Bitcoin does not keep a bank-style balance for each wallet or user at the protocol level. It uses the unspent transaction output (UTXO) model: transactions spend outputs from earlier transactions and create new outputs. A wallet may show one balance, but that figure is a sum of the spendable outputs it recognizes.
What is Bitcoin’s account model?
Strictly speaking, Bitcoin has no protocol-level account-balance model. Its ledger tracks transaction outputs that remain unspent. Each such output has a value and conditions that determine how it can be spent; together, eligible unspent outputs are called the UTXO set.

The Bitcoin Developer Guide puts the wallet display this way: “When your Bitcoin wallet tells you that you have a 10,000 satoshi balance, it really means that you have 10,000 satoshis waiting in one or more UTXOs.” (Bitcoin Developer Guide: Transactions)
How Bitcoin transactions use UTXOs
A transaction refers to one or more earlier outputs as inputs. Those inputs must still be unspent. The transaction then creates new outputs that can be spent by later transactions. An output can be spent only once; after it is spent, it is no longer available as an input for another valid transaction. (Bitcoin Developer Guide: Block Chain)

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
For example, suppose a wallet controls one unspent output worth 100,000 satoshis and its owner wants to pay 30,000 satoshis. The transaction can consume the 100,000-satoshi output, create a 30,000-satoshi output for the recipient, and create another output returning the surplus to the sender’s wallet as change. This is an illustration, not a prescribed transaction format or fee estimate.
The transaction’s inputs must be accounted for by its outputs and any fee. In the example, if the sender’s change output is 69,000 satoshis, the 1,000-satoshi difference between input value and output value is the transaction fee. The fee is not a separate account balance; it is the difference between the total values consumed and created. (Bitcoin Developer Guide: Block Chain)

What a wallet balance means
A wallet can identify outputs associated with keys or scripts it controls and that it can spend. Its software adds the values of those outputs to present a convenient total. The balance is useful for the person using the wallet, but it is an abstraction over transaction outputs rather than a balance stored in the Bitcoin ledger for that wallet.
Payment construction therefore differs from simply subtracting a payment from an account balance: wallet software selects eligible outputs, creates recipient and, when needed, change outputs, and accounts for the fee.

Why Bitcoin documentation still uses the word “account”
In BIP 44, “account” is a wallet-organization term. The standard describes a hierarchy for deterministic wallets in which accounts separate key spaces and can represent different user identities or purposes, such as savings and shared expenses. It does not mean the Bitcoin ledger stores a mutable balance for each account. (BIP 44: Multi-Account Hierarchy for Deterministic Wallets)

| Aspect | Bitcoin UTXO model | Account-balance model |
|---|---|---|
| Ledger state | Tracks individual outputs that remain unspent. | Represents value as a stored balance associated with an account. |
| How a payment is constructed | Eligible outputs are selected as inputs; the transaction creates outputs for the recipient and, when applicable, change. | A payment is represented as a debit to an account balance. |
| Surplus | Surplus from selected inputs can be returned in a change output. | Value not spent remains in the account balance. |
| Wallet’s role | Identifies and manages relevant outputs and may calculate a combined display balance. | Presents an aggregate balance for the account. |
These are different ways to represent and construct transactions; the distinction alone does not make one design categorically better. For Bitcoin, the precise answer is that the protocol is UTXO-based, while wallet software can organize keys into accounts and display an account-like total.
