Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →BlackBox downloads usually fail for one of four different reasons: the PS5 firmware cannot accept the file type, a third-party source is unavailable, a transfer has stalled, or the destination USB drive was remounted with a different identity. Check those in that order. BlackBox 1.12.0 supports PS5 .pkg downloads only on firmware 11.60 and earlier; systems from 12.00 through 13.60 can still download .exfat and .ffpfsc files, but not PS5 .pkg files. That restriction is not a Wi-Fi fault.
The steps below separate compatibility, source, network, and storage problems so you can apply the fix that matches the symptom instead of repeatedly restarting the same failed job.

First identify which part is failing
BlackBox is a homebrew storefront and download manager for PS5 consoles. Its own application updates come from the project, while catalogue metadata and downloadable game files come from third-party sources; the project repository does not host those game files. Consequently, a BlackBox error does not automatically mean the application, your internet connection, or the PS5 itself is broken.
Look at the exact item and stage that fails:
- PS5
.pkgitem rejected immediately: check firmware before changing network settings. - One host or mirror will not start: treat it as a source or server problem until another source succeeds.
- Progress stops at zero or freezes during preparation: update BlackBox, retry once, and let destination-file preparation complete.
- “Reconnect the original target drive” appears: the queued job may be tied to an earlier USB mount identity.
- The normal PlayStation Store shows the error: use Sony’s Store troubleshooting path; BlackBox fixes do not apply.
Record the firmware version, file extension, selected source, target (internal M.2 or external USB), and whether the drive was unplugged or the console rebooted. Those five facts determine the correct branch.

Also note whether the failure is immediate or happens after some data has transferred. An immediate refusal usually indicates a format or catalogue gate. A transfer that begins and then stops points more often to the host, a connection timeout, or a target that disappeared. This distinction prevents you from repeatedly changing settings that cannot affect the actual cause.
Firmware and file-format compatibility
BlackBox 1.12.0 automatically detects the console firmware and corrected support for both internal M.2 and external USB storage. Its release notes define the current PS5 file-format boundary as follows:
| PS5 firmware | PS5 .pkg downloads |
.exfat and .ffpfsc downloads |
What a failure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11.60 or earlier | Supported by BlackBox 1.12.0 | Supported | A failure is more likely to involve the source, connection, queue, or target drive. |
| 12.00 through 13.60 | Not supported | Supported without the .pkg restriction described in the release notes |
A PS5 .pkg failure is a compatibility limitation, not proof of an internet outage. |
| Outside the ranges stated in the 1.12.0 notes | Not stated | Not stated | Do not infer support; check the release notes for the exact build and firmware. |
If your console is between 12.00 and 13.60, switching DNS servers, rebooting the router, or reconnecting a USB cable cannot make a PS5 .pkg download supported. Choose an available .exfat or .ffpfsc file when the catalogue offers one, or use a title and format that the installed firmware supports. Do not downgrade or alter firmware based on an assumption that a network tweak will bypass this gate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the extension shown for the specific catalogue row, not just the title name. The same game entry may expose more than one format or host. A supported extension on a supported firmware still needs a working source and a stable destination, so passing this first gate does not guarantee completion.
Update BlackBox before testing a server
Install the newest BlackBox build available for your console before diagnosing an outage. Version 1.12.0 reports fixes for Vikingfile and Archive.org download handling, Torbox and Archive.org login and registration problems, and storage detection. Earlier release notes also document corrections for Viking link capture, changing mirror domains, multi-connection behavior, and invalid catalogue errors. A failure seen on an old build can therefore be an already-fixed client defect.
After updating, close and relaunch BlackBox so the automatic firmware and storage detection runs again. Confirm that the intended internal M.2 or external USB target is visible, then open the item again rather than blindly resuming a job created by an older build. Keep the old queue entry only long enough to identify its error; a fresh job is safer when the queue may contain stale source or mount data.
When checking a release, match the version running on the PS5 with the version whose notes describe the fix. A catalogue refresh alone does not update the downloader. If the application itself cannot update, that is a separate client-installation problem; do not assume that a failed game transfer proves the update was applied.

