How to Introduce Girls to STEAM Careers Through Hands-On Projects

Introduce girls to STEAM careers by helping them solve a problem that matters to them: let them design, build, test, and improve a project, then connect the skills they used to women working in related fields. A single activity is a starting point, not a guarantee of a career choice; it works best alongside inclusive teamwork, relatable role models, and opportunities to keep exploring.

Why projects can make STEAM careers feel reachable

A project gives learners a concrete way to try the work behind a career. They can make decisions, use tools or materials, test an idea, and explain what happened. That is more revealing than presenting a list of occupations alone: learners experience some of the problem-solving and creative choices those jobs involve.

The National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP) describes hands-on activities as one part of a broader approach to girls’ STEM identity development, alongside community-building and exposure to diverse women role models. Its Brite initiative offers materials aimed at middle- and high-school-age girls in online and hybrid settings. NGCP’s Brite initiative

Connect the activity to a need people recognize. NGCP reports that 86% of girls and young women want careers where they can help others. That finding can inform the project’s framing, but it does not mean every girl has the same interests or that a particular activity will determine a career choice. NGCP, “State of Girls and Women in STEM 2026,” published March 20, 2026

Use a practical project-to-career sequence

The following sequence combines guidance from NGCP and UCL’s account of engineering outreach. It is a practical framework, not a tested curriculum. Adapt the challenge, materials, duration, and support to learners’ ages, accessibility needs, setting, and local priorities.

  1. Start with a real question. Ask learners to notice a problem at home, school, or in their community. For example: What would make a study space more comfortable? How might a small garden use water more carefully? These are suggested prompts, not activities validated by the cited organizations.
  2. Invite several possible solutions. Let teams choose an approach rather than follow a single set of construction steps. Ask what they want to find out and what evidence would show whether a design works.
  3. Design, build, test, and revise. Provide age-appropriate materials—household items may be enough, or choose a kit for the specific task. Make room for learners to change their designs after testing and to explain what they observed.
  4. Name the STEAM skills as they appear. Point out measurement, materials, computing, design, communication, or artistic choices when they genuinely arise. Link those skills to occupations the project supports, such as engineering, product design, environmental science, computing, or research.
  5. Bring in a relatable professional. Invite a woman working in a relevant field, a university student, or an educator to describe a typical problem in their work, how they entered the field, and something they learned from a setback. Leave time for questions; do not expect one guest to represent all women in that profession.
  6. Reflect and offer a next step. Ask what each learner contributed, what they would change, and which skill or career they want to explore next. When possible, follow up with another project or mentor contact.

UCL’s engineering outreach account emphasizes authentic, open-ended projects and an experimental approach to making real-world engineering tangible. It also describes sustained engagement across primary and secondary education, teacher training, classroom resources, and an intersectional approach that considers differences in ability and understanding. These are descriptions of UCL’s own strategy, not independent proof that a particular program guarantees an outcome. Choose a project that gives learners meaningful choices

Before selecting an activity, consider whether it fits the group and makes the connection between the task and possible careers visible. These are practical selection criteria, not a standardized rubric.

  • Age and prerequisites: Can learners take part without skills or equipment they have not been taught?
  • Materials, time, and space: What is needed, and can the activity work within the available budget and setting?
  • Choice and iteration: Can learners make decisions, compare approaches, test results, and revise their work?
  • Purpose and career links: Is there a recognizable problem or benefit, and can you connect the actual work to more than one relevant occupation?
  • Accessibility and representation: Can everyone participate in the design and testing? Do the examples and guests show varied routes into STEAM?
  • Follow-up: Is an educator or mentor available to help learners continue exploring after the activity?

Make the experience inclusive, not remedial

Girls’ participation should not be framed as a problem caused by lack of ability. UNESCO identifies socialization, stereotypes, learning materials, and school environments among the influences shaping girls’ participation and choices in STEM education. Its 2017 report summary, updated in 2023, is useful background on those factors; its historical enrollment figures should not be presented as current. In practice, watch how the activity is shared out. Check who handles equipment, leads decisions, explains results, or gets uninterrupted airtime. Offer different ways to contribute, and show girls actively making choices and explaining their ideas rather than positioning them as observers who need rescuing.

Role models can help make a pathway visible without suggesting that every learner must follow the same route. In a 2026 UNESCO article, biology and chemistry teacher Edinah Nyakondi of St. Clare Girls Secondary School in Nyamira County, Kenya, said: “My teachers served as a role model for me, which moved and motivated me to join the profession and follow in their footsteps.” Her account is one example of how a teacher’s influence can shape a career path. Explain what STEAM adds—and what the figures measure

Most of the cited program guidance and workforce figures concern STEM. STEAM makes the arts connection explicit when a project genuinely involves creative design, visual communication, storytelling, or other artistic choices. Show where that work affects the project; do not present STEM findings as though they specifically measured arts-inclusive STEAM programs.

NGCP reports that women represent 35% of the STEM workforce and hold 22% of global AI roles; UNESCO reports that women represent 35% of STEM graduates. Each percentage has a different population or denominator, and workforce representation is not the same measure as graduate representation. Keep each figure tied to its publisher and year rather than treating the two 35% statistics as interchangeable. NGCP’s 2026 report summary and UNESCO’s 2026 article
