If Windows 10 cannot find your headset, mouse, keyboard, speaker or another Bluetooth accessory, start with the accessory itself: turn it on, charge it, put it into pairing mode and move it close to the PC. Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: “Your Bluetooth device must be in pairing mode and within range of your PC.” Then check the Windows pairing path, run the built-in Get Help troubleshooter, and inspect the Bluetooth adapter and driver. A missing or grayed-out Bluetooth switch usually indicates an adapter, driver, firmware, Airplane mode or hardware problem rather than a simple pairing mistake.
Use the sequence below in order. It separates an accessory that is not discoverable from a Windows radio that is missing, disabled or malfunctioning, so you do not replace hardware unnecessarily.

Identify what “not detecting” means
Different symptoms point to different fixes. Note which one you have before changing settings:
- The Bluetooth switch is visible and on, but your accessory is absent from the device list. The accessory is usually off, undercharged, not discoverable or out of range.
- The accessory appears, but pairing fails or it will not reconnect. Remove its old Windows entry and pair it again; a stale pairing record is often the immediate problem.
- The Bluetooth switch is missing or grayed out. Windows may not be detecting the adapter. Investigate Airplane mode, Device Manager, drivers, firmware and hardware.
- Bluetooth is absent from Device Manager. The internal radio may be disabled in firmware, disconnected, failed or not present in the PC. A USB adapter can provide a replacement radio.
Check the accessory before changing Windows
Power and battery
Switch the accessory on and charge it. A low battery can prevent a headset, mouse, keyboard or speaker from entering pairing mode even when its indicator light still works. If it has a removable battery, install a known-good one.

Pairing or discoverable mode
Put the accessory into its dedicated pairing mode according to its manual. Simply turning it on is not always enough. Many devices require holding a Bluetooth or power button until an indicator flashes. If the device is already connected to a phone, tablet or another computer, disconnect it there or disable Bluetooth on that host while you pair with Windows.
Range and interference
Place the accessory close to the PC during setup. Microsoft requires the device to be both discoverable and within range. After pairing succeeds, you can move it to its normal position. Keep the first attempt away from metal enclosures and other sources of radio interference.
Test the accessory elsewhere
If another phone or computer can discover the accessory while your Windows 10 PC cannot, the PC is the more likely source of the problem. If no device can discover it after charging and entering pairing mode, consult the accessory’s reset or replacement instructions instead of repeatedly reinstalling Windows drivers.

Use the correct Windows 10 pairing path
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on. If the switch is unavailable, skip to the adapter section below.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device, choose Bluetooth, and wait while Windows searches for currently discoverable devices.
- Select the accessory’s name and complete any PIN or confirmation prompt shown on the PC and the accessory.
Windows lists devices that are discoverable at that moment. If your accessory does not appear, return it to pairing mode and repeat the search with it close to the PC. If it is listed under Bluetooth but will not connect, select the entry, choose Remove device, restart the accessory, put it back into pairing mode and add it again through the same path.
Run Microsoft’s built-in Bluetooth troubleshooter
Windows 10’s recommended first diagnostic is in the Get Help app:
- Open Get Help from the Start menu.
- Search for Bluetooth troubleshooter.
- Follow the automated checks and apply any repair that Get Help offers.
- Retry Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device.
The troubleshooter can reveal that Bluetooth is disabled, that Windows cannot communicate with the adapter, or that a related setting needs attention. It does not prove that the accessory itself is healthy, so keep the power, pairing-mode and range checks in place.

When the Bluetooth switch is missing or grayed out
Check Airplane mode and perform a complete power cycle
Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Airplane mode and make sure Airplane mode is off. If the radio appears stuck, shut the PC down completely, wait briefly, then power it on again rather than only selecting Restart. A full power cycle can reinitialize a radio that did not resume correctly from sleep.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth. Look for the internal adapter and check for a yellow warning icon.
- If the adapter is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device.
- If Bluetooth is not listed, use View > Show hidden devices, then check Network adapters and any category supplied by your PC maker.
An adapter that appears without a warning icon means Windows can at least enumerate the hardware; the remaining issue may be pairing, the driver, the service or the accessory. A missing adapter points more strongly to a disabled, failed or absent radio.
Check Windows Update and Optional updates
Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, install available updates and select View optional updates when that link is present. Optional driver updates can include a Bluetooth package that Windows does not install automatically.

