Blue Switches Feel Great—Until You Type on Them for 8 Hours

Blue switches are clicky and tactile. If you want the bump without the intentional click, compare non-clicky tactile options—but don’t treat switch specifications as proof of what will feel comfortable after eight hours.

Cherry MX Blue switches combine a tactile bump with an intentional audible click. That can feel satisfying, but neither the sound nor the switch specifications prove that Blue switches will cause—or prevent—fatigue during a long typing session. If you want to keep tactile feedback while reducing the deliberate click, compare a non-clicky tactile switch such as Cherry MX Brown or a keyboard’s tactile-quiet option.

What makes blue switches feel different?

Blue is both clicky and tactile: you feel a distinct feedback point and hear a designed click. A non-clicky tactile switch keeps the bump without that intentional click; a linear switch has smooth travel without the tactile bump. Those are different preferences, not a ranking of which switch is best for every typist.

HP describes Cherry MX Blue as louder and requiring more force than Cherry MX Brown or Red in its mechanical keyboard switch explainer. The click may be enjoyable at first yet distracting over a long session, especially in a shared or quiet room. Whether it bothers you depends on your own preference and environment.

Are blue switches too loud for long typing?

They are intentionally clicky, but the available manufacturer materials do not give a standardized sound level for a complete keyboard. The switch is only part of what you hear: a keyboard’s overall sound depends on the particular board and setup. A change in switch type alone therefore does not guarantee a quiet keyboard.

Corsair’s switch guide explains that switches differ in feel, sound and actuation force, but it does not establish a decibel level for every keyboard using a given switch. If noise is the main problem, consider the complete keyboard in the place where you use it rather than relying on a switch label alone.

What switch keeps the tactile bump but is quieter?

A non-clicky tactile switch is the closest match if you like the feedback but not the deliberate click. Cherry MX Brown is one comparison point. In Corsair’s guide, Cherry MX Blue is listed at 2.2 mm actuation and 60 g force, while Cherry MX Brown is listed at 2.0 mm and 55 g. These are switch specifications, not measures of comfort or a threshold that predicts fatigue.

There are also keyboard models sold with a tactile-quiet option. Logitech’s MX Mechanical product page lists tactile quiet, clicky and linear variants. Check the exact variant and layout on the live product page; the labels describe distinct sound-and-feel choices, not a promise that one will suit every user.

Will switching from blue to brown make typing less tiring?

That cannot be promised. The force and travel figures above describe the switches; they do not show how a particular person will feel after eight hours. The sources cited here do not establish that Blue switches cause eight-hour fatigue or that Brown or another alternative prevents it. Treat a switch change as a way to alter sound and feel, not as a proven remedy for discomfort.

Can you replace your blue switches?

That depends on the keyboard. A Brown switch is a possible replacement only if the specific board accepts a compatible switch. Without the keyboard model and its switch-mounting details, compatibility cannot be determined.

  1. Find the keyboard’s exact model name and check its manufacturer specifications for switch type and whether the switches are replaceable.
  2. Confirm that any replacement matches the board’s switch mounting and other compatibility requirements before buying.
  3. If the board does not support compatible replacement switches, compare complete keyboards that offer the sound and feel you want, such as a tactile-quiet variant.

How to choose for a long typing session

  • Keep the click and bump: stay with a clicky tactile switch if its sound is part of what you enjoy.
  • Keep the bump, reduce intentional clicking: compare non-clicky tactile switches such as Brown or a keyboard’s tactile-quiet option.
  • Prioritize smooth travel: consider linear switches, knowing they give up the tactile bump.
  • Decide based on sound where you type: the complete keyboard and your environment matter, and the cited sources do not quantify the sound of every setup.
  • Check the exact model before replacing switches: compatibility cannot be inferred from “Blue” or “Brown” alone.
