A sound purchase compares hashrate, joules per terahash (J/TH), continuous power draw, your delivered electricity rate, cooling and electrical infrastructure, and the machine’s fully landed cost. A less powerful ASIC with better efficiency can remain viable at a tariff that makes a high-TH/s but inefficient unit unprofitable.

What Bitcoin mining hardware is worth considering now
Competitive Bitcoin mining uses application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) designed for the SHA-256 algorithm. A desktop processor or graphics card is not a realistic alternative for network-scale Bitcoin mining: it delivers vastly less useful work per watt than dedicated ASIC hardware.

It does not tell you whether that work is affordable at your electricity rate. Two machines with similar TH/s can have materially different power bills, and power is usually the largest recurring cost.

The three specifications that must be read together
| Specification | What it measures | Why it affects a purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Hashrate (TH/s) | Trillions of hashes calculated each second | Determines your share of pool work and expected bitcoin revenue before fees and downtime. |
| Efficiency (J/TH) | Joules consumed for each terahash | Lower is better. It converts directly into a lower energy cost for the same hashing output. |
| Wall power (W) | Electrical load at the outlet while operating | Sets circuit, breaker, transformer, hosting-capacity, heat-rejection, and daily-energy requirements. |
Hashrate and efficiency are related but not interchangeable. A unit can advertise more TH/s while drawing enough additional power to lose money against a more efficient competitor.

Why J/TH can matter more than headline hashrate
To compare two machines fairly, first normalize energy use to the same amount of hash. A 13.5 J/TH machine uses about 23% less electricity per hash than a 17.5 J/TH machine, according to Spark’s 2026 comparison. That difference repeats every hour the machines run.
Spark’s breakeven analysis also found that, at the same hashprice, a 12 J/TH machine can withstand power costs roughly 58% higher than a 19 J/TH machine. This is not a promise of profit; it shows how strongly efficiency changes the maximum electricity rate a machine can tolerate.
Convert a specification into a daily energy bill
- Convert the miner’s rated wall power from watts to kilowatts:
kilowatts = watts ÷ 1,000. - Multiply by 24 hours and your expected uptime:
daily kWh = (watts ÷ 1,000) × 24 × uptime. Express uptime as a decimal, such as 0.95 for 95%. - Multiply daily kWh by your delivered electricity rate:
daily energy cost = daily kWh × rate per kWh. - Add cooling, hosting, demand charges, network fees, and other recurring costs rather than treating the outlet bill as the complete operating cost.
Illustrative calculation: a 3,500 W miner running at 95% uptime consumes 3.5 × 24 × 0.95 = 79.8 kWh per day. At US$0.08/kWh, energy costs US$6.38 per day before cooling, hosting, pool fees, maintenance, and downtime. The example is arithmetic, not a profitability forecast.

