Bluehost Shared Hosting: What It Is, What You Get, and Who It Suits

Bluehost shared hosting places multiple websites on shared server resources. Compare plan capacity, included features, and renewal pricing before choosing.

Bluehost shared hosting puts multiple websites on the same server, where they share resources such as storage, bandwidth, and processing power. The plan you choose determines capacity and features, so it is best understood as a hosting starting point—not a fixed amount of performance for every site.

How Bluehost shared hosting works

A web host stores the files and data that make a website available online. With shared hosting, multiple websites use the same server and share its underlying resources. Bluehost’s service also includes website and domain-based email hosting; the specific capabilities depend on the selected plan. Bluehost’s overview describes the service as a beginner-friendly option for individuals and small businesses who want to get online without managing complex technical setup.

Depending on the plan, Bluehost lists features such as hosting one or more websites, domain-based email that can be used in webmail or third-party email clients, a control panel, free SSL, and one-click application installation, including WordPress. Check the current plan details before purchasing: the overview does not promise every feature on every plan.

How the listed plans differ

Bluehost’s current comparison shows three plans with different site counts, storage allowances, email quotas, support options, and commerce features. Its visit estimates are provider guidance, not independently measured limits or performance guarantees.

Plan Websites NVMe storage Provider visit guidance Email quota per mailbox Support
Starter 10 10 GB About 40,000 visits per month 100 MB 24/7 chat
Business 50 50 GB About 200,000 visits per month Unlimited 24/7 chat and phone
eCommerce Essentials 100 100 GB About 400,000 visits per month Unlimited 24/7 chat and phone

Figures and features in this table come from Bluehost’s plan comparison. The visit estimates are approximate guidance from Bluehost, not a guarantee that a site will handle that volume under every workload. Traffic is only one consideration: site complexity and how resources are used also matter, and the comparison does not establish how any plan will perform for a particular site.

What the eCommerce plan adds

Bluehost lists secure payment processing, WooCommerce auto-install, subscriptions, memberships, paid courses, and an affiliate-program feature for your site with eCommerce Essentials. Choose it for those listed commerce capabilities rather than assuming a larger site count or visit estimate alone makes it the right fit.

Features to verify by plan

The comparison marks free first-year domain registration, a migration tool, CDN, managed WordPress updates, free Let’s Encrypt SSL, malware scanning, a web application firewall, and DDoS protection as included across the listed plans. It distinguishes some inclusions by plan, including malware detection or removal and free first-year domain privacy. Because these are plan-specific rows on a live comparison page, confirm the exact current inclusion for the plan you are considering.

How to choose a plan for your site

  • Count the sites and estimate storage needs. Compare your current sites and likely near-term needs with each plan’s listed website count and NVMe storage.
  • Consider email and support. Starter lists a 100 MB quota per mailbox and 24/7 chat. Business and eCommerce Essentials list unlimited mailbox quotas and phone support as well as chat.
  • Match features to the workload. If you need the listed store, membership, subscription, or course features, compare those directly. Do not treat the approximate visit figures as guaranteed capacity.
  • Check the billing term and renewal rate. Introductory pricing is not the same as the later rate; compare the term you intend to buy and its renewal price before checkout.

Introductory prices and renewals

Bluehost’s pricing page displayed Starter at $3.99 per month for a 36-month term, renewing at $9.99 per month, and Business at $6.99 per month for a 36-month term, renewing at $13.99 per month when checked for this article. These are time-sensitive advertised prices, not permanent rates. Check Bluehost’s pricing page and the checkout total for the offer and billing term available to you.

The plan comparison lists separate renewal rates for three billing lengths:

Plan Monthly renewal 12-month renewal 36-month renewal
Starter $15.99 $11.99 per month $9.99 per month
Business $20.99 $15.99 per month $13.99 per month
eCommerce Essentials $32.99 $24.99 per month $21.99 per month

These are renewal prices as listed by Bluehost’s plan comparison, separate from introductory offers. Bluehost’s pricing page and comparison may show different term selectors or plan presentations, so use the selected billing term and checkout offer rather than assuming a single universal monthly rate.

When to consider more hosting capacity

Bluehost says its Scalable Shared Web Hosting plans increase CPU or vCPU power, storage, and website capacity. Its help page says existing shared-hosting customers transition to these plans after exceeding current usage limits, but it does not give a universal traffic number or a single upgrade threshold. Read Bluehost’s explanation of Scalable Shared Web Hosting for the provider’s description.

Bluehost also presents VPS and dedicated hosting as alternatives to shared hosting, and characterizes VPS as a higher-resource option. The available pages do not provide independent benchmarks for choosing a category, so base that decision on your actual requirements and the limits Bluehost gives for the plan—not on an assumed speed ranking.

Guarantees and service terms

Bluehost’s pricing page describes a 30-day money-back guarantee for eligible hosting and attached solutions, subject to exclusions; keeping a free domain may involve a domain fee. The page also describes a 99.99% shared-hosting uptime SLA with a limited credit remedy. Neither statement is an unconditional promise: read the current pricing and service terms for eligibility, exclusions, and remedy details before relying on them.
