Bluetooth audio codecs explained: what Windows and your headphones actually support

Windows and a headset must support the same codec. Windows chooses the first codec in its A2DP list that both the PC’s Bluetooth host and the headphones advertise; SBC is the required fallback. Your Windows version, Bluetooth radio, drivers and headphone model therefore matter more than a codec name printed on a transmitter box.

Windows 11 includes SBC, AAC and aptX Classic from version 21H2. aptX Adaptive (lossless) is documented only for Windows 11 version 24H2 on selected devices with compatible Qualcomm radios. LDAC and aptX HD are not listed as native Windows codecs, so they require a compatible external transmitter—and headphones that implement the same codec.

What a Bluetooth codec does

A Bluetooth codec compresses audio for wireless transmission and decodes it at the headphones. It is only one part of the connection: Bluetooth profiles determine whether the link is being used for stereo playback, microphone capture or newer LE Audio features.

For Classic Audio stereo playback, Windows uses the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP). Microsoft states that A2DP requires both the audio device and Bluetooth host to support SBC. SBC is therefore the common safety net, not an optional extra.

When several codecs are available, Windows starts at the top of its documented list and chooses the first codec supported by both ends. The result is an intersection of capabilities, not a guarantee that the transmitter’s “best” codec will be used. A headset that lacks aptX cannot be made aptX-compatible by a PC adapter that advertises aptX.

Windows codec support by version

Microsoft’s support table describes capabilities of the Windows audio stack. It does not guarantee that every computer exposes every codec: the Bluetooth radio chipset, firmware, manufacturer driver package and headset still have to cooperate.

Windows release Codecs listed by Microsoft What that means
Windows 10, version 1507 and later SBC, aptX Classic AAC is listed as not supported by the Windows Classic Audio stack.
Windows 11, version 21H2 and later SBC, aptX Classic, AAC These are the documented Classic Audio capabilities, subject to the PC radio, drivers and headphone support.
Windows 11, version 24H2 aptX Adaptive (lossless) on select devices Requires a compatible Qualcomm Bluetooth radio and an implementation exposed by the device manufacturer; it is not a universal Windows feature.

Microsoft’s table is about operating-system support, not a promise that a generic USB adapter or an older laptop will provide every row. A computer can run Windows 11 24H2 and still lack the Qualcomm radio or driver needed for aptX Adaptive.

Classic Audio versus LE Audio

Classic Audio: A2DP and HFP

A2DP is the stereo playback path normally used for music, games and video. The Hands-Free Profile (HFP) is the older two-way path for a headset microphone. Microsoft documents HFP as mono playback plus microphone capture. Activating the headset microphone can therefore replace A2DP stereo with HFP audio.

LE Audio and LC3

LE Audio is a separate Bluetooth system, not a codec switch that upgrades an existing Classic Audio headset. Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer is required, along with compatible Bluetooth LE hardware, a compatible audio codec and manufacturer-provided LE-radio and audio-codec drivers. Windows 10 and Windows 11 version 21H2 do not support LE Audio.

The Bluetooth SIG makes LC3 mandatory for LE Audio, while allowing optional or custom codecs as well. Both the PC and the headphones need a matching LE Audio implementation; a Classic Audio-only headset cannot suddenly use LC3 because a setting is enabled on the PC.

Microsoft notes that not all Windows 11 devices marketed as supporting Bluetooth LE support LE Audio. In Windows, the Use LE Audio when available option appears only when the current hardware and drivers provide the feature. If the option is absent, updating Windows alone is unlikely to fix the limitation.

Stereo while the microphone is active

Microsoft documents an enhanced LE Audio mode that can keep stereo playback while the microphone is active. The stated requirements are Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, integrated factory Bluetooth LE support and updated manufacturer drivers. Without that combination, Classic Audio normally falls back to HFP when the headset microphone opens.