Test whether the problem is isolated to one source
Select one source or format row and try it once. If a different row for the same item starts normally, your PS5 and local connection are probably functional and the first source is the limiting factor. Leave the working source selected instead of repeatedly hammering the failed mirror.
BlackBox 1.12.0 says Vikingfile and Archive.org download issues were resolved, but a host can still have a temporary outage, a changed link, or a rate limit. Treat the release note as a reason to update, not as a guarantee that every third-party file is online at every moment.
A useful comparison is to keep the firmware, target, and title fixed while changing only the source row. If one host fails and another begins, that controlled test is stronger evidence than a general browser test. Conversely, if unrelated items from several hosts all fail, investigate the application, network, or storage path before blaming one listing.
Handle Vikingfile’s first-attempt behavior
The 1.12.0 notes warn that Viking may not start on the first attempt. If the request produces no transfer, exit the browser, relaunch the relevant BlackBox flow, and try again. This documented retry is different from repeatedly pausing a job that is already preparing its destination file.

Check authentication separately
If Torbox or Archive.org asks for registration or login, complete that step and retry after the account state is accepted. A login failure is not evidence that the selected game file is incompatible. Conversely, a successful login does not prove that a particular mirror has a usable file; test the individual source row.
Recognize catalogue errors
An invalid catalogue message, a missing mirror, or a link that opens but never returns a payload points toward metadata or source handling. Update first, then retry the item from the catalogue. If only one listing fails while unrelated items from another source download, report or avoid that listing rather than changing PS5 network settings.
Fix transfers that stop at zero or stall
BlackBox 1.0.8 introduced behavior specifically aimed at slow or unstable hosts: a stalled transfer can retry with fewer connections, the payload remains alive during a download, and the timeout tolerates slow hosts. Those changes make a stalled transfer recoverable, but they do not remove the need for a stable source and target.
- Update the application. Do this before changing router or DNS settings.
- Choose one source and one format row. Multiple simultaneous attempts make it harder to tell whether the host or the client is failing.
- Start a fresh attempt and watch the preparation phase. BlackBox may create or reserve the destination file before visible payload progress appears.
- Do not pause, cancel, or unplug the target during preparation. Interrupting that phase can leave a queue entry tied to an incomplete destination.
- Allow a slow host time to respond. The newer timeout behavior is designed to tolerate slow servers; an apparent zero can be negotiation rather than a dead transfer.
- If the transfer remains motionless, retry once. The client may reduce its connection count after detecting a stall. A second failure with the same source should be treated as source-specific.
- Try a different source row. Success from another host confirms that the original source, not your PS5 link, was the bottleneck.
A normal network test can show that the console is online while a particular file host is unreachable. Conversely, a browser that loads a page does not prove that the long-running payload connection is healthy. Use the result of a second source and a small, known-good item as the practical distinction.
Avoid changing several variables at once. Keep the same target while trying another host, then keep the host while testing another target. This makes it possible to tell whether a retry succeeded because the server recovered, the queue was recreated, or the USB path became stable.
Resolve “reconnect the original target drive”
A documented GitHub issue reports the exact message even when the PS5 still detects the USB drive. A contributor’s technical analysis says BlackBox/Orbit records the mount’s device and inode values for a queued job and requires an exact match when it resumes. A USB remount after unplugging, rebooting, or a brief USB drop can change the device value, so the queue no longer recognizes the drive as the same target. This is a likely cause documented by a contributor, not an official guarantee that every occurrence has that explanation.
Recovery sequence
- Reconnect the same physical drive to the same PS5. Use the same USB port where practical and wait until the console has fully mounted the drive before opening the job.
- Do not create another mount event while preparing. Avoid unplugging the cable, rebooting, or switching ports while BlackBox is creating the destination file.
- Update BlackBox. Storage detection and internal M.2/external USB handling were corrected in 1.12.0.
- Retry only after the drive is stable. If the original queue entry still reports the identity error, stop using that entry rather than repeating it indefinitely.
- Create a fresh download job. A new job can bind to the drive’s current mount identity instead of the stale value saved before the remount.
- Test another cable or drive if the error returns. Repeated drops suggest a physical or power problem. A known-good external SSD or hard drive, formatted for the supported exFAT workflow, is a useful control test.
Internal M.2 storage is also a supported target in the 1.12.0 release notes. If an internal target works while the external device repeatedly disappears, the comparison points to the USB path, enclosure, cable, or drive rather than firmware compatibility. Do not promise that replacing a drive will enable a forbidden .pkg format; storage stability and firmware support are separate conditions.
Do not move a partially prepared job between consoles or assume that a drive with the same name is the same mount. The recorded identity is tied to the mounted device, so preserving the physical connection and creating a new job after a remount is safer than trying to force an old queue item to resume.

