Amazon EKS manages the Kubernetes control-plane infrastructure, but it also lets customers tune selected, validated settings that affect how control-plane components behave. Those settings apply across the cluster, not to a single namespace or application; some require the Provisioned Control Plane model. You do not get direct control of API server hosts or unrestricted access to Kubernetes control-plane flags.
What control-plane settings can you change in EKS?
EKS operates the Kubernetes API server, scheduler, and controller manager. Advanced configuration exposes selected parameters for those components; AWS validates values against supported bounds that can vary by Kubernetes version. This is configuration of a managed service, not ownership of its underlying hosts.

| Control | What it affects | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduler resource scoring | Whether the scheduler favors nodes with more remaining capacity (LeastAllocated) or nodes that are already more utilized (MostAllocated). |
Changes affect future placement decisions; existing running pods are not automatically moved. |
| HPA controller sync period | How often the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler controller checks and reconciles scaling decisions. | Requires Provisioned Control Plane. A shorter period can prompt decisions sooner, but increases reconciliation requests and reduces how many HPA objects the controller can process on schedule. |
| Terminated-pod garbage-collection threshold | When the controller manager deletes terminated pods. | Requires Provisioned Control Plane. A lower threshold can increase work against the cluster database. |
| API event retention | How long API events remain available. | Changing retention can help manage event-heavy clusters, but a shorter period leaves less time to investigate events in the cluster. |
| Service NodePort range | The port range available to NodePort services. | Check for port conflicts and confirm firewall and security-group rules before changing it. |
The supported fields, defaults, and bounds depend on the Kubernetes version. Check the current AWS documentation and the DescribeClusterVersions API rather than copying values from an article written for another version. A value that is valid for one version may not be supported for another.

How do scheduler scoring choices change placement?
| Strategy | Placement tendency | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
LeastAllocated |
Favors nodes with more unused capacity, tending to spread placements. | Preserves room on nodes, but can leave more nodes lightly used. |
MostAllocated |
Favors nodes that are already more utilized, tending to pack workloads onto fewer nodes. | May make node-pool consolidation more feasible and reduce compute spend, but concentrates more workloads on a node or in an Availability Zone. |
These are placement tendencies, not guarantees of a particular cost or performance result. Packing can make a node or Availability Zone failure affect more workloads; spreading can leave less concentrated failure exposure but may reduce consolidation opportunities. The right choice depends on workload behavior and the consequences of losing capacity. Test the effect before changing a production cluster.

What does cluster-wide configuration mean for workloads?
EKS does not scope these advanced values to a namespace or individual application. A scheduler change can therefore affect placement for workloads across the cluster, while controller settings can affect the relevant controller behavior throughout that cluster. Plan for the broad scope even if one application prompted the change.
- Try the change outside production first and observe how representative workloads behave.
- Check dependent controllers and applications for sensitivity to timing, placement, or event availability.
- For a NodePort change, verify network rules and check that the new range does not conflict with existing services.
- Confirm the field and its accepted value for the cluster’s Kubernetes version before applying it.
How should you choose public or private API endpoint access?
EKS cluster API endpoint access can be public, private through the VPC, or both. When private access is enabled, requests originating in the cluster VPC use the private endpoint. Private access must be enabled before public access can be disabled.
Rank #2
- Used Book in Good Condition
| Endpoint choice | Useful when | Decision to check |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Administrators or automation need to reach the API server from outside the VPC. | Decide whether that access fits the cluster’s security boundary and connectivity requirements. |
| Private | API requests should use private VPC connectivity. | Confirm administrators and automation can reach the VPC endpoint; public access cannot be disabled unless private access is enabled. |
| Both | Some clients need public connectivity while others use the VPC path. | Account for both access paths when setting network boundaries and operating access. |
Choose based on where administrators and automation actually run, the intended network boundary, and how those clients connect. Endpoint exposure is a separate control from advanced scheduler or controller settings.
Which control-plane logs can EKS send to CloudWatch Logs?
Control-plane logging is off by default. EKS can send selected log types to CloudWatch Logs, where delivery is best effort and generally occurs within minutes. CloudWatch Logs ingestion and storage charges apply.

Log types can be enabled individually. Select the streams that support your operational and security needs, and account for the cost of ingesting and retaining them. Logging increases diagnostic visibility; it does not change endpoint access or grant control over the managed control-plane hosts.
What does EKS manage during upgrades—and what remains yours?
AWS describes the EKS control plane as highly available and says it automatically replaces unhealthy control-plane nodes. During Kubernetes version updates, EKS performs rolling updates of API server instances. AWS can also roll out platform versions automatically and incrementally within a Kubernetes minor version. These service-managed operations do not remove the need to check cluster health or plan compatibility.
Rank #4
Operators still need to plan Kubernetes version transitions and coordinate the control plane with worker nodes, add-ons, applications, and clients. AWS calls out add-ons such as VPC CNI, CoreDNS, and kube-proxy as part of that work.

How long is an EKS Kubernetes version supported?
AWS’s EKS upgrade policy states that standard support lasts 14 months after a Kubernetes minor version is released, followed by 12 additional months of extended support at an added per-cluster-hour cost. The upgrade policy can determine whether a cluster enters extended support or is automatically upgraded when standard support ends. Check AWS’s current policy for the applicable dates and charges before making a lifecycle decision.
Best Value
Support duration is separate from control-plane configuration: changing advanced settings does not replace version planning, component compatibility work, or a decision about the cluster’s upgrade policy.
