BitGo is an institutional digital-asset infrastructure company, not a cryptocurrency or a consumer wallet brand. Its custody, settlement and trading connections—and recent announcements involving tokenized securities, sovereign bonds and a regulated trust-bank charter—show how digital assets can be integrated into financial workflows. They are evidence of specific products and partnerships, not proof that traditional finance broadly has adopted crypto or that BitGo’s services are risk-free.
What BitGo does
Founded in 2013, BitGo describes itself as a provider of digital-asset infrastructure for institutional clients. Its services include custody and wallets, trading, over-the-counter services, staking, financing and settlement. The company also presents its Go Network and stablecoin-as-a-service offering as parts of that infrastructure. This is BitGo’s description of its business; the range of services available can depend on the relevant legal entity, location and client eligibility.

The distinction matters: custody is about safeguarding assets and controlling access to them, while trading connects clients to buyers, sellers or liquidity venues. A firm may use one provider’s custody while a separate entity acts as the trading counterparty. BitGo’s legal disclosures identify BitGo Prime as the counterparty for digital-asset trades, rather than treating every service as a function of its trust-bank entities.
What the national trust-bank charter means
BitGo announced in December 2025 that the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) had approved conversion of its trust company to BitGo Bank & Trust, National Association. In an announcement dated January 29, 2026, BitGo said it had received final OCC approval; the company also identified January 22, 2026, as the date of its New York Stock Exchange listing. BitGo’s licensing materials describe the national bank as authorized to exercise fiduciary and custodial powers.

That is a meaningful regulatory development for custody, but it should be described narrowly. A national trust-bank charter is not the same as saying that every BitGo product is federally endorsed, or that the entity offers ordinary insured bank deposits. BitGo says the charter covers custody and safekeeping and certain related services. Its legal disclosures also state that BitGo Bank & Trust and BitGo New York Trust Company are not engaged in offering, selling, trading or lending securities or digital assets. Trading and settlement are separately described, and BitGo says those services are not yet offered to New York residents.
For customers, the useful question is not simply whether a provider “is a bank.” It is which legal entity provides the specific service, what powers it has, where that service is available, and which entity is responsible for trading or settlement.

How BitGo describes its custody controls
BitGo’s product pages describe more than one key-management arrangement, so “BitGo custody” does not refer to a single setup. Its qualified-custody materials describe multisignature and multi-party computation (MPC) options. Its custodial-wallet page describes a particular wallet model in which BitGo says it holds all three keys offline in cold storage.

The same custodial-wallet description lists transaction verification checks, address whitelisting, velocity controls and user permissions. These controls can help organizations govern who may initiate or approve activity and where assets may be sent. They are company product descriptions, not an independent security assessment; the materials cited here do not establish how the controls perform in practice or remove the risks of custody.

BitGo’s current custodial-wallet page displays “1,700+” supported assets and “$3 trillion” in lifetime transactions. Those figures are undated page claims accessed October 7, 2026; the transaction figure is lifetime, not annual volume, and neither figure is independently verified in the materials cited here. They should not be read as measures of market-wide adoption.
Three announced connections to financial products and trading
Recent BitGo announcements illustrate several ways custody infrastructure can connect to tokenized assets and trading access. They document what BitGo and the named parties announced, rather than independently proving broad client uptake or the performance of the arrangements.

YLDS: qualified custody for a tokenized security
On June 29, 2026, BitGo said BitGo Bank & Trust had added qualified-custody support for YLDS. The announcement identifies YLDS as an SEC-registered, yield-bearing security issued by Figure Certificate Company and describes it as a tokenized face-amount certificate. It says the product accrues daily at SOFR minus 35 basis points and offers monthly redemption options, subject to its offering documents. Those are product terms as described by the announcement—not a guaranteed return, an endorsement by BitGo or the SEC, or a substitute for reviewing the offering documents.
USDM1: custody and off-exchange settlement
On July 17, 2026, BitGo said it would provide qualified custody and off-exchange settlement for USDM1. The announcement describes USDM1 as a U.S.-dollar-denominated secured sovereign bond issued onchain by the Republic of the Marshall Islands and backed one-to-one by U.S. Treasuries. Under the announced arrangement, institutional clients can hold the asset in segregated custody and use it for collateral and settlement on connected venues. The description is attributable to the announcement; it does not by itself establish the product’s suitability, liquidity or risks for any particular client.

Gate US: venue access while assets remain in custody
On July 28, 2026, BitGo announced that Gate US had joined Go Network for off-exchange settlement. The company said mutual institutional clients could access Gate US liquidity while assets remained in BitGo Bank & Trust custody. In this model, custody and access to a trading venue are connected but distinct functions. The announcement does not say that every client or asset is eligible.

Taken together, the examples show BitGo building institutional connections between custody, tokenized financial products and trading liquidity. They make “digital assets entering mainstream finance” concrete as a set of regulated and finance-facing workflows. They do not establish that banks or the wider financial sector have adopted these services at scale: the cited materials provide company announcements, not an independent adoption rate or a regulator-published measure of market penetration.
BitGo CEO and co-founder Mike Belshe described the company’s December 12, 2025 charter announcement as “setting the new standard for transparency, security, and regulatory clarity.” That is Belshe’s and the company’s view, not an independent assessment of BitGo or the broader market.

Questions institutional customers should resolve
A charter or product announcement is only one part of assessing an institutional provider. Before relying on a service, organizations should establish the details that apply to their own assets and jurisdiction.
Quick Recap
- Entity and location: Identify the legal entity providing custody, trading or settlement, and confirm that the service is available to the customer in its jurisdiction.
- Key control and approvals: Determine whether the arrangement is custodial, multisig or MPC; who controls the keys; and how transaction approvals, whitelists, user permissions and withdrawal limits work.
- Segregation and insurance: Confirm how assets are held and segregated, which entity holds them, and what any insurance actually covers. BitGo’s bank-solutions page advertises up to $250 million of insurance, a company claim whose terms, eligibility and coverage should be examined rather than treated as blanket protection.
- Trading and settlement: Identify the trading counterparty, connected venues, eligible assets and collateral arrangements, and distinguish those services from custody.
- Evidence behind claims: Separate regulatory authorizations and dated announcements from promotional statements, and distinguish a product being announced or offered from evidence of adoption, security performance or investment outcome.
