There is no evidence-based universal winner among these systems. Aston Martin’s documented DBX707 Bowers & Wilkins option is a 23-speaker, 1,600-watt surround system. A representative Mercedes-Maybach Burmester High-End 4D installation publishes 31 speakers, eight seat-mounted sound transducers and 1,750 watts. Bang & Olufsen takes a different route, emphasizing vehicle-specific calibration and Acoustic Lens Technology rather than a headline speaker-and-wattage comparison. Those figures describe different cars, cabins and software environments, so they cannot by themselves predict which system will sound best to you.
The practical answer is to compare the exact vehicle and trim you can buy, then audition each with familiar music. The cabin, seat position, digital signal processing, road-noise compensation and tuning can matter as much as the hardware list.

The short answer: three different interpretations of premium in-car audio
The Aston Martin, Burmester and Bang & Olufsen systems are not three versions of the same product tested in one car. They are manufacturer-integrated systems developed around different vehicle bodies, seating layouts and electronic architectures. A fair comparison therefore has two layers: the published hardware, and the way that hardware is calibrated for a particular cabin.

Burmester’s figures below come from a representative Mercedes-Maybach High-End 4D implementation, not every Mercedes vehicle carrying a Burmester badge. The Aston Martin figures come from Aston Martin’s 22 April 2024 technical-interior release and Bowers & Wilkins’ collaboration page. The Burmester figures are from a Mercedes-Benz Media description of a representative system. Bang & Olufsen’s statements describe its automotive engineering approach, with the 180-degree dispersion figure tied specifically to the Lamborghini Urus example.
What Aston Martin’s Bowers & Wilkins DBX system is built to do
A component layout aimed at balanced coverage
Aston Martin says the DBX707 option is acoustically engineered for the DBX707 cabin. The published component list combines separate high-frequency, midrange, low-frequency and full-range drivers rather than relying on one type of speaker throughout the car. The seven Aluminium Double Dome tweeters are intended to handle treble, while seven Continuum midrange speakers cover the vocal and instrumental region. Four paper-cone woofers, four full-range speakers and a dedicated subwoofer complete the listed layout.
Bowers & Wilkins describes the same installation as using 21 amplifier channels. That matters because an amplifier channel can give the system more independent control over individual drivers or zones; it does not automatically mean that every channel is operating at full rated power at the same time. The published wattage is a system rating, not a guarantee of a particular sound-pressure level at the driver’s seat.

3D headline speakers and the DBX cabin
Aston Martin specifically calls out dedicated 3D headline speakers. In practical listening terms, overhead or elevated channels can help a processor create a sense of height rather than presenting every instrument from the doors and dashboard. The result still depends on the DSP’s calibration, the roof and glass surfaces, seat position and how the chosen recording is mixed. A 3D label is therefore a description of the architecture, not proof that every track will sound as if it is above you.
What the Aston Martin description actually promises
The company’s 2024 wording says that “Aluminium Double Dome tweeters and Continuum® midrange speakers give this 23-speaker, double amplified 1,600W surround sound system a balanced and accurate sound.” That is Aston Martin’s design claim, not an independent laboratory ranking. It is useful evidence about the intended voicing and hardware, but it should not be read as a controlled verdict against the other systems.
What Burmester High-End 4D adds beyond a conventional speaker layout
More acoustic locations, including near-ear channels
The representative Mercedes-Maybach installation publishes 31 speakers. Six are identified as 3D speakers, and four are described as near-ear speakers for the front seats. Near-ear placement can reduce the distance between a driver and a transducer, giving the processing system another way to create detail or localized effects without making the entire cabin louder. Whether that sounds natural depends on timing, equalization and the listener’s seating position.

Seat-mounted transducers are a separate sensory layer
Eight transducers are mounted in the seats. These devices are intended to transmit low-frequency energy through the seat structure, so the listener can feel some of the program rather than hearing it only through air pressure from the speakers. A transducer is not simply another conventional loudspeaker: its contribution is tactile, and its intensity and integration with the subwoofer need careful adjustment to avoid a disconnected or exaggerated sensation.

