Wait until your water runs clear, then treat the marks with a rust remover labeled for laundry or recommended for fabric, following its directions. Avoid chlorine bleach: it can make rust-like discoloration worse.
What to do first
- Stop the wash. Do not keep washing clothes in visibly discolored water. If the cycle has finished, take the affected items out of the drying process.
- Keep the laundry wet. Leave the items wet while you wait for clear water; do not heat-dry them before treatment. Heat can make a stain harder to remove. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power likewise advises: “Remove the laundry from the machine and keep it wet.”
- Do not apply chlorine bleach. The American Cleaning Institute warns that sodium hypochlorite bleach “may intensify discoloration,” and LADWP cautions that bleach reacting with iron can cause a permanent stain. Avoid bleach on suspected rust stains.
- Wait for clear water. Follow your water utility’s directions for clearing discolored water before rinsing or rewashing laundry. The right procedure and timing depend on the local system.
How to treat the stained clothes
Use a fabric-safe rust remover
Check the garment’s care label, then choose a product specifically labeled for laundry or recommended for fabric. Follow its package directions, including how long to leave it on and how to rinse and rewash. A purpose-made fabric rust remover is the targeted option; ordinary detergent may be used for the rewash if the garment and product directions allow it.

Do not assume a rust remover intended for sinks, tools, or other hard surfaces is safe on clothing. If a stain remains, check the product and care-label instructions again rather than escalating to an unverified household chemical. For delicate or non-washable garments, seek garment-care advice.
Consider the small-stain method described by Michigan
Michigan’s government laundry guidance describes applying lemon juice and salt to a small stain repeatedly, keeping the area wet between applications, and rinsing thoroughly. This is an alternative in that guidance, not a proven guarantee of removal. Check the care label first, and do not heat-dry the item unless the stain is gone.

Clear the water before washing again
Do not use a single flushing time as a rule for every city. Utility advice is local: Milwaukee Water Works says household flushing should make the water clear after 10 minutes and advises contacting its control center if discoloration remains after 30 minutes. Milwaukee’s guidance is not a universal timetable.
Columbus, Ohio, says rusty-water events normally dissipate in 4–6 hours, though they may last longer depending on water usage, and advises contacting its distribution group if an event continues beyond 24 hours. Those figures apply to Columbus guidance, not necessarily to another utility. Check your own water provider’s instructions for how to flush taps and when to report persistent discoloration.

Why a flush can leave orange or brown marks
Unusual water flow during a water-main break, hydrant use, or flushing can stir iron-bearing deposits and temporarily discolor water. Iron or manganese in the supply can also cause yellow or brown rust-like laundry stains. Rusty pipes or a water heater are other possible sources. Color alone cannot confirm which metal or source caused the marks.

If the discoloration returns, notice which taps are affected and whether it occurs in cold water, hot water, or both. A sudden change affecting multiple fixtures, particularly cold taps, fits a main-disturbance pattern described by LADWP and the City of Canton. A recurring issue after water has stood, a problem limited to one or a few fixtures, or discoloration only in hot water can point instead to household plumbing or the water heater. Contact the utility or a qualified plumber as appropriate.

What to expect from stain removal
There is no established success rate or standard number of washes that guarantees removal. Michigan’s laundry guidance notes that a rust stain may be permanent. Treating the item while it is still wet and following a fabric-safe product’s directions are sensible next steps, but complete removal cannot be promised.
