Short answer: Bitdefender and Norton are both strong consumer antivirus choices in 2026. In AV-TEST’s July–August Windows 11 evaluation, Bitdefender Total Security and Norton 360 each received the maximum 6/6/6 ratings for protection, performance and usability. Choose Bitdefender Total Security if you want the Bitdefender suite represented by consistently strong laboratory results; choose Norton Antivirus Plus or Norton 360 if Norton’s product ecosystem and the particular bundle’s features suit you better. No single test proves that either brand is universally safer.
Bitdefender vs Norton at a glance
The products are not identical editions, and the laboratories tested them in different cycles. The table therefore identifies the exact products and reports rather than treating every Bitdefender or Norton plan as interchangeable.

Independent laboratories answer different questions. AV-TEST’s consumer evaluation uses Windows 11 and scores protection, performance and usability separately. A perfect category result means the product met that laboratory’s criteria during that test window; it does not mean every future build, operating system or threat will behave identically.
#1 Best Overall
AV-Comparatives uses several test families. Its Malware Protection Test examines malware handling, including online and offline conditions. Its Real-World Protection Test covers threats encountered in realistic use and, as the laboratory notes, continues to assess conventional signature-based and heuristic detection alongside cloud technologies. Its Performance Test measures the effect security software has on system activities. Because the samples, dates, product builds and scoring rules differ, results from one report should not be merged into a single permanent league table.
This distinction matters when someone asks, “Is Bitdefender better than Norton?” The defensible answer is narrower: both have current high-level independent evidence, while the available reports do not establish a universal winner for every computer and plan.
Protection: how Bitdefender and Norton compare
AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 Windows 11 cycle
Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 and Norton 360 26.6/26.7 each earned 6 for protection, 6 for performance and 6 for usability. The category scores are the clearest apples-to-apples result in the supplied 2026 evidence because the products were evaluated in the same Windows 11 cycle.

They describe performance under AV-TEST’s test conditions and should be read with the test’s operating-system and date qualification.
AV-TEST’s February 2026 cycle
The February report again gave Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 and Norton 360 25.12 a 6/6/6 result. The different published totals show why product totals should not be compared as though they were a universal score across editions or months. Both still satisfied AV-TEST’s approval threshold by a wide margin.

AV-Comparatives evidence
In the September 2026 Malware Protection Test, Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 and Norton Antivirus Plus 26.8 were among the products tested. The report itself advises readers to consider price, ease of use, compatibility and support in addition to laboratory results. That is especially relevant here because the named Norton product is Antivirus Plus, while AV-TEST’s same-cycle product name is Norton 360.
Bitdefender’s March 2026 Malware Protection Test figures were 97.6% online protection, 97.6% offline protection and 99.94% overall protection, with four false positives. Those values belong to that specific March test and should not be generalized to a different release, device or future test. No equivalent Norton percentage is established in the supplied figures, so assigning Norton a number would be misleading.

The laboratory emphasizes that cloud reputation services do not replace conventional signatures and heuristics; a well-rounded comparison therefore includes more than a single cloud-blocking percentage.
False positives: the nuisance cost of aggressive blocking
A false positive occurs when security software flags a legitimate file or website as malicious. It can be less dramatic than a missed infection, but repeated false alarms interrupt work, prevent software updates or train users to click “allow” without checking.
Bitdefender recorded four false positives in AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 Malware Protection Test. That is a measured result for that test’s sample set and date. The supplied results do not state Norton’s false-positive count for a directly comparable cycle, so they cannot support a claim that Norton is quieter or noisier.
- Read the detection name and file path before restoring or allowing anything.
- Keep legitimate applications updated; old installers are more likely to be reputation-flagged.
- Submit an uncertain file to the vendor’s official analysis channel rather than disabling protection globally.
- Do not create broad exclusions for an entire downloads folder or system drive.
False-positive counts also depend on the laboratory’s corpus. A lower number in one report does not guarantee fewer prompts in your own development tools, games or business applications.

AV-TEST awarded both products 6 for performance in July–August 2026, indicating that neither caused a measurable category failure under that Windows 11 evaluation. AV-Comparatives separately listed Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 and Norton Antivirus Plus 26.3 in its April 2026 Performance Test.
Those findings support a practical conclusion: both suites are credible choices for a normal Windows 11 workload, but the exact impact on an older laptop, virtual machine, hard-disk drive or heavily synchronized development folder can differ. Scan scheduling, archive handling, browser extensions, cloud lookups and other enabled modules all affect the experience.
How to check performance on your own PC
- Record baseline boot time and the time to open the applications you use most.
- Install only one real-time antivirus product; two active engines can create conflicts and extra disk activity.
- Apply all operating-system and security-product updates before judging speed.
- Repeat the same file-copy, application-launch and sleep/wake tasks while a scan is idle and while a scan is running.
- If slowdowns appear, first change scan scheduling or exclude only a clearly trusted, narrowly defined workload. Keep real-time protection enabled while troubleshooting.
This home check is not a replacement for AV-Comparatives’ controlled test. It helps identify whether your own storage, CPU, drivers or workload changes the decision.
Usability, setup and day-to-day control
Both products received 6 for usability in AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 cycle. That is useful evidence that each product can present manageable warnings and controls under the lab’s conditions, but usability is personal. A family managing several devices may value clear account-level status, while a power user may prefer granular exclusions and scan controls.

