Choose the control point that matches your risk. Bitdefender GravityZone AI Visibility and Control (AIVC) is primarily an endpoint discovery and risk layer: it inventories AI software installed or running on protected Windows devices. It does not itself block access or alter program permissions; administrators enforce restrictions with GravityZone Web Content Filtering, application control and endpoint-hardening features. For prompt inspection, account-level cloud visibility or controls across unmanaged devices, Microsoft Purview with Defender for Cloud Apps, Netskope One, Cisco AI Access with Umbrella, and Palo Alto Networks Prisma Browser/AI Access Security provide deeper alternatives.

What Bitdefender AI Visibility and Control actually does

Bitdefender announced GravityZone AI Visibility and Control on 23 September 2026 as an add-on to GravityZone. Its core job is discovery: finding artificial-intelligence tools on protected endpoints and presenting their risk context in the GravityZone console. This answers questions such as which AI applications are installed, which are running and where they appear in the Windows estate.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The distinction between visibility and enforcement is important. AIVC itself is not the component that blocks a website, changes an application’s permissions or inspects every prompt. Bitdefender documentation describes it as a discovery and risk layer. To stop access to a prohibited service, administrators configure Web Content Filtering; application control and endpoint-hardening controls provide additional restrictions. Bitdefender describes the workflow as gathering evidence so an administrator can decide what to allow, monitor or restrict, then acting through those adjacent GravityZone controls.

Capability boundaries

Need What AIVC provides Where enforcement occurs
Find AI software on company computers Inventory of AI software installed and running on protected Windows endpoints AIVC discovery and risk view
Block an AI website Identifies the service and supplies context for a policy decision GravityZone Web Content Filtering
Restrict a local executable Provides endpoint visibility GravityZone application control or hardening
Inspect sensitive words in a prompt Not established as an AIVC function Requires a browser, SSE, CASB or DLP control that can inspect content
Distinguish personal and corporate AI accounts Not established as an AIVC function Requires identity-aware cloud or network telemetry

AIVC is therefore a sensible starting point when your primary blind spot is unmanaged AI software on Windows endpoints and your organization already operates GravityZone. It is not a complete answer if the requirement is to stop a user from pasting regulated data into a browser session, identify whether a session uses a personal tenant, or monitor employees on unmanaged devices.

How to evaluate an alternative

Compare products on five questions rather than on a feature-count checklist. The answers reveal whether you need an endpoint add-on, a secure service edge, a cloud access broker, browser controls or several layers working together.

1. Where is activity observed?

  • Endpoint: Sees installed and running applications on managed computers, even when traffic is encrypted, but may not see activity from unmanaged devices.
  • Network or SSE: Sees destinations and sessions as traffic crosses a gateway or security service, covering more device types when traffic is routed through it.
  • Cloud API: Connects to sanctioned cloud services and can analyze audit events, identities and data movement after the service records them.
  • Browser: Can inspect the actual page, prompt and transfer operation, but coverage depends on supported browsers and managed configuration.

2. How deep must enforcement be?

Inventory-only controls answer “what is present?” Allow and block policies answer “which service may be reached?” Prompt-aware DLP answers “does this text contain personal, health or proprietary information?” Transfer controls extend the decision to uploads, downloads, clipboard actions, screen sharing and printing. A product can be excellent at one layer without replacing another.

3. Do you need account context?

A domain-only policy may treat a company tenant and a personal account alike. If policy differs by account, look for identity and session context that can distinguish corporate from personal AI use. This is particularly important when employees are allowed to use an approved enterprise assistant but not a consumer account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Which ecosystem is already deployed?

Microsoft, Netskope, Cisco and Palo Alto options deliver their strongest value when the corresponding identity, endpoint, browser, network or SSE stack is already in place. Introducing a control from a different ecosystem can add agents, routing changes, policy languages and separate alert queues.

5. What is the operational and privacy cost?

Licensing terms, regional availability and package contents vary and must be confirmed with the supplier. Budget for policy design, user communication, exception handling, DLP tuning and log retention. Prompt inspection can expose sensitive employee or customer information to security teams, so define who may view content, how long it is retained and when a metadata-only record is sufficient.

