1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor Bluetooth Classic stereo music, both your phone or computer and your headphones must support the same codec; the devices then negotiate which mutually supported codec to use. A codec name on a product page does not prove it is active, and a higher bitrate does not guarantee better sound or longer battery life. The connection mode, device software, settings, and implementation all matter.
How Bluetooth codec compatibility works
For Bluetooth Classic stereo playback, the relevant profile is A2DP. SBC is its required baseline codec; optional codecs such as AAC, LDAC, or aptX work only when both the source device and the headphones, earbuds, or speaker support them. The devices negotiate a codec they have in common, subject to the source platform’s implementation and priorities.

That means a headphone specification alone cannot tell you what codec a particular phone or computer will use. Check the exact source model, operating-system version, headphone model and firmware, connection mode, and any relevant audio settings. Microsoft documents codec support and selection as dependent on Windows version and hardware; aptX Adaptive, for example, is limited to select Windows devices with compatible Qualcomm Bluetooth radios. Microsoft’s Windows Classic Audio documentation describes the platform’s behavior.

A practical two-device check
- Look up the codec support for the exact phone or computer model and its operating-system version.
- Check the exact headphone or speaker model’s manual, including firmware and whether the codec applies to Classic Audio (A2DP) or LE Audio.
- Confirm both devices share the codec and are connected in the mode that uses it.
- Check device or app settings for a codec or sound-quality option that must be enabled, then verify the active connection if your device exposes that information.
Sony’s WF-1000XM6 guide illustrates why the mode and settings matter: it lists SBC, AAC, and LDAC for A2DP, but LC3 for LE Audio, and notes that settings may be needed to use a supported codec. Its LDAC instructions point to a sound-quality connection setting. This is a product-specific example, not a universal menu path. Sony WF-1000XM6 Help Guide: Supported codecs.
Why won’t my phone use LDAC with my headphones?
LDAC will not be selected simply because the headphones advertise it. The phone must support LDAC for the relevant connection mode, the headphones must support it, and settings or platform priorities must allow it. If either end lacks support, the devices use another codec they share—often SBC, or another mutually supported option.

Check the phone’s exact model and software, not just its brand or the general Android version, then consult the headphones’ instructions for any required sound-quality setting. Also verify that you are using Classic Audio A2DP: a product may list a different codec for LE Audio. Sony’s guide, for example, identifies LDAC under A2DP and LC3 under LE Audio.

Not automatically. Sound depends on the codec’s implementation, the source material, connection conditions, and the listener. A codec’s name or maximum bitrate is not a reliable universal ranking of audible quality.

Bluetooth SIG says listening tests found LC3 can improve audio quality over SBC even at a 50% lower bitrate. The statement is attributed to Manfred Lutzky, Head of Audio for Communications at Fraunhofer IIS, and is a standards-industry account of test results—not a guarantee that every listener will hear a difference with every device. Bluetooth SIG’s LE Audio overview.
Higher bitrate capacity is likewise not proof of better sound in every use. Sony says its WF-1000XM6’s LDAC mode can transmit approximately three times more data than SBC at specified settings: 990 kbps at 96/48 kHz or 909 kbps at 88.2/44.1 kHz. That comparison describes those settings on that product; it does not establish that LDAC always sounds better than AAC or another codec. Listening conditions, audio content, connection behavior, and endpoint implementation remain relevant. Sony’s codec guide.

Does LDAC use more battery than AAC?
There is no dependable universal answer based on codec names alone. Battery impact varies with implementation and how the product is used, and the available evidence does not establish a cross-device runtime difference between LDAC and AAC. For a meaningful comparison, look for measured battery runtimes on the specific products under comparable settings and conditions.
Bluetooth SIG says LC3’s lower bitrate can give product developers options: they may target higher audio quality at similar power consumption, similar or slightly better quality at less than half the bitrate (described as half the power consumption), or longer battery life while maintaining similar quality. The FAQ describes up to double battery life as a possible design choice, not as a measured runtime result for every LC3 product. A manufacturer can spend efficiency on runtime, quality, or a balance. Is LC3 better than SBC?
Bluetooth SIG reports that listening tests found LC3 can provide higher quality than SBC at the same bitrate and power consumption, or similar to slightly better quality at less than half the bitrate. Those findings support LC3’s design goals, but they do not establish a universal ranking for every product or listener. LC3 is associated with LE Audio; SBC is the required baseline for Classic Audio A2DP. Confirm that both endpoints support LE Audio and that the connection is actually using it before expecting LC3.
Classic Audio, LE Audio, and why a Bluetooth version number is not enough
Classic Audio and LE Audio are distinct audio modes. Microsoft describes A2DP as the general Classic Audio playback profile and HFP as the hands-free profile for headset microphone use; LE Audio is a separate audio technology over Bluetooth Low Energy radio. Sony’s WF-1000XM6 guide similarly assigns SBC, AAC, and LDAC to A2DP and LC3 to LE Audio.
A Bluetooth version number or an LC3 mention in a general specification does not by itself prove that two specific devices support LE Audio together—or that the current connection is using it. Check both device manuals and the active connection mode. See Microsoft’s Classic Audio documentation and Sony’s product-specific codec guide.
Why does Bluetooth sound worse when I use my laptop microphone?
On Windows, activating a headset microphone can change the audio path from stereo A2DP playback to HFP hands-free audio. Microsoft says Windows 11 selects HFP when an application opens the microphone endpoint. Windows 10 may expose separate Stereo and Hands-Free endpoints, and opening the headset microphone switches the connection to HFP. HFP handles microphone capture with monaural playback/capture, unlike A2DP’s high-quality stereo playback.
If music quality drops during a call or meeting, check the app’s selected input and output devices and whether it has activated the headset microphone. Where your setup permits, use a separate microphone while keeping the Bluetooth headset as the stereo output. This is an audio-mode change, not necessarily evidence that the codec has failed.
