For a smoother first run in Black Myth: Wukong, keep attacks short enough to leave stamina for dodging, spend Focus only when an enemy is exposed, and use spells to solve a specific problem rather than whenever they are ready. Activate Keeper’s Shrines as you find them, and explore side paths when you want extra Sparks, Spirits, or optional rewards. There is no single required early build: you can refund skill points and adapt as you learn what suits you.
What should you do first in Black Myth: Wukong?
Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and based on Journey to the West. Early on, focus on learning enemy responses rather than trying to maximize damage in every opening. A reliable loop is to approach, attack briefly, watch the enemy’s response, dodge or wait it out, and punish the recovery. That habit remains useful as fights become more demanding.

- Notice which enemy groups consume healing on the way to a boss. If you have to retry, adjust the route or your approach instead of repeating it blindly.
- Spend early Sparks on upgrades that address a real need, such as stamina or dependable basic staff options.
- Explore side paths when you are ready, but do not treat every optional fight as a required first-hour task.
How do you manage stamina and Focus?
Leave enough stamina to respond
Attacks and dodges draw on practical stamina capacity. If you commit to a long attack string and exhaust it, you may be unable to dodge when the enemy retaliates. Use short, controlled combinations, then watch what the opponent does. Button-mashing can turn an apparent damage opportunity into a missed defense.

Spend Focus into a real opening
Focus supports stronger heavy or varied attacks, but timing matters more than spending it as soon as it is available. Look for a confirmed recovery, stagger, or opening created by a spell, then use Focus while the enemy is vulnerable. Avoid committing it into an active attack or phase change. These are general tactics, not a guarantee that every boss has the same opening.
How do the stances work, and which should you try?
The game has three Staff Stances. Think of them as different ways to manage attack commitment, distance, and defense—not as a single ranking that every player must follow.

Epic Games Store’s guide favors Thrust for versatility, but that is its recommendation, not an objective rule. Start with the style that feels most intuitive, then test another when a fight exposes a weakness in your approach. Skills can be refunded, so early experimentation need not lock you into a build.

Sparks unlock skill nodes. Epic’s guide says you earn them by leveling and by interacting with a Meditation Spot for the first time. The Foundation tree includes Stamina, Martial Arts, and Survival areas. For a broadly useful start, consider stamina-related skills, survival improvements, or staff options that support the attacks you actually use. Epic specifically recommends stamina-related skills and Mobile Spin; treat that ranking as editorial advice rather than a developer-mandated order.

Choose based on what is giving you trouble: if you often run out of stamina, prioritize stamina; if you need more resilience, consider survival; if a staff technique is central to your play, invest there. A specialized upgrade makes more sense once you know what situation you want it to improve.
To change your mind, use the Self-Advance menu to refund an individual skill or all points, as documented in the Epic Games Store skills guide. That flexibility makes trying a different stance or skill focus a practical option, not a costly mistake.

When should you use spells?
Spells consume mana, so treat them as limited tools. Each is most useful when it has a clear job in your plan: create an opening, interrupt a dangerous sequence, or help you survive one.
- Immobilize (Mysticism) freezes an enemy. Use it when you are close enough to take advantage of the pause.
- Rock Solid (Alteration) is a timed counter: activating it as an attack lands can stagger the enemy.
- Cloud Step is another Alteration option; consider defensive tools when an enemy’s sequence is difficult to handle directly.
- Ring of Fire belongs to Mysticism, while A Pluck of Many belongs to Strand. Match spell choices to the situation and your available mana.
If a boss attempt is still teaching you the enemy’s pattern, preserving mana can be more useful than casting just because a spell is ready. Once you recognize a dangerous sequence or a reliable opening, choose a spell with that purpose in mind. The Epic guide describes the spell categories and individual effects; tactical timing will still depend on the encounter.

Should you explore before fighting the boss?
Explore when the detour may give you something useful or when you want a better understanding of the area. Side routes can lead to Yaoguai Chiefs and Spirits, whose abilities provide powerful temporary attacks, as well as Meditation Spots that award Sparks. Optional encounters can be challenging, though, and the beginner guidance cautions against treating every one as compulsory before your first boss attempt.
Use shrines to make exploration manageable
Activate Keeper’s Shrines and learn the route from one to the next. Pay attention to shortcuts and to the groups that drain your healing. This turns a return trip into a chance to improve your path and resource use, rather than simply repeating the same approach.
Chapter 1 optional route: the three bells
Chapter-specific, optional guidance: Xbox Wire recommends finding all three bells in Chapter 1 to unlock a hidden area with the Fireproof Mantle, which grants burn immunity. This is not required to progress through the game. If you are pursuing Chapter 1 completion, the Wandering Wight and bell route have a timing relationship; consult a spoiler-light route before advancing past that sequence if you want to avoid missing the reward. Can you change your build later?
Yes. Epic’s guide documents refunds for an individual skill or all points through Self-Advance. That means early choices are experiments rather than permanent commitments: try the stance and skills that suit your current approach, then reallocate if a recurring problem calls for a different tool.
Controls and availability can vary by platform. For example, some examples in the Epic guide use PC keyboard keys; follow the equivalent on-screen prompts for your platform rather than treating those keys as universal. The official Steam announcements and patch notes include dated historical updates, but they do not establish one current build number across all platforms.
