Clean only the mesh areas Apple specifies for your model: its wet-brush method is for AirPods 3, 4, and 5, not a universal AirPods cleaning method.
Start with the model and the simplest checks
Apple’s instructions vary by model, so identify your AirPods before applying any cleaning method. A quieter side can be caused by debris, but it is not proof that the mesh is dirty; an audio-balance setting can also make one side sound lower.

- Check the mesh. Remove the ear tips if your model has them, then inspect each AirPod’s microphone and speaker mesh for debris. Use the model-specific cleaning instructions below; for AirPods Pro, follow Apple’s Pro-specific directions rather than the AirPods 3, 4, and 5 method.
- Center the audio balance. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Balance and place the control in the center.

Clean AirPods 3, 4, or 5 meshes using Apple’s method
Apple’s cleaning article, published August 21, 2026, specifies this procedure for AirPods 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods 5. You can use a Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit or gather the alternative supplies Apple lists:

Apple names the Belkin kit as an option but does not make it necessary. Whatever supplies you use, follow the steps for the specific mesh locations on your model. The available instructions do not establish a current price or verify kit contents or marketplace availability.
AirPods 4 and 5
Clean only the meshes circled in Apple’s model-specific instructions. Do not extend the procedure to other parts of the earbuds.

AirPods 3
Clean only the indicated snorkel mesh, control leak mesh, and top microphone.
Brush, blot, rinse, and dry
- Hold the AirPod with the mesh facing up. Brush the mesh in circles for about 15 seconds.
- Turn the AirPod over and blot the mesh against a paper towel.
- Repeat the brush-and-blot sequence until you have completed three rounds on that mesh.
- Rinse the toothbrush with distilled water, then repeat the brushing and blotting sequence to rinse the mesh.
- Leave the AirPods to dry completely for at least two hours before using them or putting them back in the case.

Use different instructions for AirPods Pro and other models
For AirPods Pro, Apple’s quieter-audio guidance says to remove the ear tip and inspect the microphone and speaker mesh. Use Apple’s cleaning instructions to navigate to the procedure for your exact model. Do not use the AirPods 3, 4, and 5 wet-brush steps on AirPods Pro.
The mesh method described above is specifically identified for AirPods 3, 4, and 5. If you have another model, choose its instructions on Apple’s cleaning page instead of assuming the same procedure applies.

Avoid damage while cleaning
- Do not run AirPods under water.
- Do not use sharp objects or abrasive materials on the earbuds or meshes.
- Do not put liquid on areas Apple’s instructions do not identify for cleaning.
If the AirPod body—not just the mesh—has lotion, sunscreen, soap, or oil on it, Apple says to wipe the body with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water, dry it with a soft lint-free cloth, and allow at least two hours to dry. If one side is still quiet—or has no sound
If cleaning the appropriate mesh and centering the balance do not restore sound, check charging before resetting the earbuds. For an AirPod with no sound, Apple’s sequence is:

- Make sure the charging case is charged.
- Put both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds.
- On your iPhone or iPad, check that each AirPod is charging.
- Test the AirPod that was not working.
- If it still does not work, reset the AirPods. If an AirPod was recently replaced, it may need setup.
Apple provides its quiet- and non-working-AirPod steps in the troubleshooting guide. If the issue persists after the relevant checks, Apple says to get service.
