Connect your WD Elements drive to your computer with its USB cable; if it is a desktop model, connect its power adapter too. Many WD external drives are pre-formatted and ready to use, so you can usually start copying files without formatting. If you do format it, first choose a file system for the computers you use and copy off anything you need: formatting erases the drive.
Connect the right WD Elements model
WD Elements drives include portable and desktop models, and their power requirements differ. Check the drive label and the documentation supplied with your exact model before connecting it. WD’s portable quick-install guide shows a USB connection to the computer; the desktop guide also shows a power adapter. WD says portable drives do not need a separate adapter in its power troubleshooting guidance.

- Place the drive on a stable surface.
- Connect the supplied USB cable to the drive and computer.
- If your model is a desktop drive, connect its power adapter.
- On Windows, check File Explorer; on macOS, check Finder. The displayed name and whether the drive can be used depend on its format and your operating system.
WD describes external drives as generally pre-formatted and ready for use. If the drive appears and works with the computer you intend to use, you do not need to format it just because it is new. WD’s formatting guidance explains the available choices.
Choose a file system for your computers
Pick a format based on where you need to read and write files. WD’s compatibility and format guidance identifies these options:
#1 Best Overall
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
| Where you will use the drive | Suitable format | Compatibility described by WD |
|---|---|---|
| Windows only | NTFS | Read and write on Windows; WD recommends NTFS for Windows quick formatting. |
| Mac only | APFS or HFS+ (Mac OS Extended, Journaled) | Read and write on macOS. WD says APFS is supported on macOS High Sierra 10.13 and later. |
| Both Windows and macOS | exFAT | Read and write on both systems. |
WD’s guidance describes NTFS as read-only on macOS and says Windows does not see a Mac-formatted HFS+ drive. If the drive already contains files, check its current format and confirm the computers that need access before changing anything.
Format the drive only if necessary
Formatting erases the selected drive. Copy needed files somewhere else first, and verify the selected disk before you proceed. Formatting may be useful if the existing file system is incompatible with your computer or you are deliberately preparing the drive for shared Windows/macOS use.

- High-capacity add-on storage.Compatibility : Windows 10 plus, Reformatting required for use with MacOS.
- Fast data transfers
- Plug-and-play ready for Windows PCs
- WD quality inside and out
WD’s current instructions use File Explorer for a quick Windows format, Disk Management for its longer Windows procedure, and Disk Utility on macOS. For an exFAT drive shared by Windows and Mac, WD describes using Disk Management or Disk Utility. The exact menu labels can differ by operating-system version; follow WD’s current instructions for your system rather than guessing at a menu path.
Copy files and eject before unplugging
Once the drive mounts, use File Explorer or Finder to copy or move files as you would with another storage device. Wait for transfers to finish before disconnecting it.
Rank #3
- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- Windows: Use Safely Remove Hardware and wait for the safe-to-remove message before unplugging the drive.
- macOS: Eject the drive in Finder and disconnect it after it disappears or is shown as ejected.
WD warns that removing an external drive without safely ejecting it may result in data loss. See WD’s safe-ejection instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the drive does not appear
- Check that the USB cable is firmly connected at both ends and connect it directly to the computer.
- If it is a desktop model, confirm that its power adapter is connected.
- Check Disk Management on Windows or Disk Utility on macOS to see whether the computer detects the drive outside the file browser.
- If it is detected there but not in File Explorer or Finder, do not initialize, erase, or format it unless you have confirmed that it contains no files you need. Those actions can destroy data.
- Use WD Elements product support and its external-drive troubleshooting resources for the exact model and operating system. WD’s support index includes Windows installation help and guidance for the macOS “The disk attached was not readable by this computer” message.
There is no single established cause for every recognition problem; the appropriate next step depends on what the computer reports and the drive’s history. WD Drive Utilities includes functions such as diagnostics and erase/format for supported drives, but compatibility is model-specific. Check the supported-drive list for your exact model before relying on the utility; do not assume every WD Elements drive is supported.
