If Minecraft Dungeons matchmaking is not working because you expect a public queue for random players, nothing is broken: the game does not offer public matchmaking. Its online co-op is designed for friends. If you already have someone to play with but can’t join your friend in Minecraft Dungeons, check platform compatibility, account access, online-play eligibility, and multiplayer settings before troubleshooting your network.
Does Minecraft Dungeons have public matchmaking?
No. Minecraft Dungeons has no public matchmaking service for finding random teammates. Mojang’s launch FAQ says the game is designed to be played with friends, either locally or online: Minecraft Dungeons launching May 26. Arrange a session with friends and use the game’s friend or invitation flow; waiting for a random-player queue or changing network settings will not add one.

The game supports local couch co-op as well as online co-op. Mojang’s FAQ describes up to four players in local or online co-op, and current Minecraft Help support describes online groups of two to four players: Minecraft Dungeons multiplayer and cross-platform play.

Can’t join a friend in Minecraft Dungeons? Check platform compatibility
Cross-platform play is supported among Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows. Microsoft announced the free cross-play update on November 17, 2020; the launch FAQ’s statement that cross-platform play was not yet available is historical, not current guidance. - Confirm everyone is running Minecraft Dungeons, not another Minecraft game.
- Check that each player can access the game’s online and cross-platform options.
- If possible, test whether the affected player can join someone on the same platform. This helps distinguish a cross-platform-specific issue from a broader online-play problem.
Cross-platform multiplayer is separate from cloud saves. Cloud-save availability or setup does not establish whether a group can play together online.
How to enable multiplayer in Minecraft Dungeons
Use the official Minecraft Dungeons multiplayer and cross-platform support guide for the game’s settings instructions. Then have each player check account access and platform eligibility:

- Sign in to the intended account. Minecraft Help says a Microsoft account may be required depending on the platform. Check the Minecraft Dungeons account FAQ if you are unsure about the requirement for a particular platform.
- Allow multiplayer and cross-platform play. Check the game’s multiplayer settings on each installation. Account, family, and child restrictions can vary by platform and account type, so use the relevant platform’s current account controls rather than relying on generic menu instructions.
- Check console online-play eligibility. Minecraft Help’s account FAQ identifies Xbox Game Pass Core and Nintendo Switch Online as requirements on those consoles; general Minecraft multiplayer support also lists PlayStation Plus for PlayStation console play. Verify current terms with the platform provider. The general guidance is not specific to Dungeons: Minecraft multiplayer connectivity support.
An online membership can determine whether a console account is eligible to play online; it does not create public matchmaking or by itself fix a failed invitation, account restriction, or service outage.

What to do if an invite fails or you see “connection to host timed out”
That wording is commonly used by players to describe a timeout, but it is not established here as an official catalog of Minecraft Dungeons error messages. A timeout alone does not identify the cause or prove that the host’s router is responsible. The official sources cited above do not establish one universal router, DNS, port-forwarding, or hardware fix for Dungeons connection failures.

Before escalating, narrow down where the failure occurs and record the details:
- Does the problem affect one friend or every friend?
- Does the invitation appear, and what happens when the player accepts it?
- Does cross-play fail while a same-platform group can connect?
- Can each player access online play in another game?
- What platform is each player using, what exact message appears, and when did the failure happen?
- Can each player confirm account sign-in, multiplayer settings, and any required console online membership?
Restarting the game or checking the platform’s official service-status page may be reasonable general checks, but the sources available here do not establish either as a Dungeons-specific remedy. Avoid treating port forwarding, DNS changes, disabling security, or buying networking equipment as proven fixes without evidence tied to your platform and error.

What to include when contacting support
Share the platforms involved, the exact on-screen message, when the attempt failed, whether the invite appeared, and whether the issue affects one friend or everyone. Include each player’s sign-in and online-play eligibility status and whether cross-platform play is enabled. These details help support distinguish an account or platform restriction from an invitation or connection problem.
