Tools that unlock a user’s device or authenticate employee logins are not interchangeable with services that check a customer’s selfie and identity documents during onboarding. The 12 products below form a shortlist across those categories—not a verified quality ranking. The available feature descriptions and prices are largely from comparison sources and a vendor directory, so confirm details, availability and terms with each provider before buying.
First, distinguish biometric login from identity verification
Biometric authentication can describe two different systems. A local authenticator uses a fingerprint, face or another device-level gesture to unlock an authenticator or passkey. Remote identity verification compares a selfie or another biometric reference as part of onboarding, account recovery or customer checks, often alongside document validation and liveness detection.

FIDO2 supports both embedded authenticators and external security keys. In the FIDO passkey model, biometric information used to unlock an authenticator stays on the user’s device; remote identity verification products have a different data flow and should not be assumed to offer the same privacy property. FIDO Alliance specifications
That difference matters when comparing products: an SDK, workforce login platform and customer verification workflow solve different problems, even if each uses biometrics.

How to choose the right category
For employee or customer login
Start with the authenticator and the login flow, not with a general request for “biometrics.” Establish whether the product supports the platforms and identity systems you use, how users enroll, and what happens if a sensor fails or someone loses access to a device. FIDO2 login can use an embedded authenticator—such as a device’s biometric or PIN unlock—or an external security key. Web Authentication works with CTAP in the FIDO2 architecture. FIDO Alliance specifications
For onboarding, recovery or customer checks
Ask whether you are buying an SDK, an API, an on-premise component or an end-to-end verification workflow. Confirm which checks are included—such as document validation, selfie matching and liveness—and whether the service supports the countries and document types your users need. A face-recognition component alone is not equivalent to a complete KYC or identity-proofing workflow.

What to compare before committing
- Use case and architecture: device-local unlock, employee login, customer account recovery or remote identity proofing; identify whether the product is an authenticator, SDK, cloud API or full workflow.
- Biometric modality and fallback: supported modalities, enrollment and recovery behavior, and whether users can fall back to a PIN or another factor.
- Attack detection and test evidence: request independent lab results, the test version, operating point, attack classes and false-accept and false-reject performance. A generic “liveness” claim is not a certification.
- Privacy and data handling: find out what is captured, where biometric templates or references are stored, whether data goes to a server, how retention and deletion work, and which subprocessors are involved. Do not assume remote verification has the on-device data handling of FIDO passkeys.
- Integration and deployment: check web, iOS and Android support; APIs; cloud or on-premise options; identity-platform integrations; and operational monitoring.
- Total price: establish whether billing is per user, per check or subscription-based, and ask about implementation, minimum commitments, volume tiers, certification and support fees, plus regional taxes and currency.
- Accessibility and demographic performance: request measurements for the devices, conditions and intended user population, and confirm accessible alternatives and failure handling.
How to interpret biometric accuracy and certification claims
An error-rate figure cannot be compared responsibly without its threshold, test population, attack testing and conditions. The FIDO Biometrics Requirements v5.0 document dated September 1, 2026 is a review draft, not a finalized standard. It says results and thresholds need to be understood with their operating point and test information; its NIST-alignment section says presentation attack detection should be implemented for fingerprint and iris and shall be implemented for face. It also states biometric performance should be tested to ISO/IEC 19795-1. Treat those statements as draft guidance, and ask vendors for the exact test evidence and certification scope behind their claims. FIDO Biometrics Requirements v5.0 Review Draft
FIDO certification distinguishes biometric components, remote face verification and user authentication certification. FIDO’s overview reports more than 1,200 certified implementations; check the directory for the specific implementation and what the certification covers. FIDO certification

Certification costs are vendor costs, not software prices: FIDO’s fee page lists functional authenticator certification at USD 6,000 for members and USD 9,000 for non-members, and base biometric component certification at USD 12,000 for members and USD 18,000 for non-members. These are fees on the FIDO page accessed October 8, 2026; they do not establish that a shortlisted product is certified. FIDO Certification Fees
What passkey adoption figures do—and do not—tell buyers
In FIDO Alliance’s 2026 consumer survey of 11,000 respondents across 10 countries, 90% said they were aware of passkeys, and 75% said they had enabled passkeys on at least some accounts. Those survey results indicate familiarity and use in the surveyed population; they do not establish that a particular biometric product is suitable, secure or easy to deploy in your organization.