When the failure is the ordinary PlayStation Store
BlackBox troubleshooting does not apply to a purchase or update downloaded through the standard PlayStation Store. For that case, Sony’s guidance is to pause and resume the download first. If it fails again, cancel and delete the item, then start it again. Check the PlayStation service-status page for alerts; Sony advises waiting until an affected service is running before retrying.
Also install the latest PS5 system software, confirm adequate free storage, and run the built-in connection test at Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. If ordinary downloads remain broken, start the console in Safe Mode and use Clear Cache and Rebuild Database as Sony’s troubleshooting sequence directs. These steps address Store delivery, system state, and database issues; they cannot change BlackBox’s firmware-format rules or repair a third-party mirror.
Storage and connection practices that prevent repeat failures
- Keep the target drive connected and mounted for the entire preparation and transfer process.
- Use a stable external USB 3.0 SSD or hard drive with an exFAT workflow supported by the PS5 setup; choose a known-good cable and avoid loose hubs.
- Leave enough free space for the destination file and its temporary preparation needs.
- Do not switch the target between ports or consoles while a queued job is active.
- Update BlackBox before interpreting a new source error, because mirror, login, connection-count, and storage fixes are delivered in releases.
- When comparing causes, change one variable at a time: keep the target and firmware fixed while trying another source, then keep the source fixed while testing another target.
The practical rule is simple: verify the firmware/file extension first, then the BlackBox version, then the source, then the connection behavior, and finally the target-drive identity. That order prevents a permanent compatibility limitation from being mistaken for a temporary outage and prevents a stale USB queue entry from being “fixed” with unrelated network changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is BlackBox not downloading a PS5 PKG on my console?
Check firmware first. BlackBox 1.12.0 supports PS5 .pkg downloads on firmware 11.60 and earlier. On firmware 12.00 through 13.60, .pkg downloads are not supported, although .exfat and .ffpfsc files can still be downloaded. A router reset or DNS change cannot bypass that format restriction.
Are BlackBox servers down?
BlackBox uses third-party hosts for catalogue files, so there is no single server that controls every download. Try another source row for the same item. If one mirror works, the problem is probably source-specific. Update to 1.12.0, which includes Vikingfile and Archive.org handling fixes, before treating a failure as an outage.
Why does Vikingfile not start on the first try?
The 1.12.0 release notes document this behavior. Exit the browser, relaunch the BlackBox flow, and retry once. If another source starts normally, continue with that source instead of repeatedly retrying the same Viking link.
Why does my download stay at zero?
Zero progress can be the destination-file preparation or connection-negotiation stage. Use the current build, select one source row, and wait without pausing, cancelling, or unplugging the target. BlackBox 1.0.8 added fewer-connection retries and longer tolerance for slow hosts. If a second attempt remains motionless, try another source.
What does “reconnect the original target drive” mean?
A documented likely cause is that the queued job saved the USB mount’s device and inode values. Unplugging, rebooting, changing ports, or a brief USB drop can remount the drive with a different device value even though the PS5 still sees it. Reconnect the same drive, let it mount fully, update BlackBox, and create a fresh job if the old entry remains invalid.
Can I use internal M.2 storage instead of USB?
Yes. BlackBox 1.12.0 corrected handling for both internal M.2 and external USB targets. If an internal target succeeds while an external drive repeatedly disappears, investigate the USB cable, enclosure, hub, or drive. Changing targets does not add .pkg support on firmware where that format is prohibited.
Which external drive should I use?
Use a stable PS5-compatible external USB 3.0 SSD or hard drive in the supported exFAT workflow, with a known-good cable and enough free space for preparation and the completed file. A reliable target can prevent disconnect and remount failures, but it cannot fix a third-party host outage or a firmware-format limitation.
What if the error is from the normal PlayStation Store?
Use Sony’s separate procedure: pause and resume, then cancel and delete the item if needed; check PlayStation service status, install the latest system software, verify free storage, test the connection under Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection, and use Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database when directed. BlackBox source and mount fixes do not apply to Store downloads.
The Bottom Line
Start with the firmware and extension: 11.60 and earlier support PS5 .pkg downloads in BlackBox 1.12.0, while 12.00–13.60 require .exfat or .ffpfsc. Then update BlackBox, test a second source, allow preparation to finish, and keep the target mounted. If the original-drive message follows a USB remount, reconnect the same device and create a fresh job. Use Sony’s own status, network, storage, and Safe Mode steps only for ordinary PlayStation Store failures.