Electricity rate and uptime determine the operating case
Published market context from Spark places some large-scale arrangements around US$0.02–US$0.05/kWh, standard industrial hosting around US$0.05–US$0.08/kWh, and average US commercial power at approximately US$0.14/kWh. These are broad examples, not universal prices. Your contract may include demand charges, taxes, transmission fees, minimums, or a separate hosting margin.
Use the rate you will actually pay at the meter or hosting provider. A low advertised energy rate is not comparable if it excludes cooling, curtailment, deposits, or administrative fees.
What to request from an electricity or hosting provider
- All-in price per kWh, including taxes and pass-through charges.
- Demand, peak, connection, and minimum-monthly charges.
- Whether the provider can curtail machines and how curtailed hours are credited.
- Cooling, rack, monitoring, repair, and network fees.
- Expected uptime and the treatment of planned maintenance or power outages.
- Contract term, deposit, payment currency, and termination or relocation costs.
A buyer-specific breakeven workflow
There is no universally valid “most profitable miner” because bitcoin price, network difficulty or hashprice, pool fees, machine performance, uptime, and hardware price change continuously. Build a scenario with your own inputs instead.
- Record the exact machine configuration. Use the variant’s TH/s, J/TH or wall-power rating, cooling type, voltage, and manufacturer tolerances. Do not substitute the specification of a different suffix or firmware mode.
- Calculate energy cost. Apply the daily-kWh formula to your tariff and realistic uptime.
- Estimate hash-based revenue. Use a current calculator or pool estimate for the machine’s hashrate, then show the bitcoin price, network condition or hashprice, pool fee, and date used. Treat the result as a scenario output.
- Add every non-energy cost. Include hosting, cooling, network service, maintenance reserve, insurance, financing, taxes, shipping, and expected downtime.
- Include the capital outlay. Use the actual purchase price rather than a catalog reference when you have a quote. Bitmain’s official calculator notes that its unit price is a reference and allows you to enter the actual miner price for greater accuracy.
- Calculate payback and downside cases. Test lower bitcoin prices or hashprice, a higher tariff, reduced uptime, and a delayed delivery. A machine that works only under one optimistic combination is not a robust purchase.
Simple breakeven representation
For a daily view, define:
daily net = expected daily mining revenue − energy − cooling/hosting − pool fees − maintenance reservesimple payback days = landed hardware cost ÷ daily net
If daily net is zero or negative, there is no finite payback period under those assumptions. A payback calculation also excludes resale value, taxes on income, financing interest, and the risk that an ASIC becomes obsolete before it reaches the calculated payback.
Cooling, electrical, and site requirements
Before ordering, verify that the site can run the machine continuously, not merely start it for a brief test.

Electrical checklist
- Confirm input voltage, phase, plug type, breaker size, and continuous-circuit rating.
- Verify transformer, service-panel, and distribution capacity for the number of miners planned.
- Size conductors and protection for continuous loads under your local electrical code; have qualified personnel perform the work.
- Allow headroom for startup behavior, power-supply variation, and future units.
- Measure actual voltage at the intended rack or outlet under load.
Air-cooled installations
Air ASICs move their electrical consumption into the room as heat. Plan intake and exhaust paths, filtration, dust control, humidity management, and a safe way to reject the heat outdoors or into a permitted industrial space. Hot recirculated air raises chip temperature and can reduce stability or trigger protective shutdowns. Fan noise can exceed what is acceptable in a home, office, or mixed-use building.

