It is crypto slang that grew from a misspelling of “hold” in a 2013 Bitcoin forum post. HODLing is a choice, not a strategy that guarantees a profit: Bitcoin remains speculative and volatile, so whether holding makes sense depends on your goals, finances, time horizon and ability to bear losses.
What does HODL mean?
In cryptocurrency discussions, HODL means holding an asset for the long term instead of selling. The Bitcoin Foundation glossary traces the term to a misspelling of “hold” in a 2013 Bitcoin forum post. The phrase “hold on for dear life” is sometimes attached to it, but the documented origin is the misspelling, not that later expansion. Bitcoin Foundation glossary

In practice, a person who HODLs keeps exposure to Bitcoin through price fluctuations rather than trading in response to short-term moves. The word describes behavior; it says nothing about whether the choice is suitable or profitable.
Should you HODL Bitcoin?
There is no universal yes or no. Consider whether Bitcoin fits your financial goals, whether you can tolerate a sharp decline or loss, and whether you are comfortable with the uncertainty over your intended time horizon. A long holding period does not remove the risks or guarantee that a decline will be recovered.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
The SEC describes Bitcoin as highly speculative and warns that its price can be volatile. That caution also applies when exposure comes through an exchange-traded product (ETP), rather than from personally buying and managing Bitcoin. An ETP can avoid some direct transacting and key-management tasks, but it is still exposure to a speculative, volatile asset and carries product-specific risks. SEC investor bulletin on Bitcoin ETPs
- Goals: Decide what role, if any, Bitcoin would have in your finances rather than relying on a slogan or online enthusiasm.
- Risk capacity: Consider whether a substantial loss would affect essential expenses or other financial commitments.
- Time horizon: Be clear about how long you can leave the money exposed and what circumstances might require you to sell.
- Plan: Set your own criteria for holding or changing course; “diamond hands” is not a risk-management method.
This is an educational framework, not a personal recommendation to buy, sell or hold. The SEC’s 2014 alert describes Bitcoin as decentralized and peer-to-peer, without a central authority or bank and without government backing; it also warns that Bitcoin-related opportunities can be high-risk and vulnerable to fraud. That alert is dated and should not be used as current tax or legal advice. SEC Bitcoin investor alert

What does holding Bitcoin involve?
If you own Bitcoin directly, you need a way to manage access to it. A crypto wallet manages private keys or passcodes; it does not literally contain the Bitcoin. A private key authorizes transactions, while a public key can be used to receive assets and does not itself authorize spending. Losing the private key can permanently remove access. Self-custody
With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for keeping them secure and maintaining a recovery method. A seed phrase can restore a wallet if its device or software is lost or damaged, so protect it and never share it. If you lose both access and the recovery information, you may be unable to retrieve the Bitcoin.
Third-party custody
With third-party custody, an exchange or other provider controls access to the keys. This can reduce the burden of managing keys yourself, but introduces provider and account risks. Before relying on a custodian, examine its background, security, fees, insurance terms, asset-use policies, privacy practices and what happens if it fails. The SEC warns that a custodian’s failure or bankruptcy may result in loss of access. SEC investor bulletin on crypto-asset custody

Hot wallets, cold wallets and account security
A hot wallet is connected to the internet, which can make transactions more convenient but also exposes it to cyberthreats. A cold wallet is typically a physical device or another offline method. The SEC says cold wallets are generally less exposed to cyberthreats but less convenient; a physical device can still be lost, damaged or stolen. A hardware wallet is optional, not a guarantee of safety or protection from every kind of loss. SEC investor bulletin on crypto-asset custody

Holding Bitcoin is not the same as earning interest
Keeping Bitcoin is different from placing crypto assets in an interest-bearing account. The SEC warns that crypto-asset interest-bearing accounts are not equivalent to insured bank deposits and may involve volatility, illiquidity, provider failure, regulatory change, fraud, hacking or other loss. Do not treat a promised yield as a savings-account guarantee. SEC investor bulletin on crypto-asset interest-bearing accounts