What Windows supports compared with common headphone claims

Codec Windows position What you need at the headphone end
SBC Required for A2DP; supported by Windows 10 and Windows 11 Classic Audio. Every A2DP headset must support it.
AAC Listed from Windows 11 version 21H2; not listed for Windows 10. Headphones must advertise AAC.
aptX Classic Listed from Windows 10 version 1507 and Windows 11 version 21H2. Both the PC host and headphones must implement aptX Classic.
aptX HD Not listed in Microsoft’s native Windows support table. Use a transmitter and headphones that both support aptX HD.
aptX Adaptive (lossless) Documented only for Windows 11 version 24H2 on select devices with compatible Qualcomm radios. The receiver must support the same aptX Adaptive mode.
LDAC Not listed as a native Windows Classic Audio codec. A compatible LDAC transmitter and LDAC headphones are required.
LC3 Used by LE Audio, which requires Windows 11 22H2 or newer plus compatible hardware and drivers. Headphones must support LE Audio and LC3.

Codec labels are not quality rankings. The manufacturers and standards bodies cited here do not publish one universal Windows ranking that accounts for latency, radio conditions, implementation quality and power use. Choose according to compatibility and your use case rather than assuming the newest name always sounds or performs best.

Why your headphone specification is decisive

Take Sony’s WH-1000XM5. Sony lists SBC, AAC and LDAC, Bluetooth 5.2, and the A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and HSP profiles. Its help guide describes LDAC as Sony’s high-resolution Bluetooth transmission technology, and the specification gives an LDAC response of 96 kHz at 990 kbps.

The WH-1000XM5 specification does not list aptX or aptX HD. Applying Microsoft’s bilateral-selection rule, an aptX-only Windows transmitter cannot negotiate aptX with this model. SBC is the common listed codec for that pairing unless the transmitter and computer provide another codec the headset also supports. A transmitter that supports LDAC could provide an LDAC path, but the transmitter must actually include LDAC; aptX capability is irrelevant to this headset.

Does a USB Bluetooth adapter add aptX, aptX HD or LDAC?

It can add a codec path that the computer’s built-in radio lacks, but only when the receiving headphones support that codec. The adapter does not alter the firmware or codec list of the headphones.

Example: Creative BT-W5

Creative’s BT-W5 specification lists aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX and SBC, uses Bluetooth 5.3, and supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. Creative says it automatically chooses the best available codec supported by the connected receiver and supports up to 24-bit/96 kHz USB and wireless playback under its stated codec conditions.

Those conditions are important. With aptX headphones, the BT-W5 can create an aptX-family path even if the PC’s integrated radio cannot. With Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones, the BT-W5 cannot create aptX because the headset does not list aptX; the practical common choice is SBC. The BT-W5 specification also does not list LDAC, so it is not an LDAC solution for the XM5.

Check compatibility before buying a transmitter

  1. Read the headphone’s exact codec list. Use the model’s specification or manual, not a retailer’s generic “high-resolution Bluetooth” wording.
  2. List the transmitter’s codecs. Confirm whether it supports the precise variant—aptX, aptX HD and aptX Adaptive are different entries.
  3. Find the overlap. Only codecs present on both lists can be negotiated.
  4. Check the operating mode. A USB transmitter may provide Classic Audio only; it does not automatically add LE Audio or microphone-capable stereo.
  5. Check resolution claims in context. A 24-bit/96 kHz claim is a maximum under the manufacturer’s documented codec and receiver conditions, not a guarantee for every connection.

Why sound quality drops when you turn on the microphone

On a typical Classic Audio connection, opening the headset microphone changes the Bluetooth profile from A2DP to HFP. A2DP is designed for stereo playback; HFP combines microphone capture with mono playback. The audible result is usually narrower, lower-quality sound in games, calls and system audio.

Ways to avoid the fallback

  • Use supported LE Audio. On a Windows 11 24H2 system meeting Microsoft’s integrated Bluetooth LE and driver requirements, enhanced LE Audio can preserve stereo while the microphone is active.
  • Use a separate microphone. Keeping the headset in A2DP mode avoids opening its HFP capture path. A USB or built-in PC microphone can provide input instead.
  • Use the headset microphone only when necessary. If your PC lacks compatible LE Audio, accept that switching to HFP is the normal Classic Audio behavior rather than a codec defect.