Repair, reinstall or roll back the Bluetooth driver
Update automatically
- In Device Manager, right-click the Bluetooth adapter and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test discovery again.
If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed but Bluetooth still fails, check the support page for your exact PC model. The manufacturer may publish a newer Windows 10 Bluetooth driver or a related firmware, BIOS or UEFI update. Use the manufacturer’s page or Windows Update; do not install a driver from an unofficial download site.
Uninstall and let Windows reinstall
- Right-click the adapter in Device Manager and choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. If Windows offers a box to remove the driver package, leave it cleared unless the PC manufacturer specifically instructs otherwise.
- Restart the PC. Windows should detect the adapter and reinstall its driver.
- Return to the Bluetooth settings page and try pairing again.
Roll back after a recent update
If detection stopped immediately after a driver or Windows update, open the adapter’s Properties > Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when the button is available. A disabled button means Windows has no previous package stored; use the current Windows Update or manufacturer package instead. Do not roll back merely because the driver has a newer date—the timing of the failure is the deciding evidence.
Check the Bluetooth service and power settings
Restart Bluetooth Support Service
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Bluetooth Support Service.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. If it is stopped, choose Start.
- Open Properties and set Startup type to Automatic if your organization’s policy allows it.
Try discovery again after the service starts. If it repeatedly stops, note the exact error shown in Services and check the adapter driver and Windows Event Viewer rather than repeatedly pairing the accessory.

- Select the Power Management tab.
- Clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Choose OK, restart Windows and test the connection.
This setting is particularly relevant when Bluetooth works after boot but disappears after sleep or intermittently loses a mouse, keyboard or headset.

Use a USB Bluetooth adapter when the internal radio is absent or faulty
A USB Bluetooth adapter is a direct hardware remedy for a desktop or laptop with no working built-in adapter. Microsoft confirms that a USB adapter can add Bluetooth to a Windows computer. Before buying one, verify three things in the listing:
- It explicitly supports Windows 10, not only a newer Windows release.
- Its Bluetooth version meets the needs of your accessory.
- It supports the Bluetooth profiles required by that accessory, such as the profile used by a mouse, keyboard, headset or speaker.
Plug the adapter into a working USB port, allow Windows Update to install its driver when offered, and then repeat the standard pairing path. If an internal adapter remains enabled, two radios can create confusion; use Device Manager to disable the failed internal device if the adapter manufacturer’s instructions call for it.

Windows 10 support status matters in 2026
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The operating system may continue to run, but current driver and security support is more limited than on a supported Windows release. That matters when a PC maker stops publishing new Windows 10 Bluetooth packages or when a recent accessory expects a newer operating system. If your hardware supports it, moving to a supported Windows release can restore access to current drivers; otherwise, use the newest Windows 10 driver explicitly provided for your exact PC model and avoid random third-party packages.
A practical order of operations
- Charge and power on the accessory.
- Put it into discoverable or pairing mode and move it close to the PC.
- Turn off Airplane mode.
- Pair through Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth.
- If the accessory is listed but will not connect, remove it and add it again.
- Run Get Help > Bluetooth troubleshooter.
- Inspect Device Manager, Windows Update and Optional updates.
- Update, reinstall or roll back the adapter driver based on when the failure began.
- Restart Bluetooth Support Service and disable adapter power-off in the Power Management tab.
- If no adapter is present or the internal one has failed, install a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter.
Stop before buying hardware if the adapter appears normally in Device Manager and another accessory can pair successfully; that pattern points to the original accessory or its pairing state. Conversely, if the switch remains missing and the adapter never appears after driver and firmware checks, software pairing steps cannot restore a physically absent or failed radio.
