For a SaaS import scheduled every 15 minutes, use application error tracking to diagnose API and code failures, and a separate heartbeat to detect when the import stops checking in. Send that heartbeat only after the job meets its defined success criteria; a healthy API does not prove the scheduled import completed.
Why API error tracking is not enough
Request monitoring and scheduled-job monitoring answer different questions. FastAPI’s OpenTelemetry instrumentation describes HTTP requests through traces, metrics, and logs. That telemetry can help investigate application behavior, but a request trace is not a direct signal that a periodic import ran to completion. FastAPI’s OpenTelemetry documentation also notes that unhandled exceptions can be recorded as logs linked to a request or connection trace, including when the trace itself is not sampled.

A heartbeat gives the import its own check-in: a monitor waits for a request from the job and can mark it down if one does not arrive. GlitchTip documents this pattern for uptime monitors. GlitchTip’s uptime-monitoring documentation does not establish whether a 15-minute interval is available on a particular hosted plan or installation, so confirm the actual interval and alert limits before relying on it for that schedule.

Emit the check-in after the import passes the success conditions that matter to your service—not merely when the job starts. Otherwise, a run that begins and then crashes could still report activity. This is an implementation choice based on the monitor’s check-in behavior, rather than a guarantee made by the monitoring product.

- Define success. Specify what completion means, such as all required records being processed and the resulting data being committed. Decide explicitly whether partial completion qualifies.
- Give the import a distinct monitor. Keep its heartbeat separate from the public API health endpoint. A running web process should not be able to hide a stalled scheduler or failed import.
- Send the heartbeat after validation. Place the request after the job’s success checks pass, and ensure failed or incomplete runs do not send it.
- Wire and test alerts. Associate the monitor with a project whose email alerts are configured, then test the missing-check-in path outside production. GlitchTip documents project association and hosted monitor requests counting as subscription events; verify the applicable service limits and notification settings.
Capture framework errors alongside the heartbeat
FastAPI: request traces, metrics, and logs
FastAPI’s documentation describes OpenTelemetry support for traces, metrics, and logs. It shows configuring the service name and OTLP endpoint with OTEL_SERVICE_NAME and OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT, and notes that the standard extras include packages for sending telemetry. Consult the FastAPI setup guidance for the configuration appropriate to your application.
Telemetry can expose sensitive information: exception messages and stack traces may contain data that should not leave your environment. FastAPI advises filtering or redacting such content through log processors. Review what your service emits before enabling collection in production.

Django: framework-aware exception context
GlitchTip’s Django setup uses sentry-sdk and a project DSN, with tracing configuration available as an option. The SDK auto-detects Django and the documentation describes capture of unhandled view exceptions, middleware errors, and SQL query breadcrumbs. Before choosing a monitoring service for a strict 15-minute schedule, verify the details that determine whether it will work in practice:

- Heartbeat interval: Confirm the minimum configurable interval on your specific hosted plan or self-hosted installation. The available documentation does not establish a universal 15-minute minimum or plan entitlement.
- Alert behavior: Check which notifications are configured, who receives them, and how a missed check-in is detected. Do not treat an untested alert path as operational coverage.
- Data accounting: GlitchTip says hosted monitor requests count as subscription events. Check the current event accounting and limits that apply to your account.
- Telemetry needs: Compare which signals you need—framework exceptions, traces, metrics, logs, or scheduled-job check-ins—rather than assuming that support for one signal implies support for all.
- Deployment model: Establish whether you will use a hosted service or run the monitor yourself, then verify the relevant configuration and operational responsibilities.
GlitchTip log ingestion has a specific caveat
If you plan to send OpenTelemetry-format logs to GlitchTip, its documentation says the service does not expose a raw OTLP HTTP receiver; the SDK must wrap those records in a Sentry envelope. This limitation is documented for logs and should not be generalized to all OpenTelemetry signals. See GlitchTip’s log-ingestion documentation.

Use framework telemetry to investigate what happened inside requests and application code; use the import’s heartbeat to detect that the scheduled process failed to check in after successful completion. Neither signal replaces the other. Before depending on a 15-minute monitor, verify its interval, event accounting, and alert configuration for the deployment you intend to use.
