What Bluesky has proposed
Bluesky has applied to create “.bsky” as an internet domain suffix, comparable in broad form to .com or .org. The proposal could give users a shorter identity associated with the service and, potentially, support more expansive personal profile pages. Those are possibilities described in TechCrunch’s October 6, 2026 report, not features confirmed as available.

Bluesky COO Rose Wang framed the idea around control of online identity, telling TechCrunch: “Bluesky was built on the belief that you should own your presence online, not rent it from a platform that can take it away.” She also said: “Domains are a big part of the open web, as they allow users to control their own online identity.” That is the company’s rationale, not a guarantee that a .bsky name would make an account, its audience, or its content portable beyond Bluesky. TechCrunch’s report is the source for the proposal and those statements.

No. The application had not been approved as of the October 6, 2026 report. Bluesky CEO Toni Schneider said ICANN would publish applications on October 7, 2026, including Bluesky’s request. TechCrunch reported an expected application process of 18–24 months; that is a reported estimate, not an official approval date or a promised launch window.

A domain-based handle and a proposed .bsky name are different arrangements. With a domain you control, you are responsible for keeping registration and DNS settings in order. Domains can be lost, transferred, or misconfigured; these are general domain-management risks, not established details about .bsky. The available sources do not say whether a future .bsky name could be transferred.

- If you want a shorter handle: .bsky might offer one if the application succeeds and Bluesky establishes a way to distribute names. Neither outcome is settled.
- If you want a custom identity now: a domain you already control can be used as a handle through Bluesky’s existing custom-domain approach. Setup depends on the domain and verification method; the WordPress example is specific to its software context.
- If you are weighing the two: consider availability, who controls the underlying domain, your responsibility for DNS, and the rules Bluesky eventually sets for .bsky names. The report does not establish final pricing, eligibility, allocation, or transferability.
For now, .bsky is a proposal rather than a product users can obtain. The shorter-handle example is useful for understanding the idea, but it should not be treated as a promised outcome or a date you can plan around.