Hydro and immersion installations
Hydro-cooled and immersion machines require infrastructure beyond a power outlet. Depending on the design, you may need pumps, manifolds, heat exchangers, radiators or dry coolers, filtration, leak detection, fluid management, and service access. Confirm the coolant specification, operating-temperature range, plumbing connections, and warranty conditions before comparing a hydro unit with an air unit on price alone.
Connectivity, safety, and security
- Provide reliable internet with a stable local network, DNS, and remote monitoring.
- Protect equipment from dust, water ingress, condensation, and unauthorized access.
- Use appropriate fire detection, suppression, emergency shutoff, and cable management.
- Plan replacement fans, power supplies, control boards, filters, coolant, and other likely service parts.
- Document serial numbers, firmware versions, pool credentials, and warranty contacts.
Purchase price is only the first cost
Compare machines on landed and operating cost, not the sticker price. A useful ownership worksheet has these lines:
| Cost category | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Hardware | What is the exact configuration, warranty, payment schedule, and return policy? |
| Delivery | What are freight, insurance, customs duties, brokerage, and taxes? |
| Electrical installation | Are new circuits, panels, transformers, disconnects, or permits required? |
| Cooling | What are the fans, ducting, pumps, heat exchangers, coolant, filters, and service costs? |
| Hosting | Is the quoted rate all-in, and are there deposits, minimums, or curtailment terms? |
| Operations | Budget for pool fees, internet, monitoring, cleaning, repairs, insurance, and labor. |
| Downtime | Estimate lost production during delivery, installation, faults, maintenance, and power events. |
| Exit value | Allow for resale risk if newer, more efficient hardware changes market prices. |
How to compare a shortlist without being misled
- Filter by site compatibility. Remove machines that exceed voltage, circuit, cooling, noise, or space limits.
- Rank by efficiency at your tariff. Calculate daily energy cost per TH/s, not just total watts.
- Check total hash capacity. If your electrical service is fixed, compare how many TH/s each candidate delivers within that power limit.
- Use delivered price. Add logistics and installation before dividing cost by TH/s or by expected daily net.
- Check tolerances and support. A published rating with wide tolerances, weak repair access, or uncertain warranty support carries more operational risk.
- Run sensitivity cases. Recalculate at your high and low electricity rates, a lower uptime, and a weaker hashprice.
Useful normalized metrics
cost per TH = landed cost ÷ rated TH/sshows capital intensity, but says nothing about power cost.watts per TH = J/THfor steady-state specifications; lower values mean less electricity for the same hash output.daily energy per TH = (J/TH × 86,400) ÷ 1,000,000gives kWh per TH per day when the J/TH rating is applicable.hash per electrical kW = TH/s ÷ (watts ÷ 1,000)helps when transformer or hosting capacity is the binding constraint.
Do not compare an efficiency rating measured at one temperature with a different model’s rating measured under another condition without recording the qualification. The Avalon A16XP-300T figure, for example, is specified at 25°C, and its published tolerances mean actual units can vary around the nominal values.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the highest TH/s number
High hashrate can increase gross production but also increase power draw, heat, and infrastructure cost. Compare the extra TH/s with the extra daily energy and cooling expense.
Using a household electricity rate without checking the bill
Residential, commercial, and industrial tariffs can have different demand and fixed charges. Use the delivered rate for the exact location and include hosting overhead.
Treating catalog revenue as guaranteed
Displayed revenue is a time-sensitive estimate. It changes with bitcoin price, network difficulty or hashprice, pool fee, uptime, and actual machine performance. Record the assumptions and date whenever you save a calculator result.

Ignoring thermal limits
A machine can be electrically compatible yet unusable if the room cannot remove its heat. Confirm airflow or liquid-loop capacity before paying a deposit.

A practical decision framework
For very cheap, reliable power
Lower electricity costs give you more room to consider purchase price, availability, and serviceability, but efficiency still protects the operation against future tariff increases and network competition. Compare several efficiency levels rather than assuming the cheapest unit is best.
For ordinary commercial power
Efficiency usually deserves priority over a small hashrate advantage. Favor a machine that stays within your electrical and cooling limits and test its economics at a higher tariff than today’s quoted rate.
Recommended Free Tools
For limited electrical capacity
Use hash per electrical kilowatt as a screening metric. A lower-TH/s machine with better J/TH may deliver more total hash within a fixed service or hosting allocation.
For a home or small workshop
Noise, heat, circuit capacity, fire protection, and utility rules may be more restrictive than the purchase price. An industrial hosting arrangement can be more practical if the provider’s all-in rate and contract terms are transparent.
What to verify before placing an order
- Exact model, cooling type, firmware mode, hashrate, J/TH, and rated wattage.
- Voltage, phase, connector, and power-supply requirements for your region.
- Manufacturer tolerance, warranty period, exclusions, and repair process.
- Seller identity, stock status, delivery date, payment protection, and return terms.
- Complete landed-cost estimate, including shipping, duties, taxes, and installation.
- Electricity or hosting contract with all additional fees and uptime terms.
- Cooling design, noise level, heat-rejection capacity, and maintenance schedule.
- Downside-case calculation using your actual tariff and conservative uptime.
Only after these checks should you choose between a current Bitmain, MicroBT, or Canaan configuration. The winning machine is the one that produces the best risk-adjusted result under your site’s power, cooling, price, and uptime assumptions—not the one with the largest number in a product headline.
