For the standard models in the manufacturers’ cited specifications, the Samsung T7 and SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD tie on headline speed: each claims sequential reads of up to 1,050 MB/s and writes of up to 1,000 MB/s. The standard SanDisk Extreme is the clearer choice for travel or outdoor use because its datasheet specifies IP65 water and dust resistance and drop protection up to 3 m; Samsung specifies up to 2 m for the T7 and gives no IP rating in the cited specification. For everyday desk storage, compare the exact capacity, current price, device compatibility and security workflow instead.

Which drive should you choose?
Choose the standard SanDisk Extreme for more rugged carry
If the drive will travel in a bag, work outdoors or face occasional spills and dust, the standard SanDisk Extreme has the more useful documented protection: IP65 resistance and drop protection up to 3 m. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a promise that the SSD is indestructible; protect it from damage and check the warranty terms where you live.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose the Samsung T7 for everyday storage when it fits your setup
For desk use, routine file transfers or backups, the T7 may be the better fit if its price at your chosen capacity is lower or you prefer its password-protection setup. Samsung lists Windows, macOS and Android compatibility, but compatibility depends on the host device, port, operating system, apps and filesystem. Check that your intended device supports external storage and the format you plan to use.
#1 Best Overall
- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Do not pick on speed alone without identifying the SanDisk generation
The standard SanDisk Extreme datasheet and Samsung T7 specifications both claim up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write. A separate SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD datasheet advertises up to 2,000 MB/s, while also listing IP65 and up to 3 m drop protection. The Extreme name therefore does not identify one universal speed specification. Before relying on a speed claim, match the listing to its exact model number, interface and capacity.
What the speed claims mean in practice
“Up to” describes a manufacturer maximum, not a sustained transfer rate you should expect in every situation. Samsung says its T7 maximum is measured to its internal test standards using the enclosed cable; the stated result also depends on system environment and supported UASP. The host port, filesystem, workload, drive capacity, cable and system conditions can all affect actual performance. Neither manufacturer’s headline figure establishes which drive will be faster for your particular files or device.

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
If you are connecting the SSD to a phone or camera, verify that the device supports external storage and can handle the files and workflow you need. SanDisk’s standard datasheet describes compatibility with a range of USB-C smartphones, not a guarantee for every phone. Samsung lists Android compatibility, but that too is not a blanket guarantee for every model or app.

Security, warranty and capacity considerations
Password protection
Samsung describes the T7 as using AES 256-bit hardware encryption with optional password protection. SanDisk’s standard Extreme datasheet describes hardware encryption and password protection. The cited materials do not establish that their setup or recovery workflows are identical; choose the approach that suits your devices and how you manage passwords.

Warranty terms vary by region and SKU
The cited manufacturer materials state a three-year limited warranty for the T7 and five years for the standard SanDisk Extreme. Warranty eligibility and terms can vary with geography and the exact product SKU, so check the current regional warranty terms before buying.
Match capacity before comparing prices
The cited Samsung materials list 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB T7 capacities; the standard SanDisk Extreme datasheet also lists 500 GB. Compare current prices for the same capacity and confirm that the listing is for the generation you intend to buy. No value winner can be named without current, like-for-like prices.

Verdict
For rugged travel, the standard SanDisk Extreme is the better-supported choice on the specifications cited here: it lists IP65 resistance and up to 3 m drop protection. For ordinary storage, the T7 and that standard Extreme generation are tied on advertised sequential speeds, so choose based on the exact model, device compatibility, capacity, security preference and current price. If a listing claims the Extreme reaches 2,000 MB/s, verify its precise generation and SKU rather than assuming that figure applies to every SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD.
