Boron vs. Lithium, Rare Earths, and Other Critical Minerals: Key Differences

Boron and lithium are elements, rare earths are a group, and “critical mineral” is a U.S. policy designation tied to importance and supply risk.

Boron and lithium are individual chemical elements; rare earths are a group of elements; and “critical mineral” is a policy designation. The terms describe different things, so boron is not a rare earth, and “critical” does not simply mean geologically rare. In the United States, the 2025 critical-minerals list includes boron and lithium and identifies rare-earth members individually.

What do boron, lithium, rare earths, and critical minerals mean?

Term What it describes What sets it apart
Boron A chemical element and mineral commodity One element with uses that include hardening steel and glass and applications in nuclear energy. (USGS Boron Statistics and Information)
Lithium A chemical element and mineral commodity One element; the USGS 2026 summary identifies batteries as its application. (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026)
Rare earths A group of elements: scandium, yttrium, and the lanthanides A family, not one element or one mineral. Members have different uses and are considered individually on the U.S. critical-minerals list. (USGS Rare Earths Statistics and Information)
Critical mineral A U.S. policy designation Describes minerals considered important to the economy or national security and vulnerable to supply disruption, not a shared chemical family or synonym for “rare.” (USGS, About the 2025 List of Critical Minerals)

These labels can overlap: boron and lithium are both elements and mineral commodities, and both appear on the 2025 U.S. critical-minerals list. Rare earths are a chemical group whose members are listed individually. “Critical” answers a different question from “element” or “group”: it concerns the importance and vulnerability of a supply chain.

How do their uses differ?

Boron

The USGS lists hardening steel and glass and nuclear energy among boron’s applications. Boron is therefore not simply an energy-storage material or a substitute label for lithium.

Lithium

The USGS 2026 commodity summary identifies batteries as lithium’s application. That makes lithium’s role distinct from boron’s listed uses, even though both may be classed as critical minerals in the United States.

Rare-earth elements

Rare-earth members have varied uses. USGS examples include permanent magnets, lasers, catalysts, fiber optics, glass, ceramics, metallurgy, and medical imaging. Some are used in permanent magnets, but it is inaccurate to treat every rare earth as an interchangeable magnet ingredient.

Does “rare earth” mean these elements are scarce?

Not necessarily. The USGS overview reports crustal abundance from about 60 parts per million for cerium to about 0.5 parts per million for thulium and lutetium; the overview does not state a publication year for those figures. These are estimates of abundance in Earth’s crust, not measures of economically recoverable deposits, mine output, processing capacity, or risk of supply disruption.

  • Perfect for Learning: Designed for students, teachers, and rock hounds! Includes rocks, tools, and step-by-step guidance to explore geology principles like luster, cleavage, and mineral reactions.

Those measures should not be collapsed into a single scarcity ranking. A material can be present in the crust yet still face supply-chain vulnerabilities related to extraction, processing, trade, or disruption. The evidence does not support a universal quantitative ranking of boron, lithium, and rare earths by scarcity or supply risk.

What makes a mineral “critical” in the United States?

The designation reflects economic and national-security importance alongside vulnerability to supply disruption. It is a U.S. policy category, not a permanent scientific classification: supply chains and risks change, and the list is updated periodically.

The USGS’s final 2025 U.S. list contains 60 minerals. Of those, 50 were also on the 2022 list, and the methodology assessed more than 1,200 possible disruption scenarios. These figures describe the list and its assessment, not the abundance or production of any one mineral.

How do U.S. boron supply facts compare with the other categories?

The USGS says boron is produced domestically only in California. U.S. boron products sold on the market come from surface mines, underground mines, in situ production, and brine. The agency also identifies the United States and Turkey as the world’s largest boron producers. These statements are specific to boron; they do not establish a comparable production or import ranking for lithium or rare earths.

For up-to-date production, trade, reserves, and resources, the relevant dated reference is Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, version 1.3, revised May 27, 2026. The USGS describes it as the earliest comprehensive source for 2025 mineral-production data. It answers commodity-data questions, while the 2025 critical-minerals list addresses U.S. designation and supply-chain risk; the two sources serve related but different purposes.

A practical way to compare these materials

  • Start with classification: Is the subject one element, a group of elements, or a policy category?
  • Compare uses: Check the specific material or rare-earth member rather than assuming every member of a group has the same application.
  • Separate supply measures: Crustal abundance, mine production, processing capacity, imports, and disruption risk are different facts.
  • Check geography and date: A U.S. designation or production statement should not be generalized to every country or treated as timeless.