How to work out which codec is actually active

Windows’ standard Bluetooth pages do not consistently expose the active A2DP codec as a readable field. You can still establish the likely path by checking the capabilities and connection state in a disciplined order.

  1. Record the Windows build. Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition and version. Version 21H2 is the documented starting point for Windows 11 AAC and aptX Classic; 22H2 is the LE Audio minimum; 24H2 is relevant to select aptX Adaptive and enhanced stereo-with-microphone systems.
  2. Check LE Audio availability. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices. If Use LE Audio when available is missing, the current PC does not expose Microsoft’s supported LE Audio feature.
  3. Compare published codec lists. Write down the codecs in the headphone manual and the PC radio, driver or USB transmitter documentation. Remove every codec not present at both ends.
  4. Apply Windows’ selection rule. Windows chooses the first remaining codec in its documented order for A2DP. Do not assume that a transmitter’s highest-numbered or highest-bitrate codec won.
  5. Watch for profile changes. Start playback with the microphone off, then open an application that uses the headset microphone. A sudden move to mono or a large quality change indicates the HFP path on Classic Audio.
  6. Use vendor indicators when available. Some USB transmitters and headphone applications display the negotiated codec. Treat that indicator as the connection’s current state; a specification list alone only describes what is possible.

If no device reports the codec, the honest conclusion may be limited to the negotiated set—for example, “SBC or AAC are possible, and the headset microphone is currently forcing HFP.” Avoid inferring LDAC, aptX HD or aptX Adaptive merely from a marketing label.

Troubleshooting common codec problems

The headset always connects as SBC

  • Confirm that the headset actually lists AAC or aptX; SBC is the required A2DP fallback.
  • Check the Windows version and radio driver. Windows 10 does not list AAC, and Windows 11 features remain dependent on manufacturer implementation.
  • If you use a USB transmitter, verify that its driver is active and that the headset supports one of its codecs. A transmitter cannot add a missing receiver codec.

The microphone makes music sound bad

  • Confirm that the application is opening the headset’s Bluetooth microphone; that normally invokes HFP on Classic Audio.
  • Use a separate input device, or move to a fully supported LE Audio setup that meets the Windows 11 24H2 requirements for stereo with microphone.

The LE Audio option is missing

  • Check that Windows is version 22H2 or newer.
  • Install the PC manufacturer’s Bluetooth LE-radio and audio-codec drivers.
  • Verify that the computer has compatible Bluetooth LE hardware; Bluetooth LE branding alone does not prove LE Audio support.
  • Confirm that the headphones support LE Audio and LC3. A Classic Audio-only model cannot use LC3.

An aptX transmitter does not improve a Sony WH-1000XM5

The XM5 lists SBC, AAC and LDAC, not aptX. Use a transmitter that shares LDAC if LDAC is your goal, or accept the common SBC path. An aptX-only adapter cannot change the XM5’s supported-codec list.

Choosing the right path for music, games and calls

Priority Most relevant checks Typical decision
Music quality Codec overlap, headphone implementation and stable radio link. Use the highest-quality codec that both devices support; do not buy a transmitter for a codec absent from the headphones.
Gaming latency Transmitter and headset latency modes, plus whether microphone use invokes HFP. Prefer a mutually supported low-latency mode, or use a separate microphone to keep stereo playback.
Calls and voice chat Whether the system supports LE Audio stereo-with-microphone. Use supported LE Audio on Windows 11 24H2, or separate playback and microphone devices.
Maximum compatibility SBC support and reliable drivers. Keep SBC available as the fallback; treat optional codecs as conditional improvements.

The practical answer is always hardware-specific: identify the Windows build and radio, read the exact headphone codec list, determine whether the connection is Classic or LE Audio, and then verify what happens when the microphone opens. Codec names describe possibilities; the negotiated overlap determines the sound you actually receive.