Microsoft Purview DSPM for AI and Defender for Cloud Apps

Microsoft’s combination is the most natural alternative for organizations already using Microsoft 365, Defender and Purview. Purview Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) for AI is designed to discover AI activity, protect data in prompts and govern how that data is handled. Defender for Cloud Apps adds discovery, monitoring and blocking for generative-AI applications.

What the Microsoft stack can see

  • AI applications being used in the organization, including activity surfaced through Defender for Cloud Apps.
  • User interactions, DLP-rule matches and sensitive-information findings in Activity Explorer and audit logs.
  • Data-handling events that can be investigated alongside Microsoft identity and security telemetry.

How enforcement works

Administrators can create policies to discover, monitor or block generative-AI applications. DLP rules can identify sensitive information in prompts and trigger the organization’s chosen response. Microsoft also documents Edge DLP policies and a method of blocking other browsers, which helps prevent users from bypassing controls by moving an AI session into an unmanaged browser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where it fits best

Choose this route when Microsoft identities, endpoint management, Defender and Purview are already standard. The main advantage is a connected policy and audit model rather than a standalone AI inventory. The trade-off is implementation complexity: permissions, browser management, DLP classification and licensing must be aligned before blocking is safe. If your traffic does not pass through managed browsers or supported cloud controls, coverage may be less complete than the policy diagram suggests.

Netskope One and Skylight

Netskope approaches the problem through secure service edge (SSE) visibility and data protection. Skylight monitors employee activity and is designed to distinguish personal AI instances from corporate ones. Netskope One applies inline and API-based protection, advanced DLP and real-time threat blocking.

Account-aware shadow-AI visibility

The account distinction is the differentiator for teams that permit an approved enterprise assistant but need to identify consumer use. Rather than treating every request to an AI domain as identical, the service can provide context about the instance and help security teams understand whether activity belongs to a sanctioned corporate environment or a personal account.

Guidance as well as blocking

Netskope describes controls that can guide a user toward an approved tool, such as an enterprise Copilot or ChatGPT deployment, instead of simply returning an access-denied page. That approach supports a staged rollout: observe behavior, educate users, redirect risky use and block only when the business case is clear.

Where it fits best

Netskope is a strong fit when the buyer needs coverage across managed and unmanaged environments and wants inline inspection plus API controls. Confirm traffic-steering requirements, supported applications, identity integration and the handling of encrypted sessions before committing. SSE deployment can affect routing, latency, troubleshooting ownership and privacy review.

Cisco AI Access and Umbrella

Cisco AI Access is a Secure Access SSE feature set with granular access and policy controls. Cisco documents blocking or redirecting requests to approved services, DLP and multiple enforcement points. Cisco Umbrella adds generative-AI CASB and DLP capabilities.

Service-specific policies

Umbrella documentation explains that ChatGPT can be selected directly as a destination for real-time blocking rules. This is more precise than blocking an entire category of websites when the organization has a named list of permitted or prohibited services. AI Access policies can combine access decisions with DLP responses and approved-service redirection.

Where it fits best

Choose Cisco when your organization already standardizes on Cisco networking, Umbrella or Secure Access. Existing routing, identity and security operations can reduce deployment friction. The important validation step is to map which traffic reaches the Cisco enforcement point from remote users, branch offices, mobile devices and unmanaged equipment. A policy cannot act on a session it never sees.

Palo Alto Networks Prisma Browser and AI Access Security

Palo Alto’s controls are the clearest fit when prompt-level browser enforcement is the requirement. GenAI Prompt Control supports ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and embedded AI widgets.

Selective prompt blocking

Administrators can configure a rule to block selectively when prompt text matches a DLP profile, such as personally identifiable information, protected health information or proprietary content. This allows a permitted AI service to remain available for low-risk work while sensitive submissions are stopped or handled according to policy.

Broader browser and transfer telemetry

Palo Alto documents metrics for allowed and blocked generative-AI applications and monitoring of data transfers, including uploads, downloads, clipboard operations, screen sharing and printing. Those events matter when the risk is not only what a user types but also what they copy into an assistant or retrieve from it.

Where it fits best

Use this option when managed-browser control and content-level decisions are more important than endpoint application inventory. Validate browser support, user identity mapping, policy performance and how exceptions are approved. Prompt inspection can produce sensitive records, so establish access controls and retention rules before enabling broad logging.

