Blue-Green Deployments Don’t Protect You From a Bad Database Migration

Blue-green deployment can reduce application rollout risk, but database compatibility, replication limits, and post-cutover writes still determine whether a migration can be rolled back safely.

Blue-green deployment can make an application release safer by switching traffic between environments, but it does not make a database migration safe by itself. If old and new application versions cannot both work with the database during the transition—or if the chosen replication method does not copy a schema change—traffic switching cannot fix the problem.

Why a migration can break a blue-green release

Blue-green deployment changes which application environment receives traffic. The database may be shared between environments or kept in sync through replication, so changing application traffic does not automatically switch, restore, or reconcile database state.

The risky period is the overlap: the old application may still be serving requests, the new version may be starting to use a changed schema, and a rollback may send traffic back to code that cannot understand the new data. AWS recommends decoupling schema changes from code releases and keeping database updates backward compatible so the old application can continue to interact with the data (AWS guidance on data synchronization and schema changes).

Use an expand-and-contract migration

Make the database transition in stages, rather than coupling an incompatible schema change to the application cutover. AWS documents this approach as a way to preserve compatibility across the transition; the precise implementation depends on the database engine and replication setup.

  1. Expand the schema. Add the new fields, tables, or other structures without removing or changing what the currently running application requires.
  2. Populate new structures if needed. Use triggers or asynchronous processing to keep the new representation populated while the existing code remains active.
  3. Deploy compatible application code. The new version should tolerate the expanded schema and, where required, the old schema during the transition. AWS also advises that new application code remain compatible with the old schema.
  4. Contract only when the old version is no longer needed. Remove old fields, entities, or relationships after the previous application version is no longer required. Once those elements are deleted, AWS warns that the earlier application version is no longer operational.

This sequence makes rollback a compatibility question, not merely a traffic-routing operation: if the old code must be available as a rollback target, its required schema and data must remain usable.

What can go wrong with replication?

Replication behavior is specific to the database and method in use. For Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL blue/green deployments that use logical replication, AWS documents several constraints that can affect a migration (RDS blue/green deployment considerations).

  • Allows for quick and Easy transfer of all content
  • The 256GB Turbo USB 3.0 Flash Drive can hold approximately 47, 349 songs
  • Sliding collar, capless design with integrated loop makes it easy to attach to key chains, backpacks and etc.
  • DDL may not reach green. Statements such as CREATE TABLE and CREATE SCHEMA are not replicated from blue to green. AWS says detected DDL changes can leave green in a “Replication degraded” state; recovery may require deleting and recreating the deployment and green databases.
  • Sequence state has special handling. NEXTVAL operations are not synchronized during ordinary replication. Sequence values are adjusted at switchover, and an exceptionally large number of sequences may cause a switchover timeout.
  • Some data objects are not kept in sync. Large objects are not replicated; creating or modifying them can degrade replication. Materialized views are not automatically refreshed in green.
  • Updates and deletes need row identity. They require a primary key or appropriate replica identity.
  • Partition changes can be unsupported. New partitions that require DDL are not supported during the deployment.
  • Write load can outpace apply capacity. High continuous write throughput can exceed the green side’s single-threaded logical-apply capacity, causing lag or failure.

These are RDS PostgreSQL logical-replication limitations, not universal rules for all PostgreSQL replication or every blue-green architecture. Check the current vendor documentation for the exact database engine, service version, and replication method in use.

What staging does—and does not—prove

An RDS blue/green deployment gives teams a green environment in which to make and test changes before switchover, with replication configured from blue to green (Amazon RDS blue/green deployments overview). That is useful for exercising the migration path, but a successful staging run does not prove that every application/schema combination is backward compatible or that unsupported DDL and data objects were copied.

Test the actual migration sequence with representative application behavior and write load. Observe replication lag, confirm how the schema change reaches green, and verify recovery assumptions before relying on the deployment as a rollback mechanism. AWS says RDS switchover downtime is usually under one minute, but it can take longer depending on workload; treat that as a service estimate, not a guarantee for a particular deployment (Amazon RDS blue/green deployments overview).

Plan rollback around data, not just traffic

Reversing DNS or application traffic does not undo writes made after cutover, restore a removed column, or guarantee that the former production environment has current data. AWS’s general guidance recommends keeping both environments’ data current and separating schema changes from application releases. A rollback plan should define how it handles the database state and compatibility boundary as well as the application routing.

  • Schema compatibility: Identify the last point at which the old application can still run safely.
  • Post-cutover writes: Determine whether and how writes made on the new production environment will be reflected if traffic returns to blue.
  • Replication position: Specify how lag or an interrupted replication stream affects the decision to switch back.
  • Backups and recovery: Confirm which recovery points exist for each environment. For RDS, point-in-time recovery history on the new production instance begins when green was created, not before.
  • Dependent systems: Review integrations that track RDS resource IDs, because AWS notes that tools referring to those IDs may need updates after switchover.

Before choosing a migration design, compare whether old and new code can use the schema during the overlap, whether the replication method carries the relevant schema and data changes, how it performs under realistic writes, what happens to post-cutover writes during rollback, which recovery points are available, and what downtime the switchover requires. The answers vary by platform, so validate them against its documentation and your workload.
