help Center further says that Leo models are managed and operated by Brave in secure environments, with no data sharing between Brave and the original model creators. That statement describes Brave’s handling of the Leo service; it does not make the external web pages you summarize private, and it does not remove the need to avoid sending secrets into any online service.

Brave also documents that generated responses are discarded after generation and are not used for model training. Customization and memory features store personalization information locally on the device, according to Brave’s documentation. Local storage can reduce server-side exposure, but anyone with access to the device or its profile may still be able to access locally stored data.
What ChatGPT lets you control
OpenAI’s official Data Controls documentation describes controls for model improvement, chat history, data export, account deletion, and Temporary Chat. In a personal account, open the ChatGPT settings and review the Data Controls section. Pay particular attention to the setting labeled “Improve the model for everyone,” the chat-history behavior, and the Temporary Chat option before entering sensitive information.
These controls mean that two ChatGPT users can have different privacy behavior. A personal account with model improvement enabled is not equivalent to one with it disabled, and organizational accounts may be governed by different administrative policies. Do not assume that every ChatGPT conversation has identical retention or training treatment; check the settings for the account and workspace you are actually using.
What neither policy guarantees
Neither service can verify the truth of an answer merely because a privacy policy exists. Privacy controls govern handling of your conversation data, not the accuracy of generated text, the security of a third-party website you paste into the chat, or the confidentiality obligations of your employer. For regulated, confidential, or legally privileged material, follow your organization’s approved tools and data-classification rules.
Browser context versus a standalone assistant
Leo’s advantage appears when the task starts in a browser tab. You can stay in Brave while asking for an outline of a page, a plain-language explanation, or a list of the author’s claims. This is especially convenient for reading-heavy work where the source page is the object of the question.

ChatGPT’s standalone design is more neutral about where your source material came from. You can paste an excerpt, upload or provide material through the features available to your plan, and continue a conversation without tying it to one browser tab. That separation can be useful when you are combining several sources or building a reusable project rather than interrogating one page.

Model choice and Bring Your Own Model
Brave says Leo can use multiple models and supports Bring Your Own Model, allowing a user to choose a preferred provider or endpoint. That flexibility matters if you have a technical reason to use a particular model, a self-hosted endpoint, or a provider with policies that fit your requirements. It also adds setup and compatibility questions: the model must be available to Leo, the endpoint must work with the supported interface, and the resulting privacy treatment can depend on that endpoint’s own terms.
ChatGPT exposes the models included with the account and plan you select. The practical benefit is a managed experience: you choose from the models and features shown in the product rather than connecting an external endpoint. The trade-off is less control over the underlying provider and model-routing choices than a BYOM workflow can offer.
Do not infer that one service always uses a stronger model. Availability changes, model names can differ by edition, and an answer depends on the prompt, context window, tools, and model selected for that conversation. Record the model name and date whenever you compare results.
Memory and personalization
Leo’s documentation describes customization and memory information as stored locally on the device. This can make personalization useful without creating the same kind of account-level server record, but it also means that clearing browser data, changing profiles, or moving to another device may affect what Leo remembers. The exact behavior depends on the feature and version available in your Brave installation.

ChatGPT’s personalization is tied to the account and its history or memory controls. Review those controls when you share an account, use a managed workspace, or move between personal and organizational contexts. If you need a conversation that should not become part of ordinary history, use Temporary Chat when it is available and appropriate, while still following the service’s current terms.
How to compare answer quality without fooling yourself
No authoritative head-to-head benchmark establishes a winner between Leo and ChatGPT for overall answer quality. A fair comparison therefore needs a fixed test rather than a single impressive response.
Use the same prompt and source
- Choose a small set of tasks that reflect your real work: summarize a page, extract claims with supporting quotations, draft an email, explain code, and answer a current-events question.
- Use the same source text, instructions, language, and output format in both assistants.
- Record the date, product edition, model name, and any enabled tools or browsing context.
- Run each prompt more than once if consistency matters; one response can be unusually good or bad.
- Score the outputs against criteria you can inspect: factual accuracy, completeness, citation quality, instruction following, clarity, and refusal or uncertainty behavior.
Prompts that reveal meaningful differences
- Page summary: “Summarize this page in five bullets. Separate facts stated by the author from your own inferences.”
- Claim extraction: “List every numerical claim, quote the surrounding sentence, and mark anything that cannot be verified from the supplied text.”
- Writing: “Rewrite this passage for a nontechnical reader in 150 words without adding facts.”
- Coding: “Explain this function, identify edge cases, and propose a test for each edge case. Do not claim to have executed the code.”
- Current information: “Answer using information available as of [date]. State what you cannot verify and identify the source of each time-sensitive claim.”
Leo may feel faster for page questions because the browser supplies context directly. ChatGPT may feel more convenient for a multi-source project because the conversation is not tied to one page. Those are workflow observations, not proof that either model reasons better in every domain.

For ChatGPT, compare the models and tools included in each plan, the message or compute limits, and whether the plan is personal or organizational.
Paying for one service makes sense only if its differentiator saves enough time or provides a control you actually need. A browser-heavy reader may benefit from Leo’s context integration; a user who needs a persistent, configurable assistant may get more value from the ChatGPT plan that exposes the required controls and models. Recheck the final price and limits immediately before payment.
Common failure modes and fixes
The summary misses important parts of a page
Ask Leo to identify the exact sections it used, then paste the missing passage and request a revised summary. Long pages, paywalls, dynamic content, tables, and images can limit what an assistant receives as context.
The assistant invents a citation or fact
Require a quote for every factual claim, ask it to mark unsupported statements, and verify the quoted passage yourself. Do not treat confident wording as evidence.
