Double spending is the broader problem: conflicting Bitcoin transactions attempt to spend at least one of the same inputs. Replace-by-fee (RBF) is a policy some nodes use to accept and relay a replacement for an unconfirmed transaction. So an RBF replacement is one kind of conflicting spend, but RBF is not the only way an unconfirmed payment can be double-spent—and a transaction that does not signal RBF is not guaranteed safe.
What is the difference between RBF and double-spending?
| Term | What it describes | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Double-spending | Two or more transactions try to spend one or more of the same inputs. They cannot both be included in the same valid chain history. | Whenever conflicting transactions exist, whether or not they signal RBF. |
| Replace-by-fee (RBF) | A node’s mempool and relay policy for considering a conflicting replacement transaction. It is not a consensus rule. | Before confirmation, while nodes decide which unconfirmed transactions to keep and relay. |
In short, double spending names the conflict; RBF names one policy for handling that conflict while transactions are unconfirmed. Bitcoin Core’s mempool replacement policy documentation and Bitcoin.org’s developer guide describe the shared-input conflict and the role of node policy.

How does a Bitcoin transaction replacement work?
A transaction spends existing outputs, which become inputs to that transaction. If another transaction spends any of those same inputs, the transactions conflict. Before either is confirmed, each Bitcoin node has its own local mempool—a collection of unconfirmed transactions—and applies its own rules for accepting and relaying transactions.
A node that permits replacement may accept a qualifying conflicting transaction and remove the original transaction, along with affected descendants, from its mempool. Another node may retain the original instead. These local policy decisions are not a global vote, and acceptance of a replacement does not decide which version miners will ultimately include in a block.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
RBF is therefore not a cryptographic attack or a change to Bitcoin’s consensus rules. The original transaction does not become consensus-invalid simply because some nodes accept a replacement. Bitcoin Core explains the distinction in its Opt-in RBF FAQ.
What does opt-in RBF signaling mean?
BIP 125 specifies one way a transaction can explicitly signal that it is replaceable: an input has an nSequence value less than 0xffffffff - 1. It also describes inherited signaling, where a transaction can be treated as replaceable because it descends from an unconfirmed transaction that signaled replaceability.

BIP 125 is an applications-layer specification, not a consensus rule. Its signaling rules should not be mistaken for a complete description of every current node’s replacement policy; Bitcoin Core documents its current mempool policy separately.

Yes. Bitcoin Core’s FAQ states: “Unconfirmed transactions can always be double spent, with or without RBF.” A sender can create a conflicting transaction even if the original payment does not signal replaceability. RBF affects whether a particular node may accept and relay a replacement under its policy; it does not create the underlying possibility of conflicting unconfirmed spends.

For a recipient, a zero-confirmation payment is pending, not settled. A non-RBF signal is not proof that the payment cannot be replaced or lose out to a competing transaction.
What changes after a transaction is confirmed?
Confirmation means a transaction has been included in a block. Ordinary mempool replacement applies to unconfirmed transactions; it is not a way to undo a confirmed payment. A conflicting spend after confirmation would require a chain reorganization or another consensus-level change to the chain history, not ordinary RBF handling.

When should a recipient wait for confirmation?
Waiting reduces the risk of releasing goods or services based on a payment that may lose a race between conflicting transactions. The appropriate confirmation threshold depends on the value at stake, whether the transaction can be reversed in practice, and the recipient’s tolerance for risk. The official sources cited here do not establish one universally safe number of confirmations.

- For a high-value or difficult-to-reverse transaction, waiting for confirmation can reduce exposure to an unconfirmed conflict.
- Do not treat the absence of an RBF signal as a substitute for deciding how much confirmation the transaction requires.
Why might a sender use RBF?
RBF has legitimate wallet uses. Bitcoin Core identifies raising a fee to address a confirmation delay, combining transactions, and privacy-related reasons as possible motivations. Whether a replacement is accepted depends on the receiving node’s policy; signaling alone does not guarantee that every node will accept it.
