Bluetooth vs. Wi-Fi Direct for Sharing Files Between PCs

Bluetooth is convenient for small nearby file transfers; Wi-Fi-based sharing is the better direction for large files. Learn how Windows Bluetooth transfer differs from Wi-Fi Direct and Nearby sharing.

For a small file between nearby, compatible devices, Windows Bluetooth file transfer is straightforward and works without internet. For a large file, choose a supported Wi-Fi-based sharing option when available: Microsoft describes Bluetooth as much slower than Wi-Fi. One important distinction: Windows Nearby sharing can use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, but its Wi-Fi option is not necessarily Wi-Fi Direct.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct and Nearby sharing are different things

Bluetooth file transfer is a Windows workflow for sending files between paired nearby devices. Wi-Fi Direct is a peer-to-peer connection technology: it lets devices connect without a wireless access point, but it is not by itself a universal Windows file-transfer button. An app or feature must use that connection to move files. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi Direct documentation describes how desktop apps pair devices through Windows and then start a Wi-Fi Direct session.

Windows Nearby sharing is a separate, user-facing feature. Microsoft’s current directions describe it as using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, depending on conditions. For the latest Windows 11 instructions, Wi-Fi sharing is available when both PCs are connected to the same private Wi-Fi network; otherwise the feature uses Bluetooth. That product guidance does not establish that every Nearby sharing Wi-Fi transfer uses Wi-Fi Direct. See Microsoft’s Nearby sharing instructions.

Which should you use?

What matters Bluetooth file transfer Wi-Fi-based sharing
Best fit Small, nearby transfers when both devices support Bluetooth file receiving. Larger transfers when a supported Wi-Fi sharing path is available.
Connection Pair devices; no internet connection is required. Wi-Fi Direct can connect devices without an access point. The documented Windows 11 Nearby sharing Wi-Fi path requires both PCs on the same private Wi-Fi network.
How files are sent Windows provides a Bluetooth file-transfer flow. Wi-Fi Direct needs an app or feature that uses it; Nearby sharing is a separate Windows feature that can choose Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
Speed evidence Microsoft says Bluetooth is much slower than Wi-Fi. Microsoft recommends Wi-Fi for faster transfers of large files. Its cited guidance gives no measured throughput or guaranteed transfer time.
Device scope Microsoft says recipients need not be Windows devices; it gives Android and iOS as examples, with receiving steps varying by device. The documented Nearby sharing flow is for supported Windows PCs.

The speed comparison is qualitative, not a benchmark. Actual transfer time depends on the devices, radios, drivers, distance, interference, file size and network setup; the cited Microsoft guidance does not provide a numeric rate or controlled comparison. Microsoft’s Nearby sharing troubleshooting guidance recommends Wi-Fi for faster large-file transfers and keeping devices within about 30 feet (10 meters) for best operation, particularly over Bluetooth.

Send a file over Bluetooth in Windows 11

  1. Pair the PCs. In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and pair the sender and receiver. Keep Bluetooth enabled on both.
  2. Put the receiving PC in receive mode. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Send or receive files via Bluetooth, then choose Receive files. Leave the receiving dialog ready while sending.
  3. Start the transfer on the sending PC. Open the same Bluetooth file-transfer command, choose Send files, select the paired recipient and follow the prompts to choose the file.
  4. Accept or save the file. Complete any prompt on the receiving device. Non-Windows recipients may use different receiving steps.

Microsoft’s Bluetooth file-transfer instructions note that Bluetooth sharing does not need cables or an internet connection. If the Bluetooth transfer command is absent, Microsoft says the PC may not have a Bluetooth adapter or its driver.

Use Nearby sharing between Windows PCs

  1. Enable Nearby sharing on both PCs. Open Settings > System > Nearby sharing and turn it on. Choose who can share with the PC; the available visibility choice affects who can send you a sharing request.
  2. Check the Wi-Fi condition if you want the Wi-Fi path. In Microsoft’s current Windows 11 instructions, both PCs need to be connected to the same private Wi-Fi network. If that condition is not met, Nearby sharing uses Bluetooth.
  3. Share the file. On the sending PC, select the file, use Share, and choose the receiving PC when it appears.
  4. Accept the transfer. On the receiving PC, accept the incoming notification and complete the save prompt.

These steps describe Nearby sharing, not a general Wi-Fi Direct file-transfer interface. For Wi-Fi Direct through another desktop app, setup and file-sending steps depend on that app.

If a transfer does not work

  • Check support and radios. Confirm both devices support the chosen sharing method and that Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is enabled. Microsoft’s Nearby sharing troubleshooting guidance lists Bluetooth 4.0 or later with Low Energy support among its requirements.
  • Check visibility and readiness. Make sure the receiver is discoverable for the sharing method in use. For Bluetooth file transfer, explicitly put the receiving PC in Receive files mode.
  • Verify the network for Nearby sharing over Wi-Fi. For the documented Windows 11 Wi-Fi route, connect both PCs to the same private Wi-Fi network. Do not assume that being connected to different networks, or merely having internet access, meets this condition.
  • Update or verify radio drivers. If Bluetooth file-transfer controls are missing, check whether a Bluetooth adapter is present and whether its driver is installed. For Nearby sharing failures, Microsoft also recommends checking Wi-Fi drivers.
  • Check discovery, distance and power state. Review network discovery, keep the PCs within about 30 feet (10 meters) for best Nearby sharing operation, and make sure power or sleep settings are not interrupting the transfer.
  • Consider firewall interference. Microsoft lists firewall conditions as a possible Nearby sharing issue; check the applicable Windows firewall settings if the other checks do not resolve it.

Windows 10 support caveat

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its sharing guidance still describes Nearby sharing for supported Windows 10 versions, but that does not change the operating system’s end-of-support status. A PC continuing to offer a feature is not, by itself, evidence that the operating system continues to receive security support. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice has the date and support details.
