Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose BOOX if you need Android apps or broad document flexibility on a specific supported model; choose Kobo if you want a dedicated e-reader built around Kobo’s store and model-specific reading features. Neither brand is universally better. Compare the exact devices you might buy, especially if you need handwriting, color, library lending, buttons, or water resistance.
What is the main difference between BOOX and Kobo?
BOOX’s clearest distinction is app flexibility on supported devices. For example, the BOOX Go 7 runs Android 13 and its product page specifies Google Play and third-party app installation. That can make it worth investigating if you want to use apps beyond a device’s built-in bookstore. App support and Android versions differ by model, so verify the specifications of the BOOX you are considering (ONYX BOOX Go 7; ONYX BOOX product index).

Kobo offers a dedicated e-reader lineup with Kobo services and features that vary by model. Its current U.S. listing includes compact black-and-white and color readers, a larger color reader, and a large-format note-taking model. Treat these as distinct devices, not as one uniform set of features (Rakuten Kobo U.S. eReaders).

Which one fits the way you read?
Choose a BOOX model to investigate if you need apps or varied document formats
BOOX’s Android app support may suit readers who want to install third-party reading or productivity apps. The BOOX Page, for example, runs Android 11 and its official format list includes EPUB, PDF, MOBI, DJVU, CBZ, and CBR. That is a model-specific example, not a guarantee that every BOOX device handles every format the same way. Check whether your chosen model supports the file types and apps you rely on (ONYX BOOX Page).

App flexibility does not establish that every third-party service works equally well on every BOOX model. If a particular app is essential, confirm compatibility for that device rather than assuming the brand’s Android-based approach guarantees it.
Choose a Kobo model to investigate if you want a dedicated reader and Kobo features
Kobo’s lineup makes it easier to choose by screen type and size: its U.S. range includes 6-inch Clara models, a 7-inch Libra Colour, an 8-inch Sage, and a 10.3-inch Elipsa 2E. Kobo describes broad ebook-format support, but the cited product listing does not enumerate every format or DRM case. Check the format and content restrictions for the files you plan to use (Rakuten Kobo U.S. eReaders).

Does a color e-reader make every page colorful?
No. A color e-paper display can show color content, but it does not automatically add color to a black-and-white page or book. The displayed result depends on the content itself (Kobo: About the colour screen).
Can you borrow library books on Kobo?
Kobo’s 2026 buying guide says the readers it covers support local library lending through Libby when a library uses OverDrive. Availability depends on your region and library’s service setup, so check with your library before choosing a device for borrowing (Kobo’s 2026 eReader buying guide).

- Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
- Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays. If the buyers are not satisfied, they can apply for return or exchange, but it cannot be regarded as a malfunction.

Quick Recap
How to choose between the two
- List what you read. Note whether you mainly read purchased ebooks, borrow library books, read PDFs or comics, open web content, or work with documents.
- Identify must-have features. Decide whether you need non-store apps, handwriting, a color display, page-turn buttons, water resistance, or a compact size.
- Shortlist exact models. Compare screen size, software, supported formats, stylus compatibility, controls, and any accessory included in the package—not just the brand name.
- Confirm service and accessory details. Check your library’s Libby/OverDrive availability and verify whether the stylus or other accessory you need is included or sold separately.
- Compare current local prices. Prices are regional and can change; use the current listing for the models you have shortlisted.