A clean migration sequence
- Check your operating system, available storage and the number of devices you intend to cover.
- Save recovery codes, license details and any documents needed to reinstall applications.
- Uninstall the existing real-time antivirus using the operating system’s installed-apps control, then restart if requested. Do not remove built-in platform protections until the replacement is active.
- Download the installer from the chosen vendor’s official account or purchase channel, not from a pop-up advertisement.
- Sign in, enter the subscription or activation code, allow the product to update its malware definitions, and restart if prompted.
- Run the initial scan and review every detection. Quarantine uncertain items rather than approving them automatically.
- Open the privacy, notification, scan-schedule and web-protection settings. Keep real-time and automatic-update features on unless you have a specific, documented reason to change one.
If installation leaves two real-time engines active, remove the older product and restart. If a legitimate application stops working, use a narrow exception only after verifying the file’s publisher and source.
Supported devices, device counts and plan differences
“Bitdefender” and “Norton” each describe multiple consumer plans. The tests above name specific editions, not every subscription sold under the brand. Supported operating systems, device allowances and included modules must be checked on the exact plan page for your country at the time of purchase.
Do not assume that a Windows result transfers unchanged to macOS, Android, iOS or a router. Mobile products may have different detection features, and some platforms rely more heavily on built-in protections or account services. Likewise, a one-device license and a multi-device family plan can have different value even when the antivirus engine is related.
Questions to answer before paying
- Which operating systems and device types need coverage?
- How many devices are included, and can the allowance be reassigned when hardware changes?
- Does the subscription cover only antivirus, or a broader security suite?
- Are parental controls, identity monitoring, backup, password tools or VPN access included in this exact tier, or sold separately?
- Are the features available in your country and language?
Extras: compare the bundle, not just the engine
Plan extras can decide the purchase when core protection is close. Consumer suites may package a VPN, parental controls, identity monitoring, backup or password tools, but entitlement depends on the plan and geography. The supplied test results do not establish that every Bitdefender Total Security, Norton Antivirus Plus or Norton 360 subscription includes the same set or limits.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Make a feature inventory before checkout. Mark each feature as included, limited, trial-only or an additional subscription. Pay particular attention to VPN data limits, the number of identities or devices covered by monitoring, backup storage caps, parental-control platform support and whether a password manager is integrated or a separate service. A lower advertised price can be poor value if the feature you need is only in a higher tier.
Price, renewal and cancellation terms
Current first-year prices, renewal rates and cancellation terms are not established by the cited test results. They vary by country, sales channel, promotion, tax and subscription length. Treat any displayed introductory price as a time-limited offer until the checkout page states the recurring amount.
- Capture the first-year total, tax and currency before payment.
- Record the renewal date and the post-promotion rate.
- Check whether automatic renewal is enabled and how it can be turned off.
- Read the refund window and whether cancellation stops renewal immediately or merely prevents the next charge.
- Confirm that the purchased edition is the one independently tested or understand what differs.
Marketplace listings can use different package names, device counts or license durations. Verify the seller, edition and activation region before entering a code.
Which antivirus should you buy?
Choose Bitdefender Total Security when
- You want a directly tested Bitdefender suite with strong results across the cited 2026 AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives reports.
- Bitdefender’s exact plan offers the device coverage and extras you need at a price you can confirm.
- The March 2026 protection figures and the four-false-positive result are useful reference points for your decision, while you accept that they describe one test window.
Choose Norton Antivirus Plus or Norton 360 when
- You prefer Norton’s account and product ecosystem.
- The Norton edition available in your region supplies the device count, platform support and bundle features you actually require.
- You are comfortable comparing Antivirus Plus with Norton 360 rather than assuming the two editions are interchangeable.
When neither brand is automatically the right answer
If your priority is a specific mobile platform, a tightly controlled business environment, unusually old hardware or a particular parental-control or backup capability, start with that requirement. A perfect laboratory category score cannot compensate for an unsupported device, an unavailable regional feature or a renewal price outside your budget.
A decision checklist for 2026
- List every device and operating system that must be protected.
- Choose the minimum plan tier that supplies those devices and required features.
- Compare the exact first-year and recurring prices shown for your country.
- Read the renewal, refund and cancellation language before checkout.
- Check current independent-test coverage for the named edition, not merely the parent brand.
- Install one product, update it fully and observe scans and notifications during your normal workload.
- Revisit the choice when a new AV-TEST or AV-Comparatives consumer cycle appears, or when a vendor changes plan names or entitlements.
How to read future score changes
A new score should replace an old one only after checking the product version, test date, operating system, sample set and category. A small movement in a product total may reflect a changed weighting or sample rather than a meaningful change in everyday safety. Look for repeated performance across protection, false positives, system impact and usability instead of selecting a product from one headline percentage.
Also distinguish inclusion from ranking. A report that lists both vendors confirms that both were evaluated; it does not mean the listed product names have identical features or that an unreported metric is equal. Keep the edition and date beside every number you use.
Bottom line
For 2026 Windows 11 buyers, Bitdefender Total Security and Norton 360 are both validated, high-performing choices in AV-TEST’s July–August cycle, and both brands appear in AV-Comparatives’ current test families. Bitdefender has the more detailed standalone protection figures supplied here, including 97.6% online and offline protection, 99.94% overall protection and four false positives in March 2026. Norton remains a sound choice when its ecosystem, edition and plan terms better match your devices. Decide on the exact product, platform coverage, extras and recurring cost—not on the brand name or one laboratory score alone.