Subwoofer volume and the 4D concept
The same Mercedes-Benz Media description identifies an 18.5-litre subwoofer and two amplifiers delivering 1,750 watts in total. The subwoofer’s stated enclosure volume gives a physical reference for the low-frequency section, but enclosure size alone does not reveal extension, distortion or cabin response. Mercedes-Benz CTO Markus Schäfer described the combination this way: “With Dolby Atmos and the Burmester sound system, we offer our customers an exciting music experience in the vehicle that is almost like a live concert.” The statement explains the intended immersive experience; it is not a standardized listening measurement.
How Bang & Olufsen’s automotive approach differs
Acoustic Lens Technology instead of a universal headline number
Bang & Olufsen’s automotive material focuses on the problems that make car audio difficult: confined spaces, changing cabin acoustics and ambient noise. Its stated solution is precise engineering combined with advanced tuning. Rather than presenting one speaker count and wattage that applies to every partner vehicle, B&O emphasizes how the system is integrated and calibrated for a specific interior.
The Lamborghini Urus example identifies Acoustic Lens Technology. Its moving lens is described as providing 180-degree horizontal high-frequency dispersion. Broadening the horizontal spread of treble can help more occupants receive a consistent high-frequency balance when they are not sitting directly on the main acoustic axis. The figure belongs to that Urus implementation; it should not be generalized to every Bang & Olufsen automotive system.
Why the missing B&O numbers are not a defect in the comparison
The supplied B&O material does not state a single automotive speaker count, amplifier-channel total or power figure that can be placed beside the DBX and Maybach numbers. Different B&O partner vehicles can use different hardware, so inventing a universal specification would make the comparison less accurate. If a dealer presents a particular B&O option, ask for the specification sheet for that exact model and model year.

Why speaker count and watts cannot decide the winner
Speaker count measures complexity, not quality
More drivers can provide more places to distribute sound and more opportunities for a processor to shape the sound field. They can also make installation and calibration more complex. A 31-speaker layout in one cabin is not directly comparable with a 23-speaker layout in another because the driver types, locations, crossover points and listening distances differ.
Power ratings need context
Power figures are useful for understanding the scale of an amplifier system, but a total rating does not tell you how it was measured, how power is divided among channels, or how much clean output remains at the frequencies you care about. Cabin gain, speaker efficiency, limiter settings and DSP equalization all affect what you hear. Treat 1,600 watts and 1,750 watts as published system specifications, not as a direct loudness contest.
Cabin geometry changes imaging
Glass, leather, trim panels, roof contours and seat backs reflect and absorb different frequencies. The same recording can produce a stable center image in one vehicle and a more diffuse image in another. Driver and passenger positions are also asymmetric: the dashboard, doors and windshield are not the same distance from each occupant. Vehicle-specific tuning is intended to compensate for those differences, which is why a carefully calibrated system with fewer published drivers can be more convincing than a larger specification on paper.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRoad noise and speed alter the result
Tyre, wind and drivetrain noise mask low-level detail, especially at motorway speed. A system that sounds smooth in a parked showroom can become bass-light or treble-heavy on the road if its compensation is not well matched to the vehicle. Listen both while stationary and during a normal drive, using the same volume and source quality for every car.

A fair audition procedure for these systems
Use the following process when you can access the exact trims under consideration. It will not turn a subjective decision into a laboratory test, but it prevents the most common showroom mistakes.
- Confirm the installation. Record the vehicle model, model year, trim, body style and audio option. Do not assume that a Burmester badge represents the representative High-End 4D specification or that every B&O vehicle uses the Urus implementation.
- Use the same source. Bring familiar tracks in the highest-quality format the vehicles accept. Keep streaming service, connection method and source volume consistent. Disable phone-specific enhancements that one car might apply and another might not.
- Set a neutral starting point. Begin with the manufacturer’s default equalizer, surround and immersive settings. If one system is demonstrated with an aggressively boosted preset, note that separately rather than comparing it with another car’s flat setting.
- Check the driver’s seat and a rear seat. Listen for vocal focus, cymbal texture, bass integration and whether the center image moves when you change seats. Near-ear speakers, seat transducers and 3D channels can produce different impressions in different positions.
- Use both quiet and moving conditions. Play the same short passages while parked, then repeat them at urban and motorway speeds when safe. Pay attention to whether vocals remain intelligible and whether bass stays controlled as noise rises.
- Test low, moderate and high volume. At low volume, look for detail without harshness. At moderate volume, judge tonal balance and spatial stability. At high volume, listen for strain, rattling or bass that becomes one-note. Do not use maximum volume as a proxy for quality.
- Write down observations immediately. Describe what you hear in concrete terms—“kick drum remains separate from bass guitar” or “center vocal shifts toward the passenger seat”—rather than choosing a winner from memory after several days.
Choosing by listening priority
| Your priority | System characteristic to investigate | Question to ask during the audition |
|---|---|---|
| Clear vocals and acoustic instruments | DBX’s separate tweeter and Continuum midrange arrangement, or the partner vehicle’s equivalent calibrated layout | Does a familiar voice stay centered and natural at low volume? |
| Immersive height and enveloping effects | DBX dedicated 3D headline speakers or Burmester’s 3D channels and Dolby Atmos implementation | Do height effects remain integrated, or do they sound detached from the stage? |
| Physical low-frequency impact | Burmester’s seat-mounted transducers and 18.5-litre subwoofer | Does the tactile effect add realism without masking bass notes? |
| Consistent treble for multiple seats | Bang & Olufsen Acoustic Lens Technology, specifically where fitted | Does high-frequency detail remain balanced when you move across the cabin? |
| Specification transparency | A system with a published component and amplifier breakdown for the exact vehicle | Can the dealer provide the option’s actual speaker, channel and power data? |
These are listening priorities, not rankings. A buyer who wants tactile bass may value a different design from a buyer who mainly listens to chamber music at moderate levels. Decide which compromises you can hear and live with before treating the badge as a reason to choose the car.
Questions to put to a dealer or manufacturer
- Is the quoted system the same hardware as the documented flagship implementation, or a lower-tier option with the same brand name?
- Which seats contain dedicated near-ear speakers or tactile transducers?
- How does the system handle road-noise compensation, and can that feature be adjusted or disabled?
- Which immersive formats are supported in this exact vehicle, and are they available from the source you plan to use?
- Can you demonstrate the system with the equalizer and surround controls at their default settings?
- Are the published wattage and speaker figures recurring specifications for this model year, or do they describe a particular launch edition?
These questions are especially important for Burmester and Bang & Olufsen, where the supplied figures are tied to particular implementations rather than a universal product specification.

What is and is not proven by the available evidence
The published material establishes a clear hardware contrast: the DBX707 Bowers & Wilkins option has a defined multi-driver layout and 21-channel, 1,600-watt specification; the representative Burmester High-End 4D system adds more published speakers, seat transducers and a larger stated total power figure; and Bang & Olufsen documents a vehicle-specific tuning philosophy with a 180-degree high-frequency lens example in the Urus.
It does not establish a controlled, same-vehicle listening test, a universal ranking, frequency-response curves measured under identical conditions, distortion figures or a reliable conversion from wattage to perceived loudness. Any article or salesperson claiming that one of these brands always sounds best is going beyond those facts.
Bottom line for a vehicle purchase
Choose the car first, then the audio option that sounds best in that car from the driver’s seat. The Aston Martin DBX system is the most clearly specified of the three in the supplied material and offers a conventional premium layout with dedicated 3D channels. Burmester’s representative High-End 4D design is the most elaborate on paper, adding near-ear speakers and seat-based tactile output. Bang & Olufsen’s differentiator is its emphasis on optical dispersion and vehicle-specific calibration, with Acoustic Lens Technology providing a concrete example.
Those descriptions tell you what to audition, not what you will prefer. A careful, same-track test at several seats and speeds is more trustworthy than speaker count, wattage or brand prestige.
