It is recovered from borate minerals and brines, then processed into products such as borax, boric acid and boron oxide. Because economically important deposits and refining capacity are concentrated in a small number of places, the path from ore to a specified industrial product matters as much as the amount of mineral underground.
Where boron comes from
Commercial boron begins in borate-bearing minerals or brines. Borates are not distributed evenly around the world: major economically viable deposits occur in California’s Mojave Desert, Turkey, the Andean belt of South America and parts of southern Asia. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) associates borate deposits with volcanic activity and arid climates.

The USGS identifies the United States and Turkey as the world’s largest boron producers. In the United States, production is located only in California. The USGS also notes that differences in the forms of boron produced make some country-to-country production comparisons difficult.
Turkey’s main deposits
The USGS’s Turkey country report identifies Emet, with colemanite, ulexite and probertite; Kirka, with tincal; and Bigadic, with colemanite and ulexite. Its 2024 reserve distribution assigns 56% of Turkey’s reported boron reserves to Emet, 25% to Kirka and 19% to Bigadic. These are shares of Turkey’s reserves, not shares of production or of global reserves.

How a deposit becomes a usable product
The supply chain runs from deposit and mineralogy through extraction, processing, product specification and delivery to a customer. Each stage affects what can be sold: two materials both described broadly as “boron” need not have the same chemistry, grade or industrial use.
- Extract the feedstock. Depending on the deposit, production can use surface mining, underground mining, in situ methods or brine. USGS identifies all of these as sources of U.S. boron products.
- Process the ore or brine. Beneficiation and refining separate and prepare borates. The ore’s mineralogy influences which products a facility can make.
- Meet a product specification. Refined outputs include borax, boric acid, boron oxide and specialty borates. Buyers may require a particular composition, grade, impurity level or physical form. Products are often compared on a boron-oxide basis; sodium or calcium content also matters.
- Ship to a customer. Producers sell domestically or export. Mine and refinery locations, transport routes and customer qualification requirements all shape the supply option available to a buyer.
Why borax is not the same thing as boron
Borax is a refined borate product, not elemental boron. The USGS identifies borax as sodium tetraborate decahydrate and says it occurs naturally as the mineral tincal. Retail “borax powder” is therefore a useful example of a downstream product, but it does not represent mine output, industrial specifications or every use of boron.

Eti Maden lists borax pentahydrate and decahydrate, boric acid, Etidot-67, boron oxide, zinc borate, calcined tincal, anhydrous borax, ground colemanite and ground ulexite among its products. The range illustrates why refined products should not be treated as interchangeable simply because they contain boron.

Production, reserves, company sales and market share describe different parts of the supply chain. The figures below come from the USGS’s 2026 Turkey country report and refer to 2024 unless otherwise specified.

The USGS report says Eti Maden’s 2024 exports went primarily to Asia, Europe and the Americas: 63% to Asia, 20% to Europe and 16% to the Americas. These rounded destination shares describe Eti Maden’s exports, not the distribution of all global borate trade.
The measures in the table should not be combined as if they had the same basis. Run-of-mine tonnes are not refined tonnes, and company sales are not a country’s production total. Likewise, reserve shares are not production shares. These distinctions are particularly important because the USGS cautions that boron’s varying forms complicate some production comparisons.

Why concentrated supply matters
A country can have substantial ore without producing every refined grade or product that customers need. Supply therefore depends not only on deposits, but also on processing capacity, product specifications, logistics and the ability of a customer to qualify an alternative material.

The market is concentrated. The USGS describes Eti Maden as Turkey’s sole boron producer in 2024 and reports its 61% share of the global refined-borate market. Rio Tinto describes a large California operation and says it supplies approximately 30% of global refined-borate demand; that is the company’s own undated estimate. The two percentages are company- or source-attributed claims with different wording and should not be added or directly compared as though they were measured on an identical basis.

Concentration makes disruptions, transport constraints or changes in refining availability relevant to downstream buyers. It does not, by itself, prove that a shortage exists or predict a price movement. A practical comparison of supply options should consider:
- Material chemistry: whether the product is derived from tincal, colemanite or ulexite, or is boric acid, boron oxide or a specialty borate.
- Grade and specification: composition, impurities, physical form and customer qualification requirements.
- Supply stage: mine output, refined capacity and actual sales are different measures.
- Geography and logistics: mine and refinery locations, export routes and destination markets.
- Producer and ownership: who controls production and whether supply is concentrated among a few companies.
- Evidence basis: the year and whether a figure represents reserves, run-of-mine production, refined output, sales or market share.
What industries use borates?
Rio Tinto’s applications overview lists borates in glass and fiberglass, ceramics, flame retardants, wood protection, detergents, fertilizers, nuclear energy, batteries and capacitors. These uses span both materials and process industries. The list is not a ranking by market size, and a particular boron product is not necessarily suitable for every application.
Product choice depends on the job to be done. A buyer evaluating borates for glass, cleaning products or a specialty industrial process needs to match the material’s specification to the process rather than assume that one borate can substitute for another.

Recent U.S. processing development
The USGS’s 2025 Mineral Commodity Summaries reported that a California facility began producing boric acid in April 2024 and was expected to focus on specialty products relevant to defense, electric transportation, food security and decarbonization. That report describes the development and expected focus at the time; it is not confirmation of the facility’s current operating status.