A practical rollout plan

1. Define permitted work before selecting a block action

List the tasks employees need: drafting, coding, translation, analysis, customer support or internal search. Mark which tasks may use public services, which require an enterprise tenant and which are prohibited. A blanket “block AI” rule often drives unsanctioned workarounds without reducing data risk.

2. Establish a baseline in monitor-only mode

Collect application, destination, user, account and data-transfer events for a defined pilot period. Separate installed software from active use. Record the device population and traffic paths so an apparent absence of activity is not mistaken for proof that no one is using a service.

3. Map each risk to an observation point

  • Use endpoint discovery for locally installed or running tools.
  • Use SSE or CASB telemetry for destinations, sessions and cloud accounts.
  • Use managed-browser controls for prompt and clipboard inspection.
  • Use cloud audit and DLP records for sanctioned applications integrated with your identity platform.

4. Create data classifications and DLP tests

Start with a small set of high-confidence classes, such as government identifiers, payment data, health information and proprietary source code. Test realistic prompts, attachments, copy-and-paste events and generated downloads. Measure false positives before enabling automatic blocking.

5. Separate policy outcomes

Use different actions for different risks: allow, warn, redirect to an approved tenant, require a business justification, quarantine a transfer or block. A user guidance page is useful for low-severity violations; high-confidence exposure of regulated data may justify an immediate block and security alert.

7. Roll out in stages

  1. Monitor activity and publish the acceptable-use policy.
  2. Warn users and direct them to approved services.
  3. Block only named prohibited applications or high-confidence sensitive-data matches.
  4. Expand coverage after reviewing missed events, false positives and help-desk volume.

8. Operate the controls continuously

Review newly discovered AI applications, policy exceptions, DLP matches and blocked transfers. Remove temporary exceptions, update approved-service lists and verify that browser, SSE and endpoint agents remain healthy after platform changes.

Common failure modes and fixes

“We found no AI use, so nobody is using it”

The sensor may cover only protected Windows endpoints or only traffic routed through a gateway. Check agent health, remote-device coverage, browser paths and unmanaged-device access before drawing that conclusion.

“Blocking the domain did not stop data leakage”

Users may reach another service, use a mobile device or submit data through an embedded widget. Add application discovery, identity context and prompt or transfer DLP where the risk requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The policy blocks legitimate work”

Overly broad keywords and category rules create false positives. Narrow the DLP profile, use confidence thresholds, allow approved tenants and route uncertain cases to warning or justification instead of an unconditional block.

“Users moved to personal accounts”

A domain-only policy cannot reliably distinguish account type. Use a control that supplies account context, require approved enterprise tenants and explain why personal sessions are restricted.

“Logs contain more sensitive data than expected”

Prompt and clipboard inspection can create a new repository of confidential information. Limit analyst permissions, minimize captured content, set retention periods and document the legal and employee-privacy basis for monitoring.

“The tools generate alerts nobody can manage”

Prioritize high-confidence DLP matches, prohibited services and unusual transfer behavior. Assign ownership for triage, define severity and suppress duplicate alerts through correlation with identity and endpoint data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which alternative should you choose?

  • Stay with GravityZone AIVC plus its adjacent controls when your immediate requirement is discovering AI software on protected Windows endpoints and your team already operates GravityZone.
  • Choose Microsoft Purview and Defender for Cloud Apps when Microsoft 365, Defender and Purview are your established security and compliance foundation and you want connected discovery, audit, DLP and blocking.
  • Choose Netskope One and Skylight when cross-environment SSE visibility, personal-versus-corporate account distinction and inline/API DLP are central requirements.
  • Choose Cisco AI Access and Umbrella when Cisco networking and Secure Access already carry your users’ traffic and you need service-aware allow, block, redirect and DLP policies.
  • Choose Palo Alto Prisma Browser or AI Access Security when the decisive requirement is selective prompt blocking and monitoring of browser transfers such as uploads, downloads and clipboard operations.

The deciding question is not which product has the longest AI feature list. It is where your organization can reliably observe the activity, how precisely it must enforce policy and which security ecosystem can operate that control without creating unmanaged gaps.
