Will Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Work With Pokémon HOME? What’s Announced for October 2026

Yes—Nintendo Switch versions of Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version are planned to connect with Pokémon HOME in October 2026. The Pokémon Company announced the connection alongside HOME version 4.1.0, but Nintendo’s update-history page still lists version 4.0.0, released April 1, 2026, as its latest version. The exact 4.1.0 release date and whether it is live are not confirmed by the official sources reviewed here. The Pokémon Company’s August 13, 2026 announcement describes the planned features.

Can you transfer Pokémon between FireRed, LeafGreen, and HOME?

The announced connection moves Pokémon from either Switch game into Pokémon HOME. It is one-way: Pokémon sent to HOME cannot return to FireRed or LeafGreen, and Pokémon from other games cannot be moved into either title. The Pokémon Company stated on August 13, 2026: “Once a Pokémon from Pokémon FireRed Version or Pokémon LeafGreen Version is moved into Pokémon HOME, it will be unable to return to Pokémon FireRed Version or Pokémon LeafGreen Version.”

That makes the transfer a permanent choice for a Pokémon you want to keep using in the original game. HOME’s general transfer guidance also says Pokémon can only be moved to games in which they appear, so do not assume every Pokémon in HOME can be sent to every compatible game. The available official information does not give a complete species-by-species destination list for this connection. Pokémon HOME’s transfer guide explains the general restriction.

Does completing the Pokédex require moving Pokémon?

No. Once HOME connects to one of the games, Pokémon registered in that game’s Pokédex are registered in HOME. You do not have to transfer those Pokémon to get the HOME Pokédex registration.

What else is included in the announced update?

Postgame ticket encounters

After defeating the Elite Four and entering the Hall of Fame, the Mystic Ticket and Aurora Ticket are automatically added to Key Items. The Mystic Ticket leads to encounters with Lugia and Ho-Oh; the Aurora Ticket leads to Deoxys.

More storage for HOME Premium

The Pokémon Company says version 4.1.0 will raise Pokémon HOME Premium storage from 6,000 to up to 9,000 Pokémon. The announcement says the Premium price will not change. It does not establish that a Premium subscription is required to connect FireRed or LeafGreen to HOME.

Is version 4.1.0 live, and how can you check?

The official information cited here confirms an October 2026 plan, not a specific rollout date or live status. Nintendo’s HOME update-history page lists version 4.0.0, released April 1, 2026, as the latest version on that page. For current status, check HOME’s version and update availability on your Switch rather than relying on the announced month alone.

  1. From the Switch HOME Menu, highlight Pokémon HOME and press the + button.
  2. Select Software Update, then choose Via the Internet.
  3. Open HOME after the update completes and check its version information. The announced connection should not be treated as available until the applicable update has rolled out.

Which FireRed and LeafGreen versions can you buy?

The announced compatibility concerns the Nintendo Switch versions of the games. Nintendo says they will be digital-only, with no physical releases. The US English FireRed Nintendo eShop listing gives the download size as 39 MB and lists Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility. Language versions are separate editions rather than options selectable inside the game, so check the language before buying.

Nintendo’s US FireRed listing is specific to the English-language US edition; its size and availability details should not be generalized to other regional or language editions. Nintendo’s FireRed and LeafGreen FAQ addresses the digital release and HOME compatibility. The available information does not support a gameplay recommendation between the two editions.
