AI-assisted reverse engineering can make a legacy application easier to inventory, map, and explain before you decide how to modernize it. Its planning value is better visibility into code, dependencies, and candidate behavior—not an automatic answer to what the system should become. Treat generated findings as evidence to verify against tests, runtime behavior, documentation, and people who know the business process.
What changes when AI helps with reverse engineering?
Traditional modernization planning often begins with incomplete documentation and scattered knowledge. Code analysis can help expose components, dependencies, behavioral patterns, architectural decisions, and plain-language descriptions of business logic. That can give a team an earlier, more structured view of the system it needs to change.

AWS describes its comprehensive codebase analysis as static analysis combining deterministic tools, foundation models, large language models, graph neural networks, and automated reasoning. The described outputs can inform discovery, but static analysis does not by itself establish what runs in production, how often a path is used, or whether an inferred business rule is correct. AWS’s codebase-analysis overview describes the method and its outputs.

- Observation: a module calls another module, a data store is referenced, or a code path contains a particular condition.
- Interpretation: the condition may represent a business rule or operational constraint.
- Decision: the team chooses a modernization boundary, target architecture, or migration sequence.
Keep the source artifact and validation owner alongside each important observation. Mark uncertain interpretations as hypotheses until a test, operational record, or domain expert confirms them. A generated summary is not the same thing as proof of business intent.

How does this affect modernization scope and sequencing?
When a team can see dependencies and likely constraints earlier, it can make more informed choices about what to assess first, which components may belong together, and where compatibility or operational risk could affect a migration wave. Microsoft’s migration guidance says code assessment can surface compatibility issues and modernization opportunities that inform wave planning and target architecture. It also cautions teams to validate framework and SDK support and not change frameworks without a strong business reason. Microsoft’s workload-assessment guidance explains that relationship between assessment and migration planning.
For mainframe modernization, AWS describes a workflow that builds a system inventory and dependency maps before generating traceable requirements. It also describes surfacing potential missing files and files written in unsupported languages early. These are vendor-described product capabilities, not independent measurements of planning accuracy or speed. AWS’s mainframe workflow overview sets out that approach.

The practical effect is a stronger set of inputs for comparing options—not a mandate to rewrite. A dependency map may reveal that a proposed boundary cuts across tightly connected components; a compatibility finding may change which wave is feasible; an uncertain rule may require investigation before the team commits to a design.

- Define the outcome first. State the business problem, intended result, constraints, and how success will be measured before selecting a tool or rewrite path. Microsoft’s planning guidance calls for a problem statement, cost-benefit analysis, phased plan, ongoing review, and stakeholder involvement. See Microsoft’s modernization-planning guidance.
- Build a current-state baseline. Record source repositories and versions, languages and frameworks, dependencies, entry points, interfaces, data stores, deployment shape, tests, and known operational behavior. Analysis can support parts of this inventory, but AWS’s described comprehensive analysis requires a readable Git repository in a clean state and configured AWS credentials.
- Test the approach on a bounded proof of concept. Choose a representative slice rather than assuming one sample explains the whole estate. Compare the analysis with code review, existing documentation, tests, runtime evidence, and domain knowledge. Microsoft’s modernization life cycle includes a proof of concept to expose technical and operational issues before scaling. Microsoft’s modernization life-cycle overview describes the assessment, planning, execution, and maintenance cycle.
- Convert confirmed findings into planning artifacts. Create a dependency-aware inventory, candidate modernization boundaries, a risk register, and migration-wave options. Explicitly record missing files, unsupported languages, external dependencies, and unresolved business rules instead of allowing gaps to be silently filled by a generated explanation.
- Compare options against real constraints. Evaluate value, effort, compatibility, risk, and operational requirements. Check current official documentation for the actual language, framework, SDK, database, deployment model, and target environment; a code transformation does not itself make a workload supported.
- Keep human approval gates. Require accountable reviewers to approve business-rule interpretations, target architecture, and code changes. Revisit the plan when proof-of-concept or implementation work produces new evidence.
How to compare analysis approaches
There is no standardized scorecard established by the cited guidance. Use these questions to compare workflows against the application you actually have, rather than treating a polished summary as a measure of coverage.

| Planning dimension | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Which languages, repositories, data stores, dependencies, and artifacts are analyzed? How are missing or unsupported inputs reported? |
| Evidence traceability | Can reviewers follow a generated behavior description or candidate requirement back to the specific source artifacts? |
| System context | Does the workflow connect modules, entry points, and data flows, or only summarize isolated files? |
| Validation burden | Which findings need confirmation from tests, runtime evidence, documentation, or domain experts? |
| Compatibility support | Does it cover the actual language, framework, SDK, and proposed target environment? |
| Operational prerequisites | What repository condition, credentials, permissions, tools, or data access are required? |
| Planning usefulness | Does the output support inventories and candidate boundaries that can map to risks, waves, and measurable outcomes, or does it stop at summaries? |
AWS warns in its mainframe guidance that general-purpose AI can struggle at enterprise scale when it lacks system-level context or reliable traceability from source through requirements. That is a reason to evaluate context and evidence links explicitly, not to assume a specialized workflow is automatically correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What AI-assisted analysis cannot establish on its own
- Production behavior: static code analysis does not show every runtime path, workload pattern, or operational dependency. Validate against logs, monitoring, deployment records, and people responsible for the system.
- Business correctness: a plausible explanation of a condition in code may misstate why it exists. Confirm material rules with tests, records, and domain owners.
- Compatibility: support depends on the specific workload and target. Verify versions and platform requirements in current official documentation before using them to set scope or migration dates.
- Plan or code correctness: Microsoft explicitly warns that AI-generated plans and code can contain errors. Its guidance says to verify recommendations against linked documentation, review generated changes, and test the application before shipping. Read Microsoft’s AI-assisted modernization planning guidance.
- A measured productivity gain: the cited sources do not provide an original-publisher statistic measuring the effect of AI-assisted reverse engineering on modernization-planning outcomes. Microsoft separately reports general modernization claims, but those are not evidence that reverse engineering itself causes those results.
Keep planning iterative
Modernization is not a one-time plan produced by a code scan. Microsoft frames it as a cycle of assessment, planning, execution, and maintenance. Use analysis to improve the starting evidence, then update inventories, risks, and sequencing as the proof of concept and implementation reveal facts that were not visible in source alone. AWS also identifies reverse engineering, documentation, impact analysis, technical-debt work, and change review as generative-AI use cases; each still depends on fit-for-purpose validation. AWS’s software-development guidance lists those use cases.
