Who is Rohit Prasad?
Boston Dynamics describes Prasad as an AI leader with experience turning research into products. According to the company’s announcement, he was Amazon’s Senior Vice President and Head Scientist for Alexa and Artificial General Intelligence. Boston Dynamics credits him with helping build Alexa from its early days and leading development of Amazon Nova foundation models for enterprise use.

The company also says Prasad spent nearly 14 years at Raytheon BBN Technologies, leading machine-learning research and applications. These career details are Boston Dynamics’ account of its incoming CEO’s background.
When does he become CEO, and what about the board?
Prasad’s effective start date is October 7, 2026, the day after Boston Dynamics announced the appointment. The announcement says he is expected to join the board only after the relevant approval process; it does not say that he has already joined.

Why did Boston Dynamics appoint him?
The company says the appointment supports its effort to combine AI and robotics and commercialize intelligent systems for industrial, enterprise, and other real-world environments. It says Prasad will focus on productizing systems intended to improve safety, productivity, and operational efficiency. Those are strategic goals, not independently established outcomes.
Boston Dynamics is part of Hyundai Motor Group, and the leadership announcement connects the company’s robotics work with Hyundai’s manufacturing, logistics, and mobility capabilities. Board chair Jaehoon Chang, who is also Hyundai Motor Group vice chair, said: “Boston Dynamics’ industry-leading robotics, Rohit’s proven ability to turn AI into products at global scale, and Hyundai Motor Group’s modern manufacturing, logistics, and mobility capabilities give us a powerful foundation to build and scale Physical AI. What does the appointment mean for Atlas?
Atlas is Boston Dynamics’ electric humanoid platform, which remains in development. The company’s September 2026 update says Atlas was training in automotive manufacturing environments at the Robotics Metaplant Application Center at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, including logistics and sequencing parts for assembly. Component assembly is a later application targeted for 2030, according to that update.

Boston Dynamics has also announced plans to expand Atlas deployment across Hyundai and Kia plants, including a planned deployment of 25,000 units, and to establish a U.S. production facility with planned annual capacity of 30,000 robots. These are announced plans, not completed deployments or guaranteed production results. The materials describe Atlas as an industrial platform, not a consumer robot available for individual purchase.
How Atlas fits alongside Spot and Stretch
Boston Dynamics’ portfolio includes three robots aimed at different tasks and at different stages of maturity:
