The cheapest way to send money internationally is usually a corridor-specific regulated fintech transfer service, not Bitcoin. Compare the recipient’s final amount after the transfer fee, foreign-exchange spread, network charge, cash-out fee and any intermediary cost. Stablecoins can be faster and cheaper where reliable fiat on- and off-ramps exist; XRP and Stellar address different institutional and end-user use cases; Lightning is mainly a small-value Bitcoin rail whose reach is still unproven at scale.
There is no universally cheapest cryptocurrency. A blockchain transaction can cost cents while conversion, compliance checks, withdrawal charges or poor liquidity make the complete remittance more expensive than a conventional digital transfer. The right choice depends on the sending and receiving countries, currency pair, amount, urgency, access to smartphones and identity documents, and the recipient’s ability to cash out.

Start with the delivered amount, not the network fee
For any route, calculate:
Total cost = sending fee + foreign-exchange spread + blockchain or payment-network fee + intermediary charge + withdrawal or cash-out fee.

Then check how long the recipient waits, whether the quoted rate is guaranteed, what identification is required, and what protection exists if the transfer is delayed or reversed. A service advertising a nearly free token transfer may still require two currency conversions and a bank withdrawal.

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Working Paper 1385, published in 2026, found bank foreign-exchange markups of approximately 2% to 4.7% in a small transaction sample before explicit wire fees. For U.S.-origin transfers of $10,000 in developed-market currency groups, median total costs were around $40 to $60. The same analysis found fintech money-transfer operators substantially cheaper than traditional retail bank wires in its sample. Those figures are benchmarks, not a quote for your corridor.
Costs can be much higher for smaller remittances. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reported in 2025 that some remittances cost up to 20% of the amount sent. That is why a service with a modest percentage fee and a transparent exchange rate can beat a low-fee crypto transfer once every conversion and cash-out charge is included.
How the main Bitcoin alternatives compare
| Alternative | Best-supported use | Potential strengths | Important constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regulated fintech money-transfer operators | Consumer remittances with direct fiat delivery | Lower observed cost than bank wires in the BIS sample; established bank, wallet or cash-out networks | Pricing, exchange-rate spreads, identity checks and coverage vary by corridor |
| Stablecoins such as USDC or USDT | Digital settlement and selected remittance corridors | Fast token movement, transparent on-chain records and access where exchanges or wallets provide dependable conversion | Fiat conversion, withdrawal fees, liquidity, redemption, regulation, reserve and run risk |
| XRP | Institutional or interbank settlement designs | Designed as a bridge-liquidity and real-time-settlement asset in the World Bank’s review | Price volatility, legal status, liquidity and provider access differ by jurisdiction; the review is not a current performance guarantee |
| Stellar (XLM) | End-user and unbanked-oriented payment services | Low-cost cross-border service orientation in the World Bank’s review | Needs trusted intermediaries, local access and a practical cash-out route; availability must be verified now |
| Lightning Network | Small-value Bitcoin payments | Near-instant mobile-to-mobile payment objective and potentially low marginal fees | Scale remains untested; smartphone, identity and physical-access barriers can exclude users |
| Open banking and linked fast-payment systems | Account-to-account fiat transfers | Can remove settlement delays and intermediary layers | Requires participating banks, compatible APIs and supported jurisdictions |
| Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) | Longer-term public digital-money infrastructure | Potential efficiency and inclusion gains | Privacy, competition, governance, setup and interoperability challenges |
Fintech money-transfer services: the practical benchmark
For a consumer who wants the recipient to receive local currency, a regulated digital money-transfer operator is usually the first option to price. The BIS comparison found these operators substantially cheaper than traditional retail bank wires, while still providing a familiar fiat payout.
What to compare in a quote
- The exact amount the recipient receives, not just the headline fee.
- The provider’s exchange rate against a mid-market reference rate.
- Whether the displayed fee changes when you fund by bank account, card or cash.
- Delivery method: bank deposit, mobile wallet, cash pickup or another local rail.
- Delivery time under the selected funding method, including weekends and holidays.
- Identity and source-of-funds checks that could delay a first transfer.
- Cancellation, refund and error-resolution rules in both countries.
A digital service can still be expensive on a thinly supported currency pair. Compare at least two licensed options for the same amount and delivery method, and repeat the check immediately before payment because rates and fees change.

Stablecoins: when they can lower friction
Stablecoins are tokens designed to track a fiat currency, commonly the U.S. dollar. They can move between compatible wallets without waiting for a correspondent-bank chain. The IMF wrote in 2025: “Stablecoins could make international payments faster and cheaper for people and companies, particularly remittances.” That is a potential benefit, not a guarantee that every stablecoin transfer is cheaper.
Where the savings can occur
- Settlement can occur at any hour instead of waiting for banking cutoffs.
- One on-chain transfer can replace several correspondent-bank messages.
- A recipient with a trusted local wallet or exchange may convert directly into local money.
- Public transaction records can make the movement of funds easier to audit.
Why the end-to-end price may be higher
- The sender may pay a fee to buy the stablecoin and the recipient may pay another to sell it.
- Network fees vary by chain and congestion; a token transfer is not automatically free.
- Withdrawal limits, liquidity gaps or wide spreads can reduce the recipient’s payout.
- Some recipients must wait for an exchange review or a bank’s settlement window.
- Wallet recovery, mistaken addresses and unsupported networks can make a transfer irreversible.
BIS cautions that stablecoin payments still depend on fiat conversion, exchange or intermediary services, withdrawal fees and sufficient liquidity. The competitiveness of the rail therefore depends on the surrounding market, not only the blockchain.
Scale and market context
The BIS study covering 184 countries from 2017 through 2024 found crypto cross-border flows peaking at approximately $2.6 trillion in 2021, with stablecoins accounting for close to half of that volume. It also found stablecoin flows more closely associated with remittance costs and transactional needs in emerging and developing economies. The IMF reported in 2025 that stablecoins were about 10% of Bitcoin’s market capitalization; the two largest had a combined market capitalization of $260 billion and trading volume of $23 trillion in 2024. These are market-size observations, not evidence that a particular corridor is safe, liquid or inexpensive today.
Stablecoin due diligence
- Confirm the token, network and receiving wallet all match exactly. Sending on an unsupported network can permanently strand funds.
- Check the provider’s current license, geographic availability and redemption policy.
- Price the purchase, on-chain transfer, sale, bank withdrawal and any cash-out fee together.
- Check daily limits, identity requirements, expected review times and whether the recipient can use a local bank or wallet.
- Send a small test amount when the address and service are new, then verify receipt before sending the balance.
- Keep records of the transaction ID, exchange receipts and the fiat amount delivered for tax and dispute purposes.
XRP: an institutional settlement design, not a universal remittance answer
The World Bank’s review describes Ripple/XRP as oriented toward multinational and interbank settlement, using an asset that can provide bridge liquidity between currencies. That intended audience differs from a consumer choosing a wallet for a family remittance.

XRP may be relevant when a licensed payment provider already supports both currencies, maintains adequate market liquidity and has a compliant process for converting XRP in each jurisdiction. Without those conditions, the sender faces the same practical hurdles as any crypto rail: buying the asset, managing price movements during settlement, selling it and withdrawing local currency.
Questions to verify before considering XRP
- Is XRP legally offered to customers and payment providers in both countries?
- Does the provider have a live route for the exact currency pair, rather than merely listing XRP for trading?
- Who bears price risk between purchase, transfer and conversion?
- What are the order-book spread, trading fee, withdrawal fee and bank cash-out fee?
- What consumer protection applies if a compliance review freezes the transaction?
Do not treat historical claims about transaction speed or technical capacity as a current guarantee. Corridor liquidity, regulation and provider integration determine the real result.
Stellar (XLM): an end-user orientation with local-access dependencies
The same World Bank review characterizes Stellar as focused on low-cost cross-border services for end users and unbanked populations. That focus can fit remittances better than an interbank-only design, but the network alone does not solve the last mile.
A recipient still needs a trusted wallet, an intermediary that can exchange the asset into local currency, and a bank account, mobile-money account or physical agent for cash-out. In countries with limited identity coverage, few smartphones or weak exchange liquidity, those requirements can exclude the people a low-cost network is intended to serve.

How to evaluate an XLM route
- Identify the exact local partner responsible for conversion and payout.
- Confirm that the partner is licensed or otherwise permitted to provide the service.
- Check the quoted local-currency amount after spread and withdrawal charges.
- Ask how mistaken transfers, account lockouts and disputes are handled.
- Verify current corridor availability rather than relying on an old list of supported countries.
Lightning Network: promising for small Bitcoin payments, limited as a universal rail
Lightning creates payment channels intended to let Bitcoin move quickly between participating wallets. The World Bank describes crypto-asset payment providers as aiming for “near-instant, mobile-to-mobile small-value transactions at lower cost than existing solutions, using promising new open-source technologies (for example, the Lightning Network).”
The same review warns that scale remains untested. Lightning is therefore most plausible for small payments when both users already have compatible wallets and a reliable route to acquire and cash out Bitcoin. It is less suitable when a recipient needs local fiat immediately, lacks a smartphone or identity document, or depends on a physical access point.
Lightning-specific constraints
- Both parties need compatible wallet infrastructure and enough channel liquidity.
- Bitcoin’s market price can change while the recipient converts to fiat.
- Wallet custody, backup and recovery practices determine whether funds can be retrieved.
- On- and off-ramps may impose identity checks, limits and withdrawal fees.
- A payment sent to the wrong invoice or recipient is generally difficult to reverse.
For a small cross-border purchase between technically experienced users, Lightning may reduce settlement friction. For a recurring family remittance, compare the complete fiat payout against a regulated transfer service each time.

Open banking and linked fast-payment systems
Account-to-account systems can be cheaper than a bank wire when the sending and receiving banks expose compatible APIs and instant-payment connections. The IMF’s Financial Access Survey report describes blockchain, stablecoin and related innovations as addressing high fees, slow settlement and limited access; it also notes that participating institutions and compatible jurisdictions are prerequisites.

