Set that backing state instead; if you only need an initial value and do not need React to control later edits, use defaultValue.
Why doesn’t input.value = 'x' fill a React form?
A controlled input gets its displayed value from a prop, usually a state variable. React’s input documentation describes this as making the input match the value supplied by the component. Directly assigning to the DOM node changes its current property, but it does not update the state variable. When React renders again, it can put the state-backed value back into the field.

React requires a controlled input to have an onChange handler that synchronously updates its backing value. As React’s documentation explains, if the state passed as value is not updated synchronously during onChange, React can revert the field to the specified value after a keystroke.
How do I programmatically set a React input value?
For a change initiated by your application—such as clicking a Fill button—call the setter for the state that supplies value:

function NameField() {
const [name, setName] = useState('');
return (
<>
<input
value={name}
onChange={event => setName(event.target.value)}
/>
<button type="button" onClick={() => setName('x')}>
Fill
</button>
</>
);
}
The input and the rest of the component now use the same state value. This is the appropriate route when other application behavior also needs to know the field’s current value.
When should I use defaultValue instead?
Use defaultValue when the field needs an initial value but React does not need to control its current value after that:

<input defaultValue="x" />
This initializes an uncontrolled input; it does not synchronize future edits with a React state variable. Keep the input uncontrolled for its lifetime rather than switching it to a controlled value prop later.

What can make a controlled input behave unexpectedly?
- Missing or non-string text value: Keep a controlled text input’s value a string throughout its lifetime. If data may be absent, initialize it to
''or use a fallback such asvalue={someValue ?? ''}. - Delayed or transformed updates: In
onChange, synchronously store the value read from the event, such assetName(event.target.value). Delaying the update or transforming the text in the handler can disrupt the displayed value or caret behavior. - Checkbox or radio field: The checked state is controlled with
checked, notvalue. Readevent.target.checkedin the change handler.
What if a script or browser automation needs to fill the field?
Changing a DOM property and dispatching a synthetic event is not equivalent to updating React component state. React’s issue tracker documents historical cases involving input-value tracking and event ordering, including a report that programmatic changes did not fire onChange: issue #12643 and issue #19389. These reports do not establish one diagnosis for every React version or application, and React’s input reference does not prescribe a universal native-setter recipe. For application-owned behavior, update the state that controls the input; for automation, use the automation framework’s supported user-interaction mechanism rather than relying on direct property assignment as a React API.
