Three Molecules Become New Targets for Astronomers Searching for Life’s Building Blocks

Laboratory experiments have put three nitrogen-bearing molecules—diazene, ammonium cyanide and methyl cyanamide—on the list of potential targets for future astronomical searches. Researchers formed them while irradiating hydrogen-cyanide ice analogues with energetic electrons. They have not detected these three molecules in space, and the result is not evidence that life exists beyond Earth.

Which molecules are new search targets?

The study identifies diazene (HNNH), ammonium cyanide (NH₄CN) and methyl cyanamide (CH₃NHCN) as candidates for future astronomical searches. The authors reported that these molecules had not been detected astronomically at the time of publication. “New targets” means astronomers could look for them; it does not mean a telescope has found them.

There is a chemical distinction worth noting: diazene has no cyano (–CN) group, so it is not a nitrile. The three are more accurately described together as nitrogen-bearing species, rather than as three nitrile molecules.

What did the experiment actually do?

Jia Wang and coauthors made low-temperature ice analogues from hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and irradiated them with energetic electrons. In interstellar space, galactic cosmic rays can interact with ice grains and generate secondary electrons. The laboratory electrons served as a proxy for that processing, allowing the team to study chemistry that may occur in HCN-rich ice.

The paper says its irradiation conditions correspond to (3.0 ± 0.5) × 10⁷ years of galactic-cosmic-ray exposure. That figure is a model-based equivalence used to represent an evolved molecular-cloud stage—not a measured age or exposure duration for any particular cloud.

The researchers used complementary analytical methods: vacuum-ultraviolet photoionization reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PI-ReTOF-MS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS). The paper reports ammonia, diazene, methylamine, ammonium cyanide, ethanimine, isocyanogen, cyanamide, iminoacetonitrile, N-cyanomethanimine and methyl cyanamide. These compounds were identified through several detection routes and analytical stages; the paper does not say every molecule was detected by every instrument.

Were the molecules found in space?

No. The reported formation and identification took place in laboratory ice analogues. The three proposed targets remain candidates for future astronomical searches, not confirmed detections in an interstellar cloud or elsewhere beyond Earth.

A telescope detection would be a separate result: astronomers would need to identify evidence for a molecule in an astronomical source. The laboratory study instead gives astrochemical models and observers experimental evidence that the named compounds can form under simulated energetic processing of HCN-rich ice.

Why does this matter for prebiotic chemistry?

Nitriles can take part in chemical pathways leading to amino acids and nucleobases. By showing that several nitrogen-bearing compounds—including the three proposed search targets—can arise in processed HCN ice analogues, the experiment adds constraints on possible chemistry in interstellar ice and points to molecules astronomers may investigate.

That is a result about chemistry, not biology. The work does not show that the compounds produced life, that life formed in space, or that life exists elsewhere. Finding a molecule relevant to prebiotic chemistry would not, by itself, establish any of those claims.

What the authors and commentators said

Chemistry World quoted coauthor Ralf Kaiser, an astrochemist at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, saying that “the reactions we are investigating have a wide application beyond our solar system.” The statement concerns the potential relevance of the chemistry; it is not a claim that life is widespread.

The same report attributed to astrochemist Cornelia Meinert the view that performing experiments at interstellar temperatures is a “huge advantage of this ionisation strategy.” She noted that at higher temperatures radicals can move more readily, potentially opening reaction pathways that are less representative of interstellar conditions.

The study and its limits

The primary paper, by Jia Wang and coauthors, is “Abiotic formation of nitrile precursors to amino acids and nucleobases in interstellar ice analogues,” published in Chemical Science 17 (2026), pages 4966–4977. It appeared online on 5 January 2026 and in the issue dated 11 March 2026. Its central contribution is experimental evidence for compounds formed in a laboratory simulation, alongside three suggestions for future astronomical searches—not a report of a space-based detection.
