How to Compare Bank Stocks: Credit Losses, Capital and Buybacks

Compare banks by looking at credit performance, capital headroom and completed shareholder distributions together—not by treating any one ratio or buyback announcement as a verdict. Use the same reporting period and definitions, then account for differences in loan mix and regulatory requirements. The framework below is for publicly traded U.S. banks; it is an analytical tool, not an automatic buy-or-sell signal.

Start with comparable periods and portfolios

Choose the same quarter or year for every bank, and distinguish holding-company figures from subsidiary-bank figures. A bank concentrated in credit cards does not have the same credit profile as one with substantial commercial real estate or commercial-and-industrial lending. Compare like loan categories where possible, and note differences in portfolio mix and reporting scope before ranking peers.

For each company, collect category-level delinquencies and net charge-offs, the allowance and its changes, CET1 and the applicable requirement, and actual repurchases, dividends and shares outstanding. Bank Holding Company Performance Reports can help readers follow allowance roll-forwards and net charge-offs by loan category; see the Federal Reserve’s BHCPR guide.

Read credit losses as a set of related measures

Credit risk is not captured by a single figure. Provision, allowance, charge-offs and delinquency data describe different things and should be read together.

#1 Best Overall
Measure What it tells you How to use it
Provision for credit losses The period expense or reversal affecting earnings as the bank adjusts its estimated credit losses. Compare changes across periods and examine the bank’s explanation; a higher provision can reflect changed expectations, not just losses already realized.
Allowance for credit losses A balance-sheet estimate of losses in the loan portfolio. The Federal Reserve describes it as a contra-asset that reduces the reported loan amount. Review it relative to relevant loan balances and read the roll-forward. It is an estimate, not a pile of cash or a guarantee against future losses.
Net charge-offs Gross losses charged against the allowance, less recoveries. Track direction by loan category and over several periods. Federal Reserve charge-off rates are annualized and net of recoveries.
Delinquencies and nonaccruals Indicators of payment performance and recognition status. Look for rising problem loans, including when recent charge-offs remain low. The Federal Reserve’s published delinquency series includes loans at least 30 days past due and still accruing interest, together with nonaccrual loans.

The Federal Reserve’s CECL materials explain that institutions can use estimation approaches suited to groups of financial assets and apply them consistently; the framework does not prescribe one method. As a result, allowance ratios reflect portfolio composition and assumptions as well as the balances being measured.

Trace the movement by loan category

Compare card, auto, commercial real estate, commercial and industrial, and other material categories separately. A portfolio-wide figure can conceal opposing trends. Ask which categories explain changes in provision, allowance, delinquencies and charge-offs, and whether allowance growth is keeping pace with loan growth or a change in risk mix.

Follow the allowance roll-forward rather than looking only at its beginning and ending balance. The Federal Reserve’s reporting guide presents opening allowance, provision, net losses, recoveries, adjustments and ending allowance. Read management’s account of whether a provision change reflects portfolio growth, credit quality, the economic outlook or model assumptions. Those explanations help interpret the numbers but do not replace comparison with reported trends.

Compare CET1 headroom over each bank’s requirement

CET1 is a regulatory capital ratio that compares core capital with risk-weighted assets. Its meaning depends on the requirement that applies to the particular firm. For covered large U.S. bank holding companies, the Federal Reserve’s 2026 large-bank capital requirements page describes a 4.5% minimum CET1 ratio, a stress capital buffer (SCB) of at least 2.5%, and a G-SIB surcharge of at least 1.0% where applicable. Requirements vary by firm, including with supervisory stress-test results and scope.

Do not compare a bank’s reported CET1 only with the 4.5% minimum or assume that the same threshold applies to every bank. For each company, identify its reported ratio and applicable requirement, then calculate:

CET1 headroom = reported CET1 ratio − applicable CET1 requirement

Compare the resulting headroom across banks and across comparable quarters. Check whether the issuer reports standardized and advanced approaches and which approach is binding. Do not apply the large-bank formula indiscriminately to smaller institutions, and verify the requirement for the firm and period being analyzed: thresholds can change.

Capital can absorb losses and constrain distributions, but a higher CET1 ratio alone does not establish better stock value. Interpret it alongside asset quality, loan mix, earnings generation and balance-sheet changes. State the period end and measurement basis, and do not mix holding-company capital with subsidiary-bank measures.

Separate buyback capacity from repurchases completed

A repurchase authorization gives a bank permission to buy shares; it does not show that the bank actually did so. Compare amounts spent and shares repurchased with changes in shares outstanding over time. Consider dividends alongside buybacks, since both are shareholder distributions, and account for capital retained for resilience, reinvestment or growth.

Buyback timing and size can change with capital, liquidity, financial performance, alternative uses of funds, share price, regulation and market conditions. Bank of America’s 2025 Form 10-K describes these considerations and says repurchases may be suspended or discontinued; the filing is available through the SEC. Treat that as the company’s stated policy, not a rule for every bank.

Ask whether completed repurchases make sense given the bank’s capital position and the price paid, but do not claim they created value without valuation evidence. Wells Fargo’s 2Q 2026 earnings presentation places provisions, net charge-offs, allowance, CET1 and capital-return information together, illustrating why repurchases belong in the wider credit and capital picture; its figures are specific to that period and issuer, not a peer benchmark. See the SEC-filed presentation.

Use a consistent comparison checklist

  • Use the same reporting period and definitions for each bank.
  • Compare delinquencies and net charge-offs by loan category, not just in aggregate.
  • Review the allowance relative to relevant loans and trace its roll-forward.
  • Calculate CET1 headroom over the applicable firm-specific requirement, including relevant buffers and surcharges.
  • Distinguish completed repurchases from authorization capacity; compare repurchased shares, shares outstanding and dividends.
  • Record material differences in loan mix, accounting estimates, reporting scope and capital requirements before drawing a conclusion.

The Federal Reserve’s charge-off and delinquency release defines the measures used in its published series. Those definitions help keep comparisons consistent, but an industry statistic should not substitute for issuer-level data.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you

This framework helps explain how credit trends, capital resilience and distributions fit together. It does not identify the best bank stock, calculate intrinsic value or account for an individual investor’s risk tolerance. The cited regulatory definitions and requirements are U.S.-focused; do not assume they apply to banks in other countries.