These systems avoid token-price volatility, but they are not global by default. Verify supported banks, operating hours, transfer limits, fraud controls and whether the payment can be recalled. A fast domestic leg does not ensure a fast international conversion.
Central bank digital currencies
CBDCs could provide public digital-money infrastructure with potential efficiency and inclusion benefits. The World Bank highlights privacy, competition, setup and governance challenges. Most readers cannot yet use a CBDC as a universal international remittance method, so treat availability, interoperability and legal tender status as country-specific facts to verify.
A corridor-by-corridor decision process
- Define the payout. Record the sending currency, receiving currency, amount, destination city or account type, and whether the recipient needs cash, a bank deposit or a wallet balance.
- Set the service level. Decide whether delivery must be immediate, same day or merely predictable. Urgency often changes the cheapest option.
- Collect comparable quotes. Request the delivered local-currency amount from a regulated fintech operator, the recipient’s bank and any legally available digital-asset on-ramp. Use the same funding method and timestamp.
- Include every charge. Add FX spread, network fee, trading fee, withdrawal fee, cash-out commission and any intermediary charge. Ignore a headline “zero fee” until the recipient amount is known.
- Check access. Confirm smartphones, identity documents, bank or mobile-money accounts, local agents, language support and operating hours for both parties.
- Check legal and consumer safeguards. Verify licensing, disclosure of exchange rates, complaint channels, privacy practices, transaction monitoring and whether funds are insured or protected. Crypto balances generally do not have the same protections as bank deposits.
- Test safely. For a new wallet or digital-asset route, send a small amount first, confirm conversion and cash-out, then send the remainder.
- Recheck before recurring payments. Liquidity, exchange rates, limits and regulations can change. A route that wins this month may not win next month.
Access and risk checklist
Lower fees do not automatically mean broader financial access. The IMF identifies stablecoin risks that include reserve or run risk, currency substitution, circumvention of capital-flow controls, illicit-finance exposure, market fragmentation and data gaps. The World Bank warns that crypto payment technologies may remain untested at scale and that missing smartphones, identity documents or physical access points can prevent excluded users from converting between fiat and crypto.
- Volatility: A token can lose value between sending and conversion even when the network fee is tiny.
- Liquidity: A quoted price may not be available for the amount you need, especially in less-traded currencies.
- Custody: A hosted wallet can freeze an account; a self-custody wallet can be lost without a backup.
- Irreversibility: Blockchain payments usually cannot be recalled like some bank transfers.
- Regulation: Rules, licensing and capital controls differ by country and can change without much notice.
- Privacy: Public ledgers are transparent, while exchanges and banks may collect identity and transaction data.
- Fraud: Verify wallet addresses through a second channel and never share recovery phrases or one-time codes.
What the published evidence says about potential savings
The IMF Financial Access Survey report records examples of remittance costs falling by up to 60% and fees as low as $0.01 per transaction compared with traditional services charging 6% to 10%. Those figures are reported results from the publication and its cited sources, not universal prices or a promise for a particular corridor. They may reflect specific providers, routes, transaction sizes and time periods.
Use these figures as a reason to shop for a better route, not as permission to ignore conversion and cash-out costs. The BIS conclusion is precise: “Ultimately, the competitiveness of stablecoins as cross-border payment rails depends not only on blockchain technology but also on market liquidity, reliable access to fiat currencies, regulatory compliance and trust in intermediaries.”
Which option fits common situations?
| Situation | Most sensible starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly family remittance with bank or cash payout | Regulated fintech money-transfer quote | It prices the complete fiat delivery and usually has established cash-out coverage |
| Both parties already use compliant digital wallets and need rapid digital settlement | Stablecoin quote alongside a fiat quote | Compare the speed benefit against purchase, sale and withdrawal charges |
| Institutional treasury or interbank liquidity problem | Specialist settlement provider using a permitted digital asset | XRP’s reviewed design target is institutional bridge liquidity, not casual consumer use |
| Small payment between technically experienced Bitcoin users | Lightning quote | It is designed for rapid small-value payments, but both users need compatible access and cash-out options |
| Sender and recipient have participating banks in linked instant-payment jurisdictions | Open-banking or fast-payment transfer | It can remove token volatility and some intermediary layers |
| Recipient lacks a smartphone, identity document or conversion point | Cash-capable regulated fiat service | A low blockchain fee cannot solve the physical access problem |
Bottom line
Begin with the recipient’s delivered local currency and compare a regulated fintech transfer with the available bank and digital-asset routes for that exact corridor. Stablecoins can be the strongest alternative where licensed on-ramps, deep liquidity and cheap local cash-out already exist. XRP is primarily an institutional bridge-liquidity concept, Stellar is more end-user and unbanked oriented but still depends on intermediaries, and Lightning is a promising small-payment technology rather than a proven universal remittance network. Recalculate the all-in cost, access requirements and legal protections every time the corridor, amount or provider changes.
